“Hey, old man! One Tonkotsu ramen! And make it the biggest bowl you have!” a voice rung out, as a person entered the small ramen store, which was hidden away in a cramped side street. It did not get many visitors, but the man who owned it, a retired ninja named Kenta, was too stubborn to let it close, even if it meant he was losing money. Making ramen was what he was meant to do, he said, and he would not allow anything to get in his way. This caused the young boy who had just entered, Hyuuga Haruki, to visit as often as he could, feeling sorry for the man, not to mention loving the food. The old man was in fact a great cook, but his store was still not popular, because of it's location making it unknown to most, an he did not have the money to move it to a better spot. This was where Haruki came in to help, hoping his frequent visits would one day allow the man to save up. It was a foolish hope, thinking one person could do so much, but the boy would not give up, just like Kenta himself. “Sounds like you've got something to celebrate?” Kenta asked, as he looked over his shoulder, stirring a pot of noodles. He then noticed the one thing different about the boy: His newly attained Hitai-ate. Widening his eyes and putting on a smile that seemed to stretch from one size of his old face to the other, he turned and walked to the counter, at which the boy was now sitting, beaming at him, while fidgeting with the symbol on his forehead. He had not been able to keep his hands off it ever since graduation. It was as if he had to check back to see that it was still there once every ten minutes or less. “Oh, so you finally graduated? About time! When I was your age, I was already a full-fledged Chuunin!” “Well, times have changed, gramps, but don't worry, I'll catch up to you,” Haruki said, as he leaned on the counter with his arms, still fidgeting with the metal headband with his right hand. “I'll go train after I've got some grub and celebrated a bit. I have to get ready for my first mission!” “You have a mission already?” Kenta asked, raising a brow. Haruki, however, shook his head. “No mission yet, but I still gotta prepare, right?” This time, Kenta was the one to nod, as he poured the contents of another pot into a bowl, which was already filled with noodles, and placed it on the counter, before saying something that made the boy protest. “On the house!” “Hell no!” Haruki said, as he sat up straight, looking at the man as if he had insulted him. “You don't have money for that! I'll pay full price! More even! I'm a ninja now, I'll have plenty of money!” To this, the man just chuckled, shaking his head, causing the boy to smile. He then reached for a pair of chopsticks, snapped them perfectly in two and dug in with a loud: “Itadakimasu~!” |

It was yet another sunny day in the village as Tatsukerai Garyou walked the stone pathway that wound down the main street, a gaggle of children at his heels. With his hands behind his head and a rather uninterested if not downright displeased look on his face, the young man paid the children little attention as they all fawned over an object in the hands of a little boy with short hair, instead he merely kept walking foward with the group close behind despite their distraction. After a while, whatever it was that was bothering young Garyou boiled to the point that he couldn't contain it any more, causing the young man to spin on his heel and fold his arms in front of his chest “that's enough you guys, give it back” he boomed, commanding the attention of every child before him as he outstretched his right hand. After a few seconds, the kids let out flurry of disappointed whines and sighs before handing the small piece of engraved metal attached to a maroon cloth back to Garyou who promptly tied it rather unceremoniously around his waist “I don't get why you guys are so amazed by it, it's just a stinkin' piece of metal...” he said, continuing his stride down the street. “No way, Aniki!” one of the younger boys cried “that hitai-ate means you're a full fledged ninja now, which means you can beat up the bad guys!” at this, the rest of the litter grew noisy in agreement. Garyou couldn't help but smile at their amazement; it was a point of pride for him, even if it did take two years longer than intended to get this far. Unfortunately, he knew as well as anyone that that was no one's fault but his own, but he'd be damned if he ever admitted it. Turning down a side street, Garyou's eyes fixated themselves upon a sign advertising ramen. Almost as quickly as the words registered in his brain did his stomach let out an audible gurgle, deciding the young man's next course of action. “Wait here, you guys” he said before entering the rather small establishment. Garyou leaned up against the counter and placed his order “Can I get....” he took a look over his shoulder at the children standing outside, silently counting them off “six bowls of your mildest ramen and one large order of your spiciest?” he asked the man behind the counter who quickly rung up his total and got to work once Garyou paid him. As he stood there waiting, he noticed in the corner of his eyes another person sitting down. Garyou had seen him before; Hyuuga Haruki had been in his classes for several years, but the two had never really talked all that much. In fact, he too, had just graduated from the academy “You seem pretty excited about that thing, eh? I don't understand some people's fascination with it, a warrior should be measured for his skills, not by what symbol he wears...” he said to the black haired boy as his single large bowl of ramen arrived before him. “This … is amazing, gramps! Another A+ in my books!” the Hyuuga said with his mouth well filled with noodles. “It's so sad so little people know of this place, they'd be amazed!” Just then, the boy got an interesting idea. Pointing his chopsticks at the man behind the counter, he decided to propose it: “Look, whenever I get the time, I'll try and do some advertising for you, free of charge, how about that?” The question did not get answered, as another boy, one whom Haruki recognized as Tatsukerai Garyou, who had been his classmate for years. However, the only thing the boy really knew about the other was that he was apparently heir to his clan, and a tad arrogant – all right, make that a lot. However, Haruki was not one to judge, and he was sure the guy was pretty decent deep down. He then listened as Garyou placed an order for seven bowls. Widening his white eyes, the boy looked at the money being passed from one hand to another. Quite a stack. Not enough for a better location for the shop, but it would be a step on the road. Just then, the brown haired boy turned to Haruki. “I agree, I do, except you seem to misunderstand something,” Haruki said in reply, as he tapped the hitai-ate with his chopsticks. “This is not just a symbol of being a shinobi, it is a representation of skill. You don't get to graduate without skill after all.” Beaming at the other boy for a second, Haruki inhaled a batch of noodles, before he continued. “Of course, this thing alone won't make you successful as a shinobi alone. In fact, it has nothing to do with that. Just being one doesn't make you a good one. Know what I'm saying?” Meanwhile, Kenta was standing behind the counter, smiling and shaking his head. Haruki smiled as well as he saw this. “What's up, old man? You disagree?” “No, not at all,” the man chuckled, as he began pouring ramen in six separate bowls. “You just remind me of myself in my young days. I thought I knew it all myself, knew what made a good shinobi. However, you grow, learn new things.” “You sound like you discovered some secret to being a shinobi,” Haruki said with a smirk. “Wanna share?” “Unfortunately, no. These things are supposed to be discovered by oneself,” Kenta replied with a raised finger. “But trust me when I say that it takes a lot more than skill to be a good shinobi.” Placing the six bowls on the counter in front of Garyou, the old man smiled at him. “The world of shinobi is a complex one, has always been, will always be, no matter how much things change. They can make truces and alliances, build villages and settle down, but that thing will never change.” Haruki sighed. “Whatever you say, gramps,” he said, before they both let out a light chuckle. He then turned back towards Garyou and held out a hand. “Anyway, no matter how you look at it, congratulations is in order. I'll be looking forward to working with you, comrade!” |

Garyou listened as the old man and the Hyuuga boy discussed what it was to be a good shinobi, though honestly, the attention the young man paid was minimal. They went on about how it was more than skill that made a good shinobi, though the old man's words were cryptic and vague “Heh, please...” the boy said under his breath as he shovelled a mouthful of the spicy ramen into his mouth. The flavour danced on his tongue, leaving behind a distinct numbing sensation that, surprisingly, didn't hinder his appetite. The old man continued to talk, spouting some nonesense about how the world never changes but Garyou kept his words to himself in a rare example of restraint. He so badly wanted to argue that them even being in this village together is a sign of monumental change, but he knew that the old man would simply retort with a wiser-than-thou answer that Garyou wouldn't swallow anyways. Instead he let the two finish their conversation, only turning his head when the boy began talking to him once more “I suppose they are, yeah..” he shook the Hyuuga's hand briefly but firmly “Likewise, I guess...though I warn you, I'm gunning for number one and while we may be brothers in arms, we're also rivals...” he said, turning to look at the children “Hey, you guys! You're food is getting cold and I didn't pay for 6 uneaten bowls of ramen!” he cried, the children scampering into the small ramen shack and grabbing the six bowls, digging into them then and there. The young man watched them take the food without so much as a thank you, but he had grown used to it. Whether they said it or not didn't matter, he knew they looked up to him and they were, after all, family. Garyou turned back to the Hyuuga boy after another mouthful of his ramen “If I'm not mistaken, you're Hyuuga Haruki, yes? I'm Tatsukerai Garyou, though I'm sure you probably already knew that...” he said, knowing full well that his reputation preceeded him. Whether they liked it or not, people got to know who he was even if they had never personally known him. It was just one of many side effects of his personality. “Well, well” came a voice from behind the young man, causing him to turn in his seat. His eyes narrowed the moment they locked onto the visage of Ryuukami Kidourui and two other members of the Ryuukami clan. Ryuukami Kidourui wasn't the pride of the Ryuukami clan by any stretch of the imagination, in fact, he was only a genin rank thug himself. He had an almost snake like quality to his face: beady eyes, narrow, pointed nose and an almost permanent sneer. He and Garyou had had many confrontations before, though the Tatsukerai always stubbornly chose to fight solo, leading to his defeat on many of those occasions. He wasn't exactly proud of that. “If it isn't daddy's little girl” Kidourui said, a light chuckle tailing his words “and look, he brought the brat brigade with him!”. Garyou tried his best to keep himself calm, at least until he could get these guys outside of the ramen shop. He was brash, but Garyou had no desire to trash this place. “What's that you're eating, brat?” he said, grabbing one of the bowls from the Tatsukerai children and taking a slurp of the broth, almost emptying the bowl before pouring the rest out “Ugh, disgusting! Who made this crap?” he growled, throwing the bowl to the ground and wiping his mouth. Kidourui placed an arm around Garyou's shoulder and gave off a quiet little chuckle “I heard you finally graduated, Ga-ga-chan! A full seven years after entering...wow, you're daddy must be so proud!” Garyou felt his eyebrow twitch as he clenched his teeth. “Kidou...I was thinking you might like the taste of this one a bit more” the young man growled before ramming the half eaten bowl of spicy ramen into Kidourui's face and following up with a kick to the gut that caused the Ryuukami to fall into his two friends and out of the ramen shack, bowling them over. “Excuse me...” Garyou said to the everyone in the small space before walking outside, cracking his knuckles “Too spicy for ya', 'Ki-ki-chan'!?” |

“Naturally,” Haruki said with a smirk, as Garyou mentioned that they were more than team mates – they were rivals. It was good with some friendly competition, it helped you grow strong more so than it did just doing it by yourself. He then watched as Garyou called for a whole bunch of kids, who dug in without as much as a thank you or a “let's eat”. No manners. However, both he and Kenta just smiled, before Garyou once more spoke to the Hyuuga, causing the white orbs to look at the boy. “You're correct in both,” Haruki said with a smirk. Just then, another voice filled the small ramen booth, as a person, whom Haruki did not recognize, and what seemed to be a pair of bodyguards. It seemed they knew Garyou, though not in a positive way from how they spoke, to their body language. Their bodies were tensed, as if ready for a fight. Haruki kept himself ready, just in case. Simply watching, he saw how the stranger stole a bowl from one of the kids and dug in,almost finishing before letting the remains fall to the floor. Haruki noticed Kenta make a move, but placed an arm in front of him, looking over his shoulder as he whispered, just loud enough for him to hear: “Let me handle this.” Kenta did not looked satisfied with that, but he kept back, just as Garyou tossed his food into the head of the Ryuukami and kicked him out of the booth, following up. Haruki too, jumped off his stool and walked outside, watching as the two goons helped their leader back on his feet. “You shouldn't have done that,” Haruki said. It sounded like he was talking to the Ryuukami, but in fact, he was talking to Garyou, referring to the fact he had just wasted good food by pressing it into the face of some dude who did not deserve and inkling of its magnificent taste. “And you.” He looked at the Ryuukami, whom Garyou had reffered to as “Ki-ki.chan”, though Haruki doubted that was even remotely close to his real name. “How dare you call Kenta's food disgusting? Have you no taste?!” Turning to Garyou, Haruki looked at him with a serious stare. “Let's show these bums a lesson.” |

Garyou's eyes flicked briefly to the Hyuuga boy as he followed him outside. He didn't exactly understand what he thought he was doing, involving himself in a centuries old feud so nonchalantly. Regardless, there wasn't any time to worry about it now, he'd give the guy a piece of his mind later, if he really felt the need anymore. For now, he had a fight to win and a couple Ryuukami to embarass. At this point, Kidourui and his followers had risen to their feet, clearly angry at the actions of the younger Tatsukerai boy “Think you're a tough guy, you piece of Tatsukerai scum!?” he roared, a smirk appearing on Garyou's face. “As a matter of fact, yeah, I do...and you know what, I'm just going to skip past the part where I give you guys one last warning to get out of here” he responded, running forward and delivering a swift punch to the Ryuukami standing to Kidourui's right before attempting a swinging roundhouse directed at Kidourui himself, who unfortunately managed to duck it, sweeping the young warrior's leg out from underneath him. Garyou hit the ground, but rolled out of the way quickly before a follow-up stomp could connect. With a quick kip-up, Garyou sent a fist flying towards Kidourui but found that it too was avoided. While Kidourui dealt with Garyou and the Ryuukami had been sucker punched recovered, the third member of the trio headed directly for the Hyuuga boy, deciding that he too, needed to be dealt with. “Who do you think you are, white-eyes, associating yourself with this piece of trash!?” he cried before leaping into the air and spinning into a roundhouse kick directed at Haruki's head, a fine example of a Konoha Senpuu. Meanwhile, the fight between Kidourui and Garyou raged on, with the two fighters matched near equally. It had gotten down to the point where the two of them merely stood in place trading blow for blow while trying to dodge whatever extra punches they could, however, Garyou quickly remembered that he had forgotten about the extra man, who had now locked him in a full nelson from behind. This allowed Kidourui a fine opportunity to deal the young hot head a number of blows to the stomach. After several punches however, Garyou wisened up, sending two feet firmly into Kidourui's own stomach before headbutting his grappling opponent and flipping him judo-style over Garyou's shoulder with great effort. A rather gassed Garyou delivered a quick kick to the Ryuukami male's head, knocking him out cold. It was an even fight now, both men realized as they locked gazes once more. One on one. Garyou was going to enjoy this. |

When the Ryuukami jumped at the boy, he kept completely still, the leg flying at his head at high speed, only to be stopped just before it struck. The boy then twisted is body, before going into a violent spin, yellow chakra surrounding him in a dome-like fashion, continuously cutting at the other boy, before it finally sent him flying, landing hard upon the ground. “Didn't you mother warn you to never try to play the Taijutsu game with a Hyuuga?” the boy asked, as he finally stopped his spin, looking at the Ryuukami with piercing white eyes. “And who I am? I'm Haruki of the Hyuuga clan! Don't forget it!” The other shinobi did not seem impressed though, and got, launching a fist towards the boy, who simply moved his body to the side, avoiding the blow, before launching his own fist into his opponents jaw. Haruki was not particularly strong, but it was a nice clean hit, and sure to sting. However, it was not the main attack. It simply caused the Ryuukami to stagger, allowing the boy to place his palm upon his opponents chest. “Your odds are bad, using Taijutsu against the greatest Taijutsu style in the world,” he said, before the veins around his eyes became more distinct. “Juuken!” Again the Ryuukami was sent staggering, grasping his chest in pain, but he was still standing, something that kinda impressed the Hyuuga. The Juuken was a powerful style, one that could end a battle in one move against any opponent, as no one could train their inner body and organs to deal with the damage. The boy figured his opponent had a high tolerance for pain. It seemed this battle might drag out for a bit... “I'll show you, you white eyed freak!” the Ryuukami roared, as he ran in, launched a spinning back kick towards the boy's head. Haruki, however, bend backwards, using his natural flexibility to avoid the attack, before jumping into the air as his opponent followed up with a low kick. “You're too straight forward! It's too easy to read!” Haruki said, as he placed a foot in the guy's face and pushed off, getting into a back flip, landing