R&D for Direct Disposal of Spent N-Fuel Eyed in Budget Requests Tokyo, Aug. 28 (Jiji Press)--Japan's science ministry is considering including funds for the research and development for the direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel in its budget request for fiscal 2013, officials said Tuesday. The ministry's plan for the first such budget request was unveiled at a meeting of the Atomic Energy Commission. The commission has said that Japan should quickly start developing technologies that will enable the direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The science ministry will coordinate with the industry ministry, which also plans to request funds for developing such technologies for the year from April. As for budgets for the "Monju" fast-breeder test reactor run by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the science ministry only said at the meeting that it will take account of a review of the government's energy policy. source:
