Shizuoka Governor Backs Referendum on N-Plant Shizuoka, Aug. 27 (Jiji Press)--Shizuoka Governor Heita Kawakatsu on Monday supported a proposal to hold a referendum on whether to restart the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in the central Japan prefecture. Kawakatsu accepted a petition a local citizen's group submitted to have the prefectural assembly pass an ordinance to hold the referendum. The petition was filed along with the signatures of 165,127 local residents, far more than the 61,541 legally required, or 2 pct of all voters in the prefecture, for filing such petitions. "I will respect (the petition) as much as possible," Kawakatsu said at a regular press conference. "We will look primarily at the option of drawing up an ordinance for the referendum," he said. "The governor took our petition seriously and we now hope the (prefectural) assembly will approve (the ordinance)," Nozomu Suzuki, the group's head, told reporters. source:
