Chapter 2 The person I need now is Clary. I make my way to her room and knock on the door. A moment later it swings open and I am faced with Jace Herondale who is not wearing a shirt. My face turns red and I mumble, “I’m looking for Clary.” “I assumed that it was her knocking.” “Yeah…” “She’s probably outside with the kids.” “Okay, I’ll just go and find her.” I walk away as quickly as I can without running. *** Clary is sitting in the gardens while the older kids run around her. I really do not understand why she has so many. “How are they?” I ask her. “Good.” I look around. Jocelyn, the oldest is chasing after her brothers. At seven years old she looks a bit like I did at her age with straight red hair, but gold eyes instead of my blue. Stephen and Valentine, the twins are running ahead of her probably having made her mad. At least they know to run from her. Stephen looks like a mini version of his father, while Valentine has his mother’s traits. Celine and Simon are sitting in the grass, building something out of it. Their blond curls glow in the sun. David is only two but he is stumbling after the older kids as fast as his legs will take him. Alicante is in Clary’s lap. Only born eleven months ago, she has her mother’s red curls and green eyes. I wondered about her name when they chose it. It wasn’t a traditional name, but I guess that they haven’t always picked those anyway, but naming her after a city is interesting. I think it fits. Clary calls her Cante for short. I wonder how many kids Clary will end up having. She’s already pregnant again, but I guess this way they’ll have more friends than we did. “I wanted to bring them outside before tonight,” she tells me. “Yeah, the party.” “I’m guessing that’s why you came to me.” “I’m not sure what to expect, the only big parties I’ve ever been to were weddings and I was just a little kid.” “Come with me,” she says, “Stephen, Valentine, Jocelyn!” she calls handing me Cante to go pick up David, “Simon, Celine!” It’s quite impressive how she can get all of them to follow her just by calling their names. I never would be able to. “I’ll just take them back to Jace.” “Oh speaking of Jace,” I tell her, “I ran into him when I was looking for you.” “Okay.” “He wasn’t wearing a shirt.” “Sorry.” I smile. “It was a bit awkward at the time, especially since he didn’t seem fazed by it at all.” After leaving the kids with Jace, Clary and I head back to my room. On my bed is a dress that I will be wearing. “Val, remember to have fun at this party. And if all of the people are idiots, you don’t have to marry any of them. Ever. Mom wants to make us happy and if these people are terrible then you can find someone else and I will make sure you are allowed to. It’s not like you’ll have to marry any of them any time soon. She did this all the time when I was your age and I still ended up with Jace.” “Thanks Clary,” I tell her and it really has helped, “Will you be there?” “Of course. Oh and stop by Isabelle to let her do your hair, she loves to and is quite good at it.” “Okay.” “See you tonight.” After she leaves I look down at the dress. It is purple but very top is made of lace along with the sleeves. The skirt goes all the way to the floor. It looks like something for someone older than me, but I’m still excited. Sitting next to it is a pair of very high purple heels which is unfortunate because I don’t like shoes to begin with, but I’ll deal with it. For the first time I’m being allowed to grow up. Maybe Jon will let me travel with him soon too. I head to Isabelle’s room for her to do my hair and she curls it and puts it up with a fancy braid. I almost miss the weight of it on my shoulders, but I remind myself of the party and smile. My mother comes to find me soon after I am ready, complimenting me on how I look before telling me to come greet the guests. I follow her to the doors and wait. Harold is the first one to arrive. He has long brown hair that looks like it needs to be washed and is carrying a sword which he spins as he walks to show off. Benjamin is next. He has too much facial hair, especially since he is only fifteen. He has a razor in his hand however, which makes me wonder if he didn’t have time to shave before he came. Timothy arrives third. He is carrying a puppy in his arms which is by far the best yet. His brown hair is matted to his head and he completely ignores everything except for his puppy. Maxwell comes fourth he isn’t carrying anything and makes polite conversation. So far he is my best option, although it is a bit awkward that his sister is married to my brother. Tyler arrives after Max and looks like he wants to punch something the whole time. He has a terrifying amount of muscle and seems like someone I ought to avoid. Peter is sixth to arrive. He spends the whole time analyzing the side of the building as if trying to figure out how to climb. In his hands he has a coil of rope. David is the seventh to come. He holds his sword out from his body as if daring anyone to come close to him. In his other hand is a paper on poison. I decide to stay away from him as much as I can. Michael is eighth. He carries a flask which drinks from throughout the whole time everyone is talking. He already looks as if he’s had too much to drink. Robert arrives after Michael. He is holding a broom as if he plans to sweep the house. He doesn’t seem the most intelligent, but he is kind enough and I decide he is okay. Adam comes last. He seems more interested in a glass of water than us and nearly tries to swim in the fountain before his mother grabs him. After everyone has arrived I look around. Hopefully I’ll still have fun at this party despite the fact that almost all of the people seem like they should be avoided. Despite my worries the party is amazing. I end up dancing with all ten guys and while I don’t like most of them, it’s not the worst. Everything is beautiful, the dishes, the clothes, the food, even the room itself. I end up talking to Max and Robert about their lives. Max had an older brother and sister too and we swap stories. At the end of the night I almost wish for it to never end. After everyone has left, Clary comes up to me. “How was it?” she asks. “Amazing.” |
