I'm thinking of getting discussions going on units in the army list in the context of the latest edition of the rules. This will be a series with a focus on a single unit at a time for a decent amount of time before we flood the tactica with the next tactica. Threads will go on as long as they have to! So with that out of the way... Triarch Stalkers Penetrates are less likely to kill off the vehicle and they are also not that likely to suffer a destroyed weapon result (same chance as last time). Thanks to AV13 we can saturate the table with another high armour choice. So what do people think? What anecdotes are flying around out there? Rap with me. |

Another question; what units should we prioritise assistance from the Triarch Stalker? Again this is dependent on circumstance and the like but what do people like to do? Larger Warriors squads seems a given. Immortals getting as many S5 hits on the target is always fun. Warriors in Ghost Arks again do well to take those rerolls. But what targets they are hitting do we like? I'm inclined to say maximise hits against infantry but then again I would like to kill that Land Raider or Leman Russ squadron. Actually Leman Russ and other squadrons are very good targets. |

For me, the primary targets for my stalker and force is anything that is the largest threat. Sounds very generic but I tend to focus more on the larger threats than a single infantry unit. Shooting a CSM Spawn unit or some blood criushers may not outright kill one but the additional volley from being marked can bring them down. Same with vehicles and MCs. Infantry units can be threatening but I have seen more benefits from focusing on the bigger items. |

Fast units can be a danger. like beasts. Stuff that can penatrate armour is high on the list. Other then that. Shoot that which can hurt you the most in the oponents turn. The lack of cc would be nothing if stalkers got skyfire/intercept It is one of the few things I would like in a new codex. |

I have found that the Stalker best fulfills one of two roles: Offensive Flank and Heavy Firepower. It achieves both of these roles when combo'd with another unit. Offensive Flank: Composition: 1 Stalker w/ Heat Ray, 3x Tomb Blades w/ Particle Beamers, Shadowlooms/Shield Vanes: 270pts I was looking at how to incorporate Tomb Blades w/ Particle Casters, and found that they have fantastic potential when paired with the Triarch Stalker's TL ability. 3x S6 TL Blasts, after 2x Melta/1x Heavy Flamer hits? Ouch. Alternate Composition: 1 Stalker w/ Heat Ray, 6 Canoptek Wraiths w/ 3 Transdimensional Beamers, 3 Whip Coils: 450 points :wraith: A combat setup is possible when combined with Wraiths. The above setup is an extreme example, but the beauty of Wraiths is they are so versatile! Wraiths operate very nicely on their own, but the their ranged weaponry, specifically Transdimensional Beamers, benefit greatly from the TL ability. Oh, and if you encounter high AV? 2 Melta Shots should do the trick! The wraiths also nicely counter any walkers or monstrous creatures that threaten the Stalker with combat. Heavy Firepower: Composition: 1 Stalker w/ Heat Ray, 3 Heavy Destroyers: 270pts Really nice and fairly cheap (for what it is) anti-MC/high AV fire base. Heavy Destroyers wound the vast majority of MCs on 2s, and combined with Preferred Enemy almost never fail. Combined with the TL ability, they almost never miss, either! Your opponent then has to decide between which unit they fire upon, as both are a pretty significant threat on their own... Bear in mind, these are the combos I've actually tried out and have had some success with. Hope this helps with some inspiration! :) |

I loved building my Stalker, easily one of my favorite models, except that the height of the model and the position of the gun makes it harder to get cover that doesn't block your shot. I still love it. In game though, my stalker has never been better than "ok". It was generally a big target, and without jink or reliable cover it always died really quick. When it didn't die quick, it's own offensive capability had mixed results. For one thing, it's darned easy for the opponents vehicles to stay more than half range away from the heat ray. And if you don't get the melta effect it's so much less likely to pen, so who cares about AP1? I've used the shredder to good effect on boy mobz. but on almost infantry targets it just can't make back points and the twin-linking is often unneccesary. As for the shredder on vehicles, the anni barge is hands down better if I wanna put str 7 against a vehicle target. The HGC is nice for the long range, but I can play 3 heavy destroyers, for 3 shots, almost as likely to hit as a single twinlinked, and easier to keep alive. The synergy with granting twin-linked has come in handy a few times, but if that's really the only reason to use it, in light of mediocre survivability and close combat, 150 pts is just too much. TL;DR - Love the model, but it's only "ok" in game. |

It has to be said again that the stalker really isnt a unit that "makes back its points" alone. It is a supportive unit, and I use it as such. I use the heatray on orkboys..who cares? Yes it might only kill 1 or 2 of em, but the following Gauss-storm from several Ghost arks with embarked warriors does usually whipe out whats left. For me it makes a big difference hiting 2/3 (66%) of your shots or 8/9 (88%). While it is true that the heatray lacks range to really "hunt" vehicles, it adds a safety bubble. If that landraider wants to disembark a big unit of terminators within my rows, it HAS to get that close...and then the melta is waiting for it. Does that mean the stalker usually destroys the landraider? No. Usually the opponent decides to not take the risk. Thus, it does limit the opponents tactics, which is a VERY important thing. (maybe more important than killing stuff!) I usually have the stalkers about in the "middle zone" of my army. They are great at punishing deepstrikers because of the flamer option. However, it really depends on your army list if using the stalker is great. For example: IF you use zahndreks tankhunters, the melta might work well against AV12 or less even on 24''. Also zahndrekhs tankhunter makes "mark it, then glance it to death" very viable with the stalker. Big pie plates also combine greatly with the stalker. If, however, you have a very stabby armylist and just need some ap2, then the stalker is not the right option. Also if you have a lot of TL anyways the stalker is not worth it. |
