I thought everyone was going to not be bringing anything with D6 wounds because my Quantum Shielding rolls had been on fire so I wanted a list without Quantum Shielding to mess with the 5 other guys. We played with a light version of highlander, so no more than 2 dublicates of any non-Troops choice. I was probably the one who spammed choices the most except maybe an Emperor's Children played with 6 units of 5 Noise Marines. I was mostly planning on losing and drinking a lot, nobody wanted to drink with me though, I guess that was their loss. Battalion + Outrider + Superheavy Destroyer Lord (Warscythe) Overlord (Warscythe) Overlord (Warscythe) 10 Immortals (tesla carbines) 10 Immortals (tesla carbines) 5 Immortals (gauss blasters) 1 Destroyer 3 Canoptek Wraiths 3 Canoptek Wraiths 3 Heavy Destroyers 3 Heavy Destroyers 1 Gauss Pylon The first game was against Tzeentch Daemons and Thousand Sons (pre-codex). The mission was a mixture of kill points and the mission where you generate missions when you control objectives. His army was a lot better suited for close range so I had to stay back and didn't get any objectives as a result. I got 33% of the VPs during our game which was the metric that counted. Wraiths were pretty useless against his army and died really easily. There was nothing big left for the Pylon to shoot by turn 4 so it was basically dead weight, it did cause 16 out of Magnus' 18 wounds on the first turn while the rest of my army did 2 wounds to Magnus and nothing else. The second game was against a Space Wolves list with two flyers with Wulfen, some Jump Pack guys and a small Thunderwolf Cavalry unit. He got first turn and immediately grabbed the relic (which was the mission we played). I dropped the Pylon in to draw away his Wulfen from the main part of my army, it worked and I pretty much only lost my Pylon and a unit or two of Immortals. The only surviving model he had was the character that grabbed the Relic. I got 42% of the VPs this game. The third game was against Emperor's Children sonic marine spam with 3 vehicles and a small Terminator unit with a Sorcerer for alpha striking. I got first turn and popped his fancy Dreadnought (350+ pts) with my Pylon turn 1, popped another vehicle with the Destroyers turn 1 and finished his last vehicle with my Pylon turn 2. Slowly cleaned up the rest of his army with the exception of a single Sonic Marine that managed to hide. Got around 75% of the VPs for this game. Now, as my average % of VPs being below 50% you would never expect me to be the second best among 6. But I was. Because the player who got the most absolutely wrecked his opponents by 90%, 90% and 75% of the VPs in his games. This meant that the players who played his basically had no chance of getting in the final. The last other player was the one I just defeated and he needed to get 4% more of the VPs in our game to get in the final. So what kind of brutal list could slaughter 3 armies so handidly? A Brigade IG list with some Scions and a couple of Mechanicus walkers... Yeah. Because he played Brigade I got first turn and my Pylon started its rampage by destroying a flyer with some special weapons inside, each turn after that it destroyed another vehicle. My opponent surrendered after he had lost 60+% of his army and I had lost a single unit of Heavy Destroyers. I don't really think I can do anything about the relic mission, Deep Striking in and taking it with a character turn 1 is just too easy for some armies. In general, though I had too much anti-vehicle firepower and not enough short range firepower and the gimmick with not taking any Quantum Shielding flopped spectacularly since every opponent I played had models that caused D6 wounds. I also lacked a better screen for taking charges instead of suffering multiple charges with my Immortals. I was the only person who brought a super-heavy but Magnus is only 50 pts less expensive so I'm not sure how much of a cheesemonger I've been. Hopefully, it was weighed up by me being the only person who wasn't playing sober. I played another game against CSM. He held 2 units of Terminators in reserve until turn 2 and Abaddon until turn 3. He lost. Revised list: Battalion + Superheavy Catacomb Command Barge (gauss cannon + staff of light) Illuminor Szeras 10 Immortals (tesla carbines) 10 Immortals (tesla carbines) 19 Warriors 3 Canoptek Wraiths 3 Canoptek Wraiths 1 Doomsday Ark 1 Doomsday Ark 1 Pylon Beat a Ynnari list, it was his first time with Ynnari and he didn't optimize the placement of his units to ensure they granted a unit strength from death. My army did feel a lot stronger though. Doomsday Arks are just so much more survivable against D6 wounds that it isn't even funny. I'm not sure about Illuminor Szeras, he seems fairly expensive for what he does. |

Nice lists. I think all of our named characters are a bit too expensive for what they do. The nature of Necron character buffs means you often want to take a minimum character buff unit (Cryptek 104 points or an overlord with sword for 104). They aren't going to be getting into combat (hopefully) so you really want the buff on the cheapest character possible. |

If you just want the buff then the character is largely pointless. Taking an overlord for MWBD will never get you as many hits as simply taking the Overlord's point cost and spending it on more troops. Similarly, getting 5 extra warriors could get you more durability than taking a cryptek this one is more situation dependent). Lords should only be taken to fill in HQ slots as their buff is not that great. Regardless, if you have no plan for your HQ other than to have them buff your troops you need to rethink what HQ your taking and what role you're using them in. |

Well in a battalion you need to take 2 HQ slots no matter what. The lord is about 30 points cheaper but I think both the 5++ and +1 reanimation, and the +1 to hit, charge and advance are well worth 30 odd points to fill those HQ slots. You are never taking them just for the buff but the buff is all that they are really good for (and meeting that detachment requirement). |

Illuminor Szeras is a overcosted I agree, but you don't really need the 5+ invul against ranged as badly when you have a Pylon. If we take the base cost for a Cryptek you get what is more or less a las cannon add the cost of a combi-bolter because he isn't losing a bolter for it and then you are paying 35 pts for downgrading your ability. I'd only be able to fit in a single extra Warrior in this particular list if I was going to shift Szeras for another character. I suppose I could bring two cheap Catacomb Command Barges but their MWB would quickly become less useful with so few units to buff. The regular Lord seems like an absolute waste of points IMO, but I agree with the general sentiment of our HQ not being entirely worth thier points but I don't think there is any army that would bring more HQs than required for the formations they are bringing. I do think the third HQ in my first list was worth the extra command point though, what do you guys think about that? While the Tesla squads are at full size he is delivering firepower equivalent of half a unit in addition to being worth about 3 Lychguard in CC. Of course without the Overlord you probably wouldn't be bringing tesla in the first place. |

Extra command points are interesting. I always do up two lists when I am undecided on that extra point, make a list where you pay that extra HQ tax and one without it. Compare the two and ask yourself if the stuff you have to drop for that extra CP is worth it. I usually find the answer is no but I do feel like Necrons with the quantum shielding rolls do make good use out of 1 extra CP compared to most factions. |
