I just do what I do
Lying there. In a metaphorical and literal pit of despair. Gwen couldn't imagine whether or not Xelobo got away, she could only hear cannon fire at this point. She had to commit to the plan without a single hitch or suspicion that she helped the "criminal" escape. She had to do her best in this situation so the both of them could get away, but all she wanted to do was lift her head to see if he hadn't been hit. She couldn't really see his plan, but it appeared to involve pushing multiple boats out to sea. Whether or not something like that would work, Gwen couldn't even check. Just lying there, pretending to be unconscious.

Half an hour in Gwen's mind passed before anyone came down to the docks. She heard the shuffling of feet in the dirt; boots belonging to marine soldiers who have surely come to assess the situation.

Would anyone notice I was gone? I am just an Ensign...

After a few short moments the answer was clear, as she heard a very familiar voice.

"Gwen! Are you alright??"

The voice belonged to Bryan, a peer of Gwen's who showed her around and even had lunch with her today.

Lunch...how long ago was it that I was the Gwen who hadn't committed any sort of crimes? Now I've let a man I barely know out of prison...

Gwen remember back to the kiss that took place just a short while ago and began to blush. Her lips against his; the entire thing felt awkward, but in a nice kind of way. She had really never thought of anything like such before, but would she ever be able to kiss him again?

"Hey look, she blushed at hearing my voice!"

Gwen's face went from that of a love struck girl to a pissed off old man. Opening her eyes slowly, she knew she had to put on a good act.

"What...what happened? He knocked me out with that weapon of his..."

Gwen hesitated a moment, almost involuntarily before her next question.

"Did we get that guy?"

Gwen bit the inside of her cheek. She really didn't know why she kissed him or why she was even feeling this way, but she really didn't want him to be hurt, or worse, drowned.

He was an innocent man, there is no problem with how I feel...I protect the innocent.

Bryan and the other marine next to him shrugged.

"We can't actually be sure if we got him or not. There were boats on fire before we even began to shoot at him. We hit the ones that weren't at least."

This was a bit too much for Gwen. She felt like she might pass out for real this time, but that would be too inconvenient. She had to appear happy...she had to appear happy.

"Oh! That is weird, why were they on fire already? He knocked me out before then, I think."

Bryan began to speak up but just before, the Captain of the base approached the three of them. He didn't look happy.

"Gwen, follow me."

Gwen gulped as she climbed the small ditch back onto even land. If the captain had something to tell her, she couldn't imagine it was good.

What if he knows? I would be in the biggest trouble. Something like this...if Xelo was going to be killed for thinking he killing a corrupt marine, what will they do with his liberator?

Thoughts racing through her head, the young marine knew that trouble would be coming her way. Walking with the captain through the yard back to the base, she was able to take a look back at the open sea that her boyf-XELOBO would have escaped on. The water was on fire and dinghies were torn to pieces, becoming almost just driftwood. Turning her head swiftly back, she tried to not think about it too much. Xelobo was much too strong a person to be dealt with like that. She had to push forward, much like he does. If he was alive, she would receive some sort of call. She would wait until that time comes and push panicking to another day.

After a few minutes, the two were inside the captain's room, which now had a shattered window where Gwen assumed Xelo had busted through. She wanted to smile at the sight, but she knew it would be bad. Taking a seat, the captain sat behind his desk and rolled around on the chair. After a few seconds he spoke up.

"Gwen, I heard about the situation. I need to know everything about what happened."

Gwen sighed inside her head. If this were the case, maybe they didn't have any idea. The new marine began to relay the events to her captain of what happened, only making it seem as if Xelobo was the criminal. She told him about taking her keys, and how she chased him out only to get chained, and then to the docks to be knocked out. She might've made his strength out more than she saw, but she knew he was tough. At the end of the story, Capt. Gen Gar folded his hands in front of his eyes. After a moment he spoke up again.

"Thank you...Ensign Gwen...for trying your best. You did really well here. Of all the marines in the base, you chased this criminal bastard all the way out. You really minimized casualties and I must thank you. We really can't spare another soldier around here. For that, I'm gonna recommend you for a promotion."

Gwen was dumbfounded. Did she really receive a promotion for helping a man be freed from a crime that the very man giving it to her believed to be just? What was even happening.

"T-thank you! Captain...I appreciate it. I just tried my best like every other marine. I hope I can be of help with this possible new rank."

The captain smiled back at Gwen as she left the room. Stopping for a moment outside the door, all of her anxiety was let out. Her heart was beating incredibly fast and her breathing wasn't normative. She slid down the door and sat there for a bit, thinking over the day's events. Catching her breath after a minute, she got back up and walked to her room. Changing into her pajamas, she prepared for bed. Taking the den den mushi out of where it normally resided, she put it on her bed side table. Watching it, she eventually drifted off to sleep, hoping to receive a call at some point from the wanted man, Xelobo.

Gwen (Shadez) - 2 DP, 150,000 Beli

I believe that this is a good finish for Gwen, following the events of "The Blessed and The Burned." She dealt with inner turmoil, and she is lying in wait for a call from her boyfri Xelobo on the Den Den Mushi. Also, you did a good job in keeping some of the consistencies in details correct, such as the fact that Xelobo broke out of a window.
