Japan May Not Vote on Nuclear Panel Appointments Soon Tokyo, Aug. 30 (Jiji Press)--Japan's parliament may not vote on appointments to a planned new nuclear regulatory commission before its current session ends Sept. 8. A vote is unlikely during the current parliamentary session, a senior parliamentary affairs official at the ruling Democratic Party of Japan said Thursday. This is because some DPJ members, including former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, oppose appointing Shunichi Tanaka, former acting chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, as head of the new regulatory body, describing him as a pro-nuclear expert. There is concern within the DPJ that forcing a vote may cause more lawmakers to quit the party, people familiar with the situation said. Another DPJ executive said a vote is difficult because opposition parties have been boycotting parliamentary debates since the opposition-controlled House of Councillors passed a censure motion against Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda Wednesday. source:
