Hey there, while reading throught the imperial armor 12 again, I noticed that maynarkh lychguard may actually be a viable elite choice. At first glance they dont seem much better than the normal lychguard...but once you get into maths you notice just how much damage they can do. - Rage gives them a wooping 4 attacks on charge - flensing scarabs enhances their performance on first round of CC (in my opinion the most important round of CC) - fear sometimes comes in handy - mark of the flayer helps a LOT if you stick a lord in there (do that) and prevents them from getting swept. Lets get into maths: lets say you have 5 charnel lychguard (warscythes) and they charge a unit. Now lets say you lose 2 of your lychguard before they are able to strike. You strike against a target with T5 or lower. Strikes of 3 lychguards: 12*1/2*35/36 = 5.83 wounds with AP1 in case the lychguards strike first (like against powerfist terminators) the opponent will have a really bad time. (wont happen often thought) The downsides: The biggest issue with them seems to be that they cant get an assault vehicle...which sucks, a lot. They can get a nightscythe, but cant charge after disembarking. Another thing thats a problem is how much their performance drops if they get charged. This may be mitigated by joining them one lord and one overlord, both with gauntlet of fire. Or one cryptek with lightning field & one overlord with gauntlet. They are quite fragile for their points, so I think a resOrb is a must-have. Also someone who tanks for them. They need transportation...you dont want to footslogg them! I think they might work well, but you do have to know how to use them, they seem to be more suitable for experienced players. They can do a lot of damage...but can also die quickly, so you have to babysit them all day long. What are your thoughts? |

How much are they cost wise vs normal lychguard? And you have already pointed out the downsides to them and if they have the warscythes they die off from high str low ap with no invul save and have to hope the squad doesn't get wiped out. One thought i just had with the lychguard is treat them just like a wraithwing but with one of two options (or combo them for larger pt games) toss in an overlord with phase shifter, semp weave and let him take the low ap shots and LOS the high ap ones (bleh do these guys have the same 3+ armor as normal lychguards? i forgot they had MEQ saves and not TEQ like they SHOULD) or toss in a harbinger of eternity with the chronometron and timesplinter cloak to soak shots with a once a phase rerollable 3++ (or do this with an overlord with sempweave and phase shifter and let him have a once a phase rerollable 2+/3++) or if some guard do go down you have a OAT rerollable RP save. Gotta find someway to protect the lychguard in a costly manner but its a huge problem because of all their downfalls. Hopefully this will be another tweak GW does for our codex at least let them be a chance to be picked for a viable melee unit instead of wraithwing |

they cost +(gauntlet of fire pointcost) over the normal lychguard. If you toss in flensing scarabs its an addition +(warscythe pointcost), but for the whole UNIT. Yeah, they have a lot of downsides...I kinda feel they would be a lot better if they had reliable synergy units or if they could MIX sword&shield with warscythe Lychguards (this would be SO good). Your ideas are similar to the ones I have. Cryptek with cronometrum and a blocking O-lord (with rerollabe invul)... The 4 attacks the toss out are just so tempting. I think they are real glascannon-units. They may do lots of damage, but they die quickly so keep them save. Imagine a 10 man unit (not really pointeffective) would toss out 40 warscythe attacks on charge...this is just insane. They could totally whipe out a unit of terminators in one round of CC. (and crack each and every vehicle, even superheavies) |
