Operation Claymore

Operation Claymore was the codename for a Celestial Black Ops Commando raid on the Ocrus Islands during the Yoriel-Sandra conflict on New Year's Day. Orcus Island was an important center for production of fish oil and glycerine, which was used by the Yoriel war industry when they launched an incursion and captured the Islands in December 12th, Polara 38. For the Yoriel war machine, the island was a point of high strategic value, as it allowed the Republic to deploy naval vessels and support craft to assist in the war effort.

The Landings were carried out on the eve of new years day by men of the 1st, 3rd and 7th Commando, supported by elements of the Royal Engineers and informants from the Orcus Volunteer Rifles, all of which deployed from the Castra Class Guided Missile Cruiser 'Sandman'. The 1st Commando made an unopposed landing at the southeastern shoreline and continued to meet no opposition.

The original plan had been to avoid contact with the local garrison forces and inflict maximum damage to the Yoriel-controlled industries, seaports and vital communications structures to pave the way for a follow up by the 33rd Naval Battlegroup, which had, by December 22nd been deployed for an operation to retake Ocrus Island. The 3rd Commando infiltrated Orcus Seaport by water and succeeded in demolishing vital support structures before retreating under covering fire from elements of the OVR, while the 1st Commando attacked the fish oil factories and destroyed some 4,400 tons of oil and glycerine.

Mission 'Hunter'

A secondary objective of Operation Claymore was for the 3rd Commando to capture a vital Yoriel signal operations facility on Ocrus Island in an attempt to seize codebooks, electronic encryption protectors for the Royal Signal Intelligence Corp. The mission was carried out by the 7th Commando with support from the Royal Engineers, but the infiltrating team suffered catastrophic causalities and only managed to escape with the codebooks when the OVR arrived to bail them out. Mission Hunter quickly escalated into anti-Striker warfare, as the 3rd Commando was unable to capture Republican Strikers and had to exfiltrate the Seaport, and encroaching Yoriel garrison which had been activated by the explosions at the Seaport began to surround the area that the task force had been holed up at. The battle moved into brutal door-to-door fighting through the Town of Seraforets to reach the extraction point. Two Zhuravlik units, belonging to the 13th Royal Guards Battalion were scrambled from Rosen Airbase to support the recovery mission, carried out by the 332nd Naval Gunship Wing. The fighting only subsided after the successful extraction of the infiltrating Commando teams, on the early morning January 1st, Polara 39.

Aftermath

In the aftermath the evaluation of the operation differed. The Sandra High Command deemed it a success, as the operation delayed a planned incursion by Yoriel due to the lack of a secure supply line, and as a consequence, had to delay Operation Eudoros for over a full month, allowing the Celestial forces to reinforce defensive lines before they could have been exploited. However, Celestial Joint Task Force Command considered the operation an overall failure due to the near complete loss of the 3rd and 7th Commando. And despite achieving success in recovering vital Signal Intelligence codebooks, they were never able to fully exploit the advantages gained before Yoriel managed to secure their intelligence network by March, Polara 39.

A week after Operation Claymore, Celestial forces, spearheaded by the 33rd Naval Battlegroup initiated Operation Sledgehammer, together with support from the local volunteer corps, managed to push Yoriel off the Island, forcing them to retreat back to the continent. The Island would encounter several more fierce fighting between Celestial and Republican forces attempting to control the Island for themselves; neither side would never actually control the Island for more than several weeks before losing hold.