back on his legs, just as the guy came at him again, apparently so fuelled with rage he had not even felt the kick to the head. He prepared to launch a kick, though just as the Hyuuga reacted to it, he side-stepped, getting around the boy, before launching another spinning kick. “Much better! But not good enough!” Haruki remarked, as he flipped back, over the leg, which had had clearly seen coming using his Byakugan, before going into a spin in mid air, blasting the guy away with another Kaiten. However, as Haruki landed on the ground, he could feel the toll of using the Kaiten twice, while also focusing on avoiding hits. His stamina had dropped, and the guy still got back up, though he was huffing and bruised. Using his Bykaugan to take in all of his surroundings, he checked on Garyou, who seemed to be in a situation where he and his opponent were too equal to tell who was winning, and while Haruki had so far avoided everything his opponent had thrown at him, it seemed he was tiring far faster than the other. He had to think of something fast... |

Garyou charged at Kidourui head long, leaping into the air with his right foot pointed forward at the Ryuukami's face. His target once again manuevered out of the way, countering with a swift kick to Garyou's ribcage, causing him to fall to his knee. Acting fast, the Tatsukerai genin attempted to sweep the leg of the older Ryuukami, finding only moderate success in that he managed to trip up Kidourui slightly, but not take him to the ground entirely. Regardless, this provided Garyou an opportunity to get to to his feet. Spinning from his crouched position on the ground, Garyou rose up, fully extended and delivered a 360 degree roundhouse kick using the momentum from his spin. While Kidourui had managed to get his right arm up in time to block the kick, the attack still caused him to jolt, leaving him open to another strike. With a quick right hand punch to the face, Garyou finally had forced an opening on his opponent, delivering several left and right hand punches to Kidourui's head before the Ryuukami could push away and recover. Blood now flowed from his nose as well as a cut above his left eyebrow, but the reptile like man didn't back down. Instead he took a deep breath and formed what seemed to be... “Hand seals!?” Garyou hissed before quickly dashing out of his position. A bright ball of fire landed directly where Garyou had been standing a direct hit had Garyou not decided to act fast. Sliding to a halt, the Tatsukerai looked with confusion at the Ryuukami “I thought you Ryuukami didn't believe in Ninjutsu!?” he cried, evoking a tired chuckle from Kidourui “Times are changing, runt!” Garyou's eyes narrowed with anger before sprinting directly for Kidourui once more, fully expecting another fireball to come his way. His prediction would prove accurate, for as soon as he had managed to close the gap, another blazing ball of flame shot from Kidourui's mouth. The only saving grace Garyou had was his foresight into the matter, having just enough time to throw himself to the ground. His dash allowed him just enough speed to slide between Kidourui's wide-legged stance. With a small window to act, Garyou propped himself to his feet, wrapped his arms around Kidourui's body and heaved the Ryuukami up off the ground “Stick to what you're stinkin' family teaches you, rat-face!” Garyou growled as he struggled to successfully pull off the suplex, driving Kidourui's shoulders into the ground. Even with being on the delivering end of that technique, Garyou had never quite felt the pain that went into pulling off a full suplex. His back felt like a dry piece of wood waiting to snap underneath the strain, causing him to let his legs slip out from underneath him. Letting go of the now painfully unconscious Kidourui, Garyou rested himself on the ground for a few moments before rolling over and propping himself up. Shaking his head, he quickly questioned himself to see if all that had actually just happened, and upon seeing the two unconscious Ryuukami teens in front of him, he assured himself it was. In that instance, Garyou's ego swelled about tenfold “Hell yeah!” he roared triumphantly, throwing a classic two-fingered v-sign into the air above him “That's what you get when you mess with Tatsukerai Garyou, Ahou!” Seconds later, the young warrior fell onto his behind, victorious but dead-tired. |

Looking at his opponent with his full attention, Haruki pondered his options. He only really knew basic Juuken and Kaiten, except for his academy jutsu. The other guys seemed resistant to the pain of his Juuken somehow, though a few more hits would surely send him down. However, as the Hyuuga watched his foe, he noticed that he was now circling him cautiously. He had learned is lesson it seemed, and was now looking for an opened – not that there was any, the Byakugan closing any and all of such gaps. Haruki was getting tired though. He had never used Kaiten in a fighting situation before. Looking at the Ryuukami circling him like a tiger surveying its next meal, he tensed up, just as the Ryuukami came at him. At first, he dodged a pair of blows, though suddenly, the Ryuukami did an unexpected turn and was able to land a surprising hit on the boy's face, which opened him up to more. More hits fell on him, until he staggered back, obviously hurt. Looking up, he watched the Ryuukami's triumphant and arrogant face, just for a brief second, before another fist came at him. However, this time, The Hyuuga side-stepped and moved in close, retracting his arm, his palm open. He knew he did not know the jutsu he was about to try out, nor did he have the ability to successfully achieve its results, but he was going to mimic it... “Hakke Nishou!” the Hyuuga said, as he rammed two hands into the body of his opponent, sending his back, staggering. “Yonshou!” two more strike landed on the guy's chest. “Hachishou!” Four strikes, aimed at his abdomen. “Juurokushou!” Double up, to eight strike, spread out over the whole body. “Sanjuunishou!” The boy began on the next sixteen, though a shot of pain stopped him after a mere five, leaving the Ryuukami to stagger back and fall onto the ground, unconscious. It had been an imperfect techniqe, but it had proven effective. Haruki was victorious. With that, he fell to his knees, more exhausted than he had ever been in his life... “Kids these days, thinking they're all big shots,” Kenta's voice could be heard saying, as the old man emerged from the ramen shop, looking at the five Shinobi on the ground. “These villages were made to keep us from fighting, but not even that has changed.” A chuckle left his mouth, as he walked over to one of the Ryuukami and poked him with a foot. “They'll be back up soon enough, but maybe I should tell their clan to come pick 'em up?” Harui tiredly turned his head to look at Kenta. He then, however, looked to Garyou with a questioning look. “Who were this assholes anyway?” he demanded to know, still not getting up, as that was too much effort for the tired shinobi. |

Garyou remained seated on the ground for several moments, just looking at the unconscious Ryuukami boys. He had done this, granted, he had a bit of help, but he hadn't asked for it. For the first time in a long while, it seemed that his skills actually had some measurable value. At this point, Kenta, the shop owner, had walked outside to see the aftermath of the mayhem and adding in his two-cents about it all. Not far behind him was the group of Tatsukerai children, whose jaws dropped almost simultaneously upon seeing the destruction, even though Garyou had no doubt in his mind that they were watching the entire time. Rising to his feet, Garyou dusted off the seat of his pants “They were Ryuukami guys, just common pieces of dirt who think they can act tough and push us around...” the Tatsukerai spat on Kidourui mid sentence “...the bastards. Don't bother contacting their family, they won't come anyways, besides, they'll be up and running away in no time” Garyou said as he dragged the bodies out of the middle of the road, propping them up against the side of the ramen shack. Wiping the sweat off his brow, the tired combatant turned his attention to the children “You guys don't say anything about this to the adults, understand? If you have to tell anyone, tell the other kids...now get home, it's almost dinner time” he said, his expression reverting back to its carefree, self-assured default. The kids all nodded and promised not to tell any of the clan elders before running off down the street, Garyou calling after them “And you go straight home alright!? I don't want to have to beat up anybody else today because of you guys!” the young man folded his arms once more and let off a slight, tired chuckle before he turned to the Hyuuga boy “For the record, while I admire your tenacity and ability to handle a fight, I recommend you not involve yourself in any more fights between Ryuukami and Tatsukerai. It's a largely honor based thing, and having an outsider help you win is almost worse than losing....” Garyou paused briefly and looked at three Ryuukami once more “then again, it did feel pretty sweet, kicking their asses like that...so, thanks” he shot the Hyuuga a grin and turned to the old man this time “As for you, old-timer, my old man would have my hide if he found out what I did today, especially considering that it started in your shop, so for that you have my apologies. If any of those guys come back here looking for trouble, you just let one of us Tatsukerai boys know and we'll make sure they never step down this side-street again” |
