Hi all, I'm planning my first 8th ed game in about two weeks time and wanted to try going with vehicules and scarabs (last games were mostly infantry and jetbikes). Here's what I had in mind: Spearhead detachment - 1 CP 1x CCB (staff of light, gauss cannon) 1x CCB (staff of light, gauss cannon) 3x scarabs 3x scarabs 1x Sentry Pylon (tele matrix) 1x DDA 1x DDA If Battlescribe's not mistaken, it comes to 996 pts. Think it may be fun? Comments and suggestions are more than welcome, but I'd really like to try my new Sentry Pylon! My main concern is that if he chooses to field infantry, which is usually doesn't, I may feel that I'm lacking tesla weapons. Should I switch the CCB's gauss cannons for tesla or should I drop one of 'em for something else? Thanks! |

Will it be fun? Sure will. You will pretty much auto lose any objective based game however. You have a total of 11 models and none of them are objective secured. Expect to be in a world of pain against troops in objective missions. Why pay the extra points for 2 command barges? You should drop one down to an annihilation barge at least and invest in some more scarabs maybe. I think you have enough anti tank from the 2 doomsday arks and the pylon at 1000 points so I would look at going heavy on the tesla for the barges as you need a way to clear mass infantry. |

Haven't fully read the 8th edition rules yet but I also thought objective secured didn't exist anymore. I do lack anti troop, I'll do as you suggested, I.e. drop a CCB, add an annihilation barge, switch the other CCB to tesla, and add scarabs. Unfortunately I can't split the 9 scarabs into three units unless battlescribe is mistaken, but it's still better than the initial list. I didn't really mention it but my opponent cannot field anything remotely resembling a horde, he doesn't have the models. In 7th he'd dark Lance me from his gunboats, and field jetbikes, venoms (in case I had a c'tan), flyers and a harlequin or two. Still, more tesla is required at the very least for his jetbikes and perhaps the harlequin who will probably chew on my CCB. So it looks like this now: Spearhead: 1x CCB (tesla, staff) 5x scarabs 4x scarabs 1x Sentry Pylon (tele matrix) 1x DDA 1x DDA 1x AB (tesla) |

Only the space marines (so far) have the equivalent of objective secured this edition, when using a battle-forged army through the "Defender of Humanity" special rule. Otherwise, you just need more models within range of the objective than your opponent has. For objectives not in or near your deployment zone, you will likely use your scarab units, so you would be limited to to 4 or 5 models if that objective gets contested. A situational drawback at 1000 point games |

Games workshop has released a sneak peek for their 'update' if you will, to matched play rules and everyones troops are going to be getting ob-sec. ITC and lots of other tournaments have already layered this into their structure. So if you're just playing a friendly game then no, nothing has ob sec except for marines, but if you go to a tournament its very likely that all troops have ob sec will be in effect. Regardless low model count armies struggle with objectives no matter what rules are being played. |

Looks like a solid list and fun list. Remember to give the warlord the trait that gives an extra attack. Are you playing on a 4' x 4' table since it's 1000 points? |

Great thanks, I'll let you know how it turn out. I took note about the warlord trait. Yes for 1000 pts 4x4 is what we usually use. |

Scarabs are min of 3 per unit so I don't see why you can't split them down? On battlescribe you need to add another force to the list if you want to add 2 detachments. You should play the objective secured for all troops rule as it should be in an official FAQ soon from GW (they released test rules for tournament play that has it in already). If you don't then more bodies = better chance of securing the objective so my original point still stands. If you are facing Dark Eldar you need to be super careful with those DDA. If you move not only are you hitting most of his stuff on 5s (-1 for heavy and -1 for his shadow field things) so your low shots on the DDA arks can hurt if you have to move. You can alleviate this issue by being super careful with your deployments so as not to be out of range or out of LOS of his vehicles. Consider that when deploying. Noted, thanks. I'll find it for curiosity since I play friendly games only, kids and work preventing me from attending tournaments! I'm curious what will happen if two obj sec troop both reach an objective: do they negate each other like in previous editions or, aligned with 8th edition initial rules, does the one with the most obj sec models near the objective wins out? |

For the scarabs I'm limited to 2 fast attack units in a spearhead detachment so I'd need to add an Auxiliary support detachement to split the scarabs into 3 units of 3, which drops my CP to 0. I guess it doesn't really matter considering my army composition, having 3 units of 3 scarabs is probably a better advantage. I'll be careful about the DDA, thanks for the advice. I'll definitely make several mistakes (I play once or twice a year, haven't played 8th yet) but I'll look out for this one. |

It would drop you down to 3 since you get 3 for being battleforged and 1 for the spearhead. I wouldn't do it though. Just keep two units. |

It's the latter. "If an enemy unit within range of the objective marker have a similar ability, then it is controlled by the player who has the most models within range as normal." |
