RAW Footage: Volcano Gives Birth to New Island in Japan BY MIKE SCHULER ON NOVEMBER 21, 2013 Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YZY6kH_RXSU Japan’s territory got a little bit bigger Wednesday after an eruption of an undersea volcano led to the birth of a small new island. Pictures and video of the eruption show the new island form as smoke pours from an undersea volcano off the coast of Nishinoshima, a small uninhabited island in Tokyo’s southern Ogasawara chain of islands. The new, oval-shaped land mass measures about 200 meters long at its greatest point. The eruption prompted the Japanese Coast Guard to issue a warning to ships around the area, as billowing smoke pours into the atmosphere and the threat of another eruption is still present. ![]() Image credit: REUTERS/Kyodo ![]() Image credit: REUTERS/Kyodo ![]() Image credit: REUTERS/Kyodo ![]() Image credit: REUTERS/Kyodo Source:
