New system to prevent hydrogen explosion in reactor containment Aug. 31, 2012 TOKYO --A research team of Hokkaido University will work on development of a system for preventing hydrogen explosions in reactor containments even when power supplies are lost. Plant power supplies were lost by a tsunami in the Fukushima I nuclear power station accident, leading to hydrogen explosions in reactor containments. If this new system becomes commercially practical, it will be a revolutionary system to prevent hydrogen explosions even in such an accident. This system uses magnesium, which tends to combine with hydrogen. High-performance magnesium, which can absorb a large amount of hydrogen quickly, is produced by processing magnesium under pressure and adding a catalyst. It is possible to prevent hydrogen explosions by adequately deploying high-performance magnesium in containments and reactor buildings. The Hokkaido University team will create 1:1000 and 1:200 scale models of reactor buildings to investigate how hydrogen actually flows by convection. Through this investigation, it will study optimum deployment locations and amounts of high-performance magnesium. source:
