I'm making this tutorial for those of you who want to be/thinking of becoming, a translator~ The format for a script usually is something like this: If it's a manga read right to left, you would type the text in order, from left to right. Vise versa if it's a left to right manga (usually this is manhwa, or Korean manga.) What to Type a Script in When typing a script, all you really need is an application like Microsoft Word, Notepad, etc. Just make sure to save in .rtf , .txt. , or .doc , since some computers have problems opening up a script if it's not a format their program understands. If that happens they usually open it up with it looking like a huge blob of random characters. If you have no application to type up scripts with on their computer, some alternatives are GoogleDocs (which is online) or download OpenOffice for free. The Format of the Script A script usually has a certain format. At the top of their scripts, usually translators leave a key to let the typesetter know the differences between bubbles, word splits, panel splits, etc. An example of this could be: Quote: KEY / : Text separator SFX: SFX T/N: Translators Note [ ]: Boxed text " ": Dialogue *: Thoughts (text in bubbles) ( ): Background text ST: Small text -----: Panel separator B: When a page is blank ~~~: Page divider It may seem like a hassle to type, but reality, it's not really that hard. Sometimes when you start out you might stumble and forget what means what, but after beginning eventually it becomes much more natural. Several translators change their key to suit themselves, so don't be afraid to change around your own format (Just make sure to mention it in the key). They key is usually placed on top of the entire script, before any of the script begins. Here's a sample of a script: Sample Script Key / : Text separator SFX: SFX T/N: Translators Note [ ]: Boxed text " ": Dialogue : Thoughts (text in bubbles) ( ): Background text ST: Small text -----: Panel separator B: When a page is blank ~~~: Page divider Page 1: Mary: "Give my cookies back!" John: Should I..?* "What cookies?" SFX: LAUGHS [Mary's Birthday is today, her cookies are gone!] ~~~ Page 2: Ken: "We all want cookies!" Mary" "BUT MY COOKIES ARE GONE!" Ken: "GIVE US COOKIES!!!" ST: "We like chocolate chip." ~~~ Page 3: B ~~~ Page 4: Ken: "Hahaha John, give them back." / "I know you took them." John: "What are you talking about?" SFX: GRINS ----- Jane: "I stole John's cookies!" Mary: "Wait, you mean my cookies?" (So that's where they were...) When Typing in the Script Some people type scripts with the name of the speaker before the text like this: Like This : Harry's bubble has the words 'I want pie' in another language. Then Mary's bubble has the words 'I don't like pie'. This type of script would have had it typed this way: Harry: "I want pie." Mary: "I don't like pie." Another way is typing the script without the speakers name, just in the order of appearance: Like This : Harry's bubble has the words 'I want pie' in another language. Then Mary's bubble has the words 'I don't like pie'. This type of script would have had it typed this way: "I want pie." "I don't like pie." Any questions can be posted below.
