Anyone have any experience with destroyers in the new edition? I really liked them in the last edition but haven't played with them in the new one yet. Thanks! |

I've played them in a few games using both squads of just normal destroyers and squads with just heavies. I haven't seen much change in them. Scoring is nice since they are jump infantry but their effectiveness is still really good given PE(Everything) and a good BS. The fact they can be in a bastion works out well other than the limited angles fire points have. |

good on an ADL and then zoom out like secundum said for last minute scorers. Normal destroyers slap MEQs around and heavys are still long range death cannons and very useful for destroying vehicles even more so now. Pretty much minor "buff" |

Normal Destroyers can kill most MCs too. S5, preffered enemy, and AP3. Plus 10 shots from a full squad. |

Does the ADL cover 25% of the destroyers? they hover quite high.... Another thing we have to consider about destroyers/heavy destroyers is that they can deepstrike. If you have for example a unit of 2 heavy destroyers, you might kamikaze-deepstrike it behind an enemy vehicle to get a shot on the rear armor (usually 10)...this should usually be 2 pens. Normal destroyers you might deepstrike behind enemy units to snipe protected special weapons (or warlords) |

its been there since i've started playing back in 6th. its in the jump unit rules. ive deep striked my wraiths once or twice.. |

Yea Jump Infantry and Jet Pack Infantry can all Deep Strike implicitly through their unit time. It was introduced in 6th and remains in 7th. I used deep strike to bring in normal destroyers once and it worked out decently; however, it's a lot of points with quality firepower being held in reserve. I tend to get more use out of them via keeping them deployed. |

Another thing I did also mention in the old forum...destroyer wing may be viable in combination with a ghost ark. Ghost ark should block totally LOS to the destroyers...so if the GHost ark is in front of the destroyers, the opponent wont be able to shoot at em (GA is laaarge) Now: Move them together in a unit. 5 destroyers move 12 inches in one direction, ghost ark moves 6 inches in the same direction. Destroyers shoot. Then GA flats out 6'' and blocks LOS to the destroyers again. Repeat every turn. GA is quite hard to kill, if vehicles come to close, Gauss-rapidfire-spam. A unit of 5 normal destroyers+5 warriors in GA would cost you like 380 points. Seems ok for what it can do and for the fact that it includes one troop selection (which we have to fill if we wanna go battleforged). |

This is even more interesting now that area terrain is gone, the destroyers lost a possibility of gaining a cover save without losing LOS deep striking destroyers/heavies: I would try to have something to influence reserve arrival (Zanhdrekh, Orikan, warlod trait) because otherwise, yeah, a lot of much-needed firepower could stick in reserve |

@OLJ destroyers manning the quad gun on the ADL not just sitting behind the ADL for the cover save. ADL still gives a save to non-vehicle models if they are in base contact with it. |

I played a 1500 pts game using 4 destroyers. Deep striking does work if you can wipe out the target unit. I lost the destroyers to close combat terminators. small unit of destroyers deep striking works, but it is pretty much a throw-away unit afterwards unless it survives. IMO. a 5 man squad is too expensive and points better spent on other units. I know that 10 man destroyer squad would be pointless against non meq armies. In my experience most non-meq armies play with at least one monsterous creature. @magister Thanks for that correction. My mistake about destroyer unit size. Good thing max unit size is 5 then! Still temains a expensive unit. But can on occassion be worth it. I do like the ghostarc tactic and it increases survival chances |
