Hey everyone,

I haven't posted anything in a while, basically life happend (had a daughter and didn't really get to play 40k much). I recently got my hands on a 3D printer and decided to try and model a sentry pylon. I don't think it's against forum rules and copyright infrigment because it's not really a replica of the existing model, which I don't even own, but for now I'll only post a picture. If you think it's fine I can also link to the 3D model.

Credits to a certain C. Humpherys for the canon (think it's a death ray), base and legs. I basically did the arms, their support and the arm tips.

I'm having a bit of trouble printing the legs but that's only because of their small base area. Fiddling with the raft size should do the trick (printing as of this writing).

Yeah it is pretty similar... probably too much for it to be okay for me to share it.

Oh well, thanks.

Well, I want pics of the finished product regardless (if it's not too much trouble).

And you don't have to post it here. Just put it on thingiverse or tinkercad and tell us when it's up (if that's ok with mods).

I can't say I'm familiar with this type of legal stuff, but I do know GW is pretty protective of their Intellectual Property.
They've gone after a site that hosted 3D models before (idk how that turned out though).

That said, I can't imagine it being a problem if you provide pictures of the result.
As long as you don't sell or distribute, it should be fine.

Yeah I've done some research since I posted this and it's pretty much unambiguous: sharing the 3D model is a big no. I'll stick with the pictures, although it's going to take a few days because my print volume is small (120x120x120 mm). I've already printed one but it was way too small, I had to scale it up by a factor of 1.73 to make it the same size as the original (I tried to take approximate measurements from online pictures but obviously didn't do it very well).

I don't paint my models but I might make an exception for this one :)

Next I think I'll use the spare DDA canons I got from my GA to make custom stalkers. I'll make them different from the original to make it shareable.

Here's the final print, with no additional cleanup/sanding/putty. I think it looks pretty good, and the print layers may be small enough to be easy to remove with a bit of filling primer and sanding. I didn't use the smallest layer size for the legs and the canon itself to save some time but I might redo them if I do decide to paint it. Or I can simply print another, takes a few days but it costs less than 5$ so...

I did work on a few other models recently, including a Triarch Stalker (which was made to be different from the original, and frankly looks horrible right now (my model, not the original)) and a heavy destroyer. The heavy destroyer may be a bit detail heavy though, I'm not convinced it's gonna come out fine. Still, it's a lot of fun and excellent 3D modeling practice.

Before the 8th edition I had also started working on (erm, planning) a flayed one conversion based on Tsutomu Nihei's Blame!'s safeguards. I thought the FO were also going to be awesome in 8th considering the apparent focus on melee, but pretty much left it aside after reading that they weren't. Still, I'd love to model and paint some units based on this theme. I might start with an Overlord / high level safeguard and see how well it looks. I could also use the 3D printing/modeling to support conversions instead of doing the whole thing and loosing a bunch of details.

Anyways, let me know what you think and if you've already tried something similar or were planning to.

Edit: Nah, a high level safeguard should be a C'Tan shard conversion, not an overlord! Damn that'd be awesome!

Will do! I printed the HD at 0.0875 mm height with a 0.4 mm nozzle and apart from the necron symbols, it came out surprizingly well! With a smaller nozzle (I'll try a 0.25 mm or a 0.15 mm), I don't even think you'd see the layers of a good print once it's painted. It does take a while, so it's definitely not worth it for warriors for example, but for bigger stuff? Absolutely.

Anyways, nothing new at the moment. Will get back with some progress once I manage to settle down (lots going on right now).

Quick update. I use a parametric modeling software which definitely isn't optimal (i.e. easy) for non-vehicule models... still, the "kinda" destroyer is starting to look good and the print tests are amazing.

The Triarch Stalker still looks like sh** so I won't show it yet :)
I made new legs for the sentry pylon, the previous ones were far from impressive and were extremely flimsy. These are much stronger.

Here are the "kinda destroyers" in the process of being painted. They're the first models I've painted in ~15 years so there's room for improvement, but I'm quite happy with how they're turning out even if they look like lobsters! Plus it's nice to know that the paint on the models is more expensive than the models themselves...

I used cryptek arms for the 2 on the back, and some nid arm for the one in the front (because why not!).

Thats some pretty cool stuff... Have you considered printing some necron terrain (If you already have, sorry, probably missed it... <.<)

Just seems like a pretty decent option for it. Especially if youve got a cheap filament source. :)

I did print a few terrain items but my print volume is quite limited (120x120x120), so nothing particularly useful. Mostly aesthetic stuff, but it hasn't been painted yet and I used VERY pink filament so I won't share pictures :p

But yeah it's extremely fun, I've printed two sentry pylons, two tesseract arks, three triarch stalkers (again, because why the heck not?), a bunch of scarab bases, a tomb blade proxy, a canoptek sentinel, and these three destroyer proxys. My oppenents have no idea what I'll field, and honestly the destroyers are the worst looking ones (apart from the tomb blade) because I modeled it myself. I was hoping the new codex would give me an excuse to print monoliths, but that's not gonna happen...

BTW I received some nice advices about the paint technique for the destroyers, I'll try something else and report. I'll use a browner base and a less-orangy highlight, plus a few more metallic parts here and there. I have a good feeling about it!
