Govt. to decide on forest decontamination The Japanese government will compile guidelines soon for decontaminating forests tainted by radioactive materials from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. An Environment Ministry panel of experts has been studying how to decontaminate the forests in Fukushima Prefecture. The panel had earlier planned to limit the clean-up effort to forests within 20 meters of community areas and campsites. But municipal authorities called for a wider decontamination zone. They say forests are integral to the lives of local people, providing water and other needs. Residents point out that forests make up about 70 percent of the prefecture. They say excluding most of this area from the decontamination project will hamper reconstruction efforts in the region. Officials of local governments and the forestry industry will have a chance to express their views at a panel meeting next Wednesday. The ministry says it will consider these views before compiling its plan for removing toxic materials. Aug. 24, 2012 source:
