Let's discuss the actual genre of Emo, not what the popular perception of Emo is, which people think is any kind of Pop-Punk band where they dress in the "Emo" fashion with guyliner and straightened black hair and have whiney vocals (or in some cases, just any band with the haircut and guyliner). Apparently that's Emo Pop Punk, but that's for another discussion.... The term emo came from "emotional hardcore", which means it stylistically originated from from the Hardcore Punk scene, particularly taking a lot of influence from the Post-Hardcore offshoot of the genre, due to its focus on more musical complexity, and allowing more melody. So Emo in many cases, is a very melodic form of Post-Hardcore, but also with a focus with confessional and introspective lyrics. In many later bands, it started delving into more like Alternative/Indie rock, which you'll see in the very late 90's/early 2000's. While some of them may not sound straight up Punk, you can still hear the Punk roots within their music. A lot of this was thanks to Weezer's highly influential album Pinkerton, which probably wouldn't be the first band many would assume was Emo, despite Rivers Cuomo being cited as starting the "Emo" glasses. Though they did drift away from Emo after Pinkerton. A subgenre of Emo is dubbed screamo, and is Emo but with more emphasis on the hardcore aspect. Screamo is a legitimate genre, despite everyone using it as a catch-all term for any band with scream/growled vocals whether they're punk or metal.
