Softbank, Mitsui to develop solar power plant

Japanese mobile phone carrier Softbank and trading house Mitsui & Company will jointly build a large-scale solar power plant in Tottori Prefecture, western Japan.

The companies signed an agreement in Tokyo on Wednesday to operate a joint venture that has been set up by Mitsui and a subsidiary of Softbank.

The power plant, scheduled to be built on about 53 hectares of leased land in Yonago City, will have an annual power-generating capacity of 39.5 million kilowatt hours.

That's enough to supply power to about 11,000 households.

Softbank and Mitsui hope to complete construction of the plant next July.

They say they will discuss further cooperation in the solar power industry, as demand is expected to grow.

Softbank president Masayoshi Son said as many entities as possible should be involved in developing renewable energy, and the Softbank group is ready to do its part.
