Hi, all.

Brand new Necron player here. I'm not entirely new to 40k as I played Space Wolves back in 2nd edition; but now I'm back and under the Necron banner. Anyway... I'm trying to decide what I need to start out with a useful and flexible fighting force. I've messed around with an army list, but I realize that I know very little about how the game plays nowadays and even less about how the Necrons are best played.

Please take a moment and tell me not only how bad this list is, but why... and how to fix it. Thanks in advance! :)

Due to the rule changes in 7th edition, CCBs are best used with a fully-kitted out Overlord. After all, he gives himself AND the barge a 3+ invuerable save, AND it can come back using Ever-Living.
I'd reccomend the following Overlord setup

I'd also reccomend taking all three upgrades for the Despairtek. The one that forces a LD test isn't very reliable, but you can target a differant squad than what your squad is shooting at, and when it DOES work, it often works well. My best experience with it is using the Veil to teleport over to my opponants deployment zone on turn 1, and then forcing his Space Marine command squad (with HQ choice) to flee off the table.

I personally don't use Lychguard, but they can be good in the right circumstances.

I'd reccomend against Tomb Spyders without some scarabs, as there need to already be some scarabs before they can make more. The Gloom Prism is also so short-ranged and ineffective as to be a waste of points. Maybe swap them out for an Annihilation Barge?

Otherwise, a pretty solid list. Lots of shooting going on there. =)

First off, please do not post point values as it can get us in trouble with GW and no one wants that. Having high level numbers (like total for all troops) and such is ok but not on a per model basis please.

As for the list a few things stand out to me.

1. 20 Warriors cannot fit into a ghost ark and you cannot place partial units into transports as Necrons don't have a way to Combat Squad like marines. Walking them on foot is fine (especially with ghost arks to repopulate the ranks); however, they are more vulnerable. Likewise, should you get into close combat, that's a lot more troops being swept. I would propose breaking it out into 4 units of 10. Loading 2 units into ghost arks and keeping 2 on the ground. This will increase the number of Objective Secured troop options you have for holding objectives, allows you to split your fire to 2 additional targets if you choose, and gives your opponent additional threats.

2. I see what you're doing with the spyders. It's not bad. It's unique as it's more common to see Annihilation barges in the heavy support slot and thus have limited room for multiple units of spyders but what you're doing isn't bad (and still works with the above).

3. I'm not sold on Lychguard, especially on foot. However, I know that some Necron players do very well with them and that I haven't played them in the 2 weeks 7th edition has been out. Once I do, I'll update my tactica. Back on topic though, make sure to have the Chrono-tek with them so that you have the ability to reroll their 5+ RP. As you tweak the list, you may want to evaluate the unit to see if it's truly worth the 200+ pts you're paying for it or if something else would be better (I'd recommend Nemesor Zahndrekh).

Beyond that, I would say it's a solid start for a newer Necron player. I agree with Secundum on the Command Barge setup.
