Japan Eyes Storage Batteries to Promote Green Power Generation

Tokyo, Aug. 27 (Jiji Press)--Japan's industry ministry is set to promote the introduction of large storage batteries at power substations to back up electricity generation from renewable energy sources, officials have said.

The ministry will request some 10 billion yen under the government's fiscal 2013 budget, mainly as subsidies for battery makers' tests aimed at improving the performance and lowering costs of their products, the officials said.

In July, Japan introduced a feed-in tariff system under which power companies are obliged to buy all electricity generated from renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, at fixed prices.

Capitalizing on the program, many companies have launched projects to build so-called mega solar plants.

But power output from solar facilities tends to be volatile because it depends on the weather conditions, making it difficult to stabilize the output levels.

Large storage batteries, such as sodium-sulfur batteries, at power substations help solve the problem by adjusting electricity discharge and storage depending on swings in power output at plants using renewable energy, the officials said.
