Competitive Necron Tactica; Necron tip and tricks

Greetings,

I've played 40k since the dawn of 2nd edition, jumped from various armies as the general interest grows and wanes. At the start of 6th edition I decided to delve into Necrons, I also decided to take a competitive punt at running much harder armies than I normally do (I generally play themed or "fun" build armies). My local environment very much leans towards competitive slaughter fests, so it does get old getting consistently tabled by Turn 2...so after a long foray into WFB, I've moved back to 40k at the start of 7th edition.

I plan on using the thread to consolidate and build a "competitive" pool of ideas and tactics for Necron players to loot, steal and pillage.

All in good fun :monolith:
List of Necron Tools, Tricks and Tips:

To be updated.

I'm going to use this post to consolidate the ideas in the thread as they get posted.

There seems to be 4 main lines of thinking when it comes to high-end tournament tactics for Necrons.

Wraith-wing:
This list consists of 2 decked out Destroyer Lords leading 3 units of Wraiths (6 models, 3 coils, 1 D.Lord in each of 2 units). The D. Lords tank hits for the Wraiths while LOS'ing anything AP2. Rounding out the list is 3 Annihilation barges and 4 squads of minimum warriors in Night Scythes for a last turn objective grab/contest. This worked great at the end of 5th and midway into 6th (until Tau dominated with anti-air).

Flying Bakery:
This list is focused on getting as many Night Scythes onto the field as possible. Not the most effective even at the time; however, with so many flyers pumping out S7 shows it can do a lot of damage. In many instances, troops were deployed on the ground to make sure you don't get tabled turn 1. The other main weakness that this list encounter are Deamon Factory lists preventing the flyers from finding a place to land within its range.

AV13 Spam:
The concept is pretty simple - load the list up with Annihilation Barges and Ghost Arks. There's plenty of variants in terms of adding Triarch Stalkers, Command Barges, and Monoliths but the premise is simply give them more high armor than they know what to do with. This type of list tends to turtle up to protect the rear facing and turbo boosting midgame to get the necessary objectives for the missions.

Allies:
I've seen some mixed philosophies amongst tournament players on this with Necrons. Looking at the BAO and Connecticon tournament lists here in the US, a number of Necron players have been using the Tau Fire Support Cadre formation as well as Legion of the Damned formations in order to add extra Melta and large Strength/low AP shows that Necrons need to truly address the rise of Knights.

How about the dual court despair-tek style? Is it considered competitive enough, or mostly niche?

Ie. AV13 to hold ground, while air-dropping in 2-3 squads of 5xdeathmark and 2xharbinger of despair (one from each court), to lay out 2+ templates on key targets. Warriors with double storm-teks as an additional option for more anti armor if points allow.

From looking at tournament lists posted from US (and sometimes the UK) tournaments, I can't recall the last time I've seen deathmarks in any list at a major tournament. The largest issue with them is reliable delivery and in most tournament lists, players will try and minimize as much randomness as possible. Alternatively, they play a numbers game to mitigate it (which is the case of Eldar Seer Council that uses a lot of psykers in order to get Fortune and now Invisibility).

Deathmarks can only mark a unit that is on the board when they, themselves, hit the board. So if Necrons deploy first, they can't mark anything as your opponent hasn't deployed anything yet. If deployed second, they are not able to mark infiltrators as those are deployed afterwards. Likewise, you can't mark a unit within a transport as said unit is not on the table. Lastly, there's ways to mitigate marking of an IC since you mark the IC or the unit it's joined to - which allows your opponent to split the unit to protect one or the other if they so desire.

In addition, Deathmarks are doubly effective when paired with a despair-tek for an AP1 template weapon. The bad part, the despair-tek prevents the Deathmarks from deep striking (veil is not the same as having the deep strike special rule) from Deep Strike Reserve - preventing them from using their (or Zhandrekh's) interceptor ability. This is all in addition to the added risk that is scattering. Though, due to the importance of getting within template and rapid fire range, deep striking is an even larger risk. This need for precision requires a Night Scythe....so an extra 100pts.

The other issue with Deathmarks is that - if they don't succeed in completely removing their target, they tend to get charged. And like every other non-canoptek unit, tends to lose combat.

Now, with all of the negative said - Deathmarks ARE a very effective dagger for your army if you have the points. The ability for it to quickly address a key unit is very important. Add in the fact that some new lists that are hitting the net are heavy on White Scars bikes, being able to say Hi with such firepower is can address such a threat. Same thing with Monstrous creatures.

In the end, it turns into a numbers game. A 5-man D&D squad in a night scythe is 225pts (cryptek included). This also requires you to take an Overlord and outfit him as you see fit (so a named Overlord or a custom build). So already, you are putting approximately 650pts for your HQ and 2 Elites. Add in your troops and you'll be somewhere around 1000pts - leaving you 500-850 to address armor, MSU, and other types of list that'll come up. For 225+ points you could get a unit of Wraiths with whip coils (240 for 6wraiths, 3 coils) which tends to be more resilient and more effective for a larger number of turns in the game.

I love my deathmarks and have played them with a moderate amount of success in local leagues and tournaments; however, I don't see myself taking them on a high-end level.
