Hello everyone, just starting with Necrons (and 40K in general), and preparing for my first game. I wargame casually with friends, mostly Oldhammer fantasy, Warmaster and Mordheim up until now, but my group is giving 40K a shot with the new edition starting next month. My foes will be playing Tyranids, Space Marines, and Chaos respectively, each of us doing 2000pts. This is the list I've put together, though honestly its mostly based around 1) what units I thought were "cool" and 2) what I've acquired cheaply secondhand supplemented by a start collecting box, as I have no practical experience with recent 40K. Looking for any feedback. VANGUARD DETACHMENT (HQ) Catacomb Command Barge (Warscythe/Tesla Cannon) - 162 pts (Troops) Necron Warriors x 20 - 120 pts (Elite) C'Tan - Shard of the Nightbringer- 230 pts (Elite) Deathmarks x 10 - 200 pts (Elite) Triarch Stalker (Twin Heavy Gauss Cannons) - 181 pts (Dedicated Transport) Ghost Ark - 170 pts TOTAL : 1183 pts OUTRIDER DETACHMENT (HQ) Cryptek - 104 pts (Fast Attack) Canoptek Scarabs x 6 - 78 pts (Fast Attack) Canoptek Wraiths x 5 (1 with Whip Coils) - 199 pts (Fast Attack) Destroyers x 5 (1 Heavy Destroyer) - 327 pts (Heavy Support) Canoptek Spyder (Gloom Prism, Fabricator Claw Array, Twin Particle Beamers) - 109 pts TOTAL : 817 pts GRAND TOTAL: 2000 pts The general plan is to march up the centre with the Warriors, protecting (and buffed by) the Cryptek, supported by the Ghost Ark and Command Barge, with Wraiths and Destroyers protecting the flanks. The Nightbringer and Scarabs used as distractions, supported by the Spyder. And the Triarch Stalker kept at a distance to provide long-range fire and provide re-rolls for priority targets. And the Deathmarks to jump in and deal with anything unexpected. Edited by TS Evans, Aug 2 2017, 04:32 AM.

I would say you don't have enough AT at 2000 points. You have 1 heavy destroyer and 2 more shots from the stalker and that is really it. What happens if you face a mech list or a landraider or two? I don't think Spyders are very good at the moment. I suspect they will make a comeback when we get our codex and one of the dynasties gives them and wraiths and scarabs special rules. Also reanimating scarabs aren't that scary for your opponent as they really are only useful for smite screening and objective grabbing on flanks. I would swap the night bringer for the deceiver (and save 5 points). He lets you teleport d3 units (and himself) before the start of the first turn and 12" away from the enemy. I would grab the deceiver and the wraiths and plop them on a flank to really mess with your opponents battle plans. Finally if you have more troops I would try and take a battalion for +3CP. You already have the 2 HQ units you only need to find room for 2 troops choices and I am 90% sure you will have enough slots for all the other units you are currently taking. Best of luck with your first game in 8th, it is good fun and Necrons are satisfying to play. |

I actually dont even know what a landraider is, lol. So what constitutes "AT"? Is it high Armour Penetration value? Besides Heavy Destroyers and Stalkers, which Necron unit is best for that? I could switch out the Ghost Ark for a Doomsday Ark, but outside of really pricey stuff like Monolith I'm not sure what else I could fit in. I'm surprised to hear Spyders arent very good. Aren't they our only means of countering psychic powers? Plus 2 assault 3 S6 shots guns and 4 S6 AP -2 attacks in melee each doing D3 damage...it seems like a bargain for a unit that also heals vehicles? |

A landraider is the Space Marine's iconic tank, you'll be seeing them a lot. ;) Your list isn't bad for casual games, nice variety. What models do you have other than what is in your list? Would you be open to buying some Forge World models? You definitely need more anti-tank at 2000p. As for psyker defence I would recommend a Tomb Sentinel, it can take a Gloom prism as well as having a heavy weapon and being a good deep striking distraction. Personally I would make some significant changes for an army better suited to the current meta. Drop the Ghost Ark, Deathmarks, Spyder and Wraiths and get another 10 Scarabs (for two squads of 8), a Doomsday Ark, 10 Immortals and a Sentry Pylon w/heat ray. If my maths are correct that is 2000 points. Doing so will give you the firepower you need to deal with the mech and monster heavy armies, which looking at your group, you'll be facing for sure. You can also then take is as a Battalion and gain more CP. Wraiths just aren't what they were - better to use Scarabs as meat shields and distractions as they're cheap Edited by Cyn, Aug 3 2017, 07:38 AM.

Pretty much what Cyn said above. Scarabs can screen your force (sit in front) and cop all the smites that might come your way. Don't bother trying to take psyker defence, just roll with it, we simply don't have the tools to deal with it so I would ignore it. A land raider is a 2+ 16 wound toughness 8 vehicle that will cause quite a bit of pain for your army. AT weapons are anything that does at least 3 damage in a shot, has decent strength (7+) and has at least -2AP. Our only real options are heavy destroyers, heavy gauss triarch stalkers, doomsday arks and from Forgeworld the Tesseract Ark and the Pylons. Personally I take the Tesseract Ark and the heavy destroyers. Sometimes I will field a Stalker as well but they aren't that great for the points you pay compared to the other options. I would argue you want at least 2 solid AT units at 2000 points. One of the Arks and probably a unit of 3 heavy destroyers would be solid and cover most threats. I forgot to mention in my original post that Deathmarks are definitely not great for their points. 201 points gets you 2x destroyers and 1x heavy destroyer in one unit. In my opinion that is far better than 10 Deathmarks that spit out mostly AP nothing wounds unless you get lucky on the 6+ rolls. |
