General Full Name: Selia Feng Nickname: Seely, Failure Feng Gender: Female Race: Chinese Age: 14 Birthday: February 17 Resident of: Academia Member of: Exterior and Interior Appearance: ![]() Hours of dogged studying, sleep deprivation, and unyielding neurosis have taken their toll on Selia. Dark semicircles cradle her dull black eyes, which stare out blankly behind long, matted eyelashes. Caffiene, skipped meals, and the culmination of frequent panic attacks lend to her slight, shivery figure, a marked contrast to her weary, seemingly time-worn face. Her most striking attributes, however, are the welts across her sallow skin and a permanent crack on her thick glasses: proof of frequent scuffles with the ADF, close calls with the "problem child" department, and the unrestrained ire of her teachers. In order to offset the pain of these injuries, Selia treats them with homemade remedies (and much to the distaste and ridicule of her classmates, she carries the pungent smell of crushed herbs wherever she goes). In spite of Selia's sickly appearance, anyone caring to observe long enough can witness small signs of vivacity--a hint of a perpetual smile, a natural silkiness to her inky hair. But as it stands, nobody's terribly eager to spend much time with "Failure Feng" at all. Personality: Selia tries. She really, really, really does try--but she isn't a genius by any stretch of the imagination, and the whole of Academia knows it. Thrust into forced competition against thousands of naturally brilliant children, Selia has floundered since birth to match the intellect, beauty, and perfection The Laureate attempts to standardize. Unfortunately, an average amount of smarts, a tendency to study her heart out, and an unhealthy amount of optimistic persistence have made Selia little match for her superior classmates--and as such, she makes up for it with even more dogged amounts of hard work, effort, and self-motivation, even defying the concern of her parents and disregarding her health in an attempt to catch up with her "friends" at school. On any given school day, Selia is usually the most frazzled, paranoid, and delirious student present. Everyone knows to expect a desperate "What did you get for that question?" from her after even the smallest of exams; naturally, everyone also knows to ignore the query or respond with a snicker. However, Selia bears little ill-will against her classmates--envy, certainly, but not hatred. Not their fault that they're smarter, after all. She just has to study even harder. Despite her nigh-maniacal studying habits, Selia finds little legitimate pleasure in academia. As far as she's concerned, "making the grade" is just synonymous with "not getting beaten up"--be it by her classmates, her teachers, or the Academia authorities. Studying is necessary for survival in this world. Better to starve and suffer by her own hand than land her parents with the pain of owning a "problem child." Likes: Perfect grades, praise from the higher-ups, national holidays, sleep, food, cello music Dislikes: Breaking the rules, failing tests, failing anything, getting beaten up, hurting her parents Talents: Selia is rather adept at playing the cello. She practices scales, arpeggios, etudes, and rigid Laureate-approved classical staples at any given opportunity. Inabilities: As mentioned before, Selia lacks the natural intelligence, athleticism, and wit of her other classmates. She also has an inability to give up... or relax, for that matter. Fears: Fear of failing tests keeps Selia awake every night. Fear of finally being labeled a "problem child" and getting snatched away from her parents ensures that she'll never get a good night's sleep. History Past: Selia knows full well how difficult it was for her parents to be part of Academia at all. Against nigh-impossible odds, her mother and father--both well-respected teachers in their homeland--had fought their way onto the last ship to New Columbia, eager to be part of a society that valued education above superficiality. Selia's parents were young and idealistic; high off of their success, they became archivists in the Library of Light and steadily rose through the ranks. They had no doubt that their daughter would be just as brilliant as they--but when Selia proved herself to be less than "ideal," they quickly cast aside that notion and adored her all the same. In spite of the Fengs' best efforts, Selia's atrocious standardized test scores and subpar grades invariably brought legal and physical turmoil to the family. Only the Fengs' long-held position as Keepers of Light kept them from losing Selia to the "problem child" department, which still hounds them with "recommendations for expulsion." Though the Fengs have adamantly reassured their only daughter that they'll never let The Laureate snatch her away, Selia is well aware of the blight she poses to the family name. Against her mother's pleas and her father's concerns, Selia maintains a dogged pursuit of meticulous grades in order to liberate the Fengs from further humiliation. Dreams and Ambitions: To will herself through school and, at the very least, graduate. |
