2 more nuclear plants to be re-examined

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says that it will order assessments of underground cracks at 2 additional nuclear power plants.

The agency decided at a meeting on Friday to order surveys of the Monju and Mihama plants in Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast.

The agency said it cannot rule out the possibility that cracks beneath the plants will shift simultaneously with known active faults nearby.

The agency is reviewing the safety of nuclear power plants nationwide based on experts' advice that power companies should reassess underground fissures below their plants to determine whether they are active faults.

The assessments will include underground excavations in and around the plants' compounds.

The operators of the plants, Kansai Electric Power Company and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, had surveyed the sites before they applied for permission to build the plants.

The surveys showed that the underground rifts near the facilities would not shift.

Similar assessments have already begun at 4 facilities, including Ohi in Fukui Prefecture.
