Slipping through the cracks of the door, Winston formed his face on the other side to get a better look at what was ahead. Pure darkness. Muffled clattering of hail on the ship’s deck made up the background noise. Pulling back to EENIS, Winston relayed the information. It seemed as if they had no choice but to barge ahead without intel. The marine designated to hold the torch joined the ensign at the front. The others in the company took up an arcing position around the door, guns drawn and at the ready. Winston looked into each man’s eye to get confirmation to breach, not taking any chances at people being unaware. Once he confirmed everybody’s readiness, he kicked the door open.

An empty ball room awaited them. This was supposed to be the crew quarters, but in its place was a massive open room. Looking to the floors, it appeared as if all the walls were torn out, leaving only structural beams throughout. Darkness spread from one side to the other, obscuring any vision of what laid ahead. One of the marines let out a whistle. Echoes bounced from wall to wall. An eerie silence pressed down on the marines. In this room, not even the hail of the outside world could pierce through. Assembling into official formation, the marines started their march through the room. Every sense was open to the possibility of an attack. For once in their lives, the whole team was working in complete unison, all ready to strike at the word of any of their comrades.

Thirteen paces in and the crew were subjected to their first encounter. At first only the pitter patter of tiny feet broke the silence. This was joined by a couple more taps, and soon became a tsunami of tiny beasts flooding around the room, scratching up floorboards and climbing over top of one another. The torchlight gave little indication to what they were facing, all they knew was that they were surrounded by an ever-growing vortex of tiny beasts crawling on top of one-another. But none dared to penetrate the ring of light created by the torch. In the middle of the room the marines found solace in the beauty of fire. EENIS gathered around the light, each man forming a barrier around the torchbearer. Winston was also part of this circle, though he was much more focused on the threat at hand. “Keep your rifles up, we’ll keep moving to the far side of the room. Don’t let Barnes drop that torch.” A subtle cheer of confirmation was whispered from the men. At the very least, none of them had frozen in fear yet.

Sounds of hissing and dragging circled around the group as they continued walking. The hordes of tiny creatures only grew louder as the group made it deeper and deeper into the room. Winston took point on the operation, making sure that the group in front of them was clear before moving on. Ten more paces were taken before the torchbearer stopped. The marines at the rear had their back turns, and so they bumped into Barnes. The torch slightly rocked, but Barnes had a good hand on it. Winston turned his head back, looking at the now stopped marine. Did something happen? Was he hit by something? Are we out of luck? His thoughts raced to all different scenarios. Wait, I’m in charge right now, I have to be the one asking these questions. This operation was a change for Winston, who would much rather follow orders than give them out. Throwing aside his dread, he asked, “Barnes, why’d you stop?”

“I’m stuck sir.”

Winston’s heart froze. Twisting his body to face the center of the circle, he immediately gazed downward to see the damage. Almost the entirety of Barnes’ leg was in the floorboards, having sunk deep into a broken hole in the ground. This is bad. To the men, Winston said, “It’s not that hard to look where you’re going Barnes. Give the torch to one of the other guys.” A slight chuckle came from the rest of the men. Barnes was not as impressed. “I ain’t giving this up. I give you this and you’re just gonna leave me in the dust. I ain’t having that. I ain’t gonna die today!” Barnes began to quake, his arm with the torch ferociously shaking. “We’re in way over our heads here! We’re going to be like those chewed up bones in the last room. Why did we even come down here, we could have just stayed safe upstairs and investigated later. Who even put you in charge Winston, you’re just lucky you can’t die with your fancy powers. What about regular guys like us, huh? Why are you just throwing us to be eaten while you can just go on your merry way.” Barnes’ initial whispering turned into hysterical screams. He was panicking harder than Winston had ever seen before. I knew I shouldn't have been so casual. Maybe we should have waited until morning…

Freezing up at the sight of one of his grunts starting to panic, Winston’s lack of response started to get to the other men. They were all now turned to Barnes, but their expressions were of a different fear. The torch was now in the hands of a madman, as Barnes began to swing the torch at anyone trying to approach. “Don’t touch me, I won’t be bait so you can all leave me to die here.” Each swing of the light caused a shift in the protective ring around EENIS. Some of the men started to yelp in pain, as their heels were dug into by ravenous teeth. Within moments all except Winston had their boots torn to shreds. This caused the marines to start hurling themselves towards Barnes, all clamoring to get the only light source.

Severe infighting was on the verge of killing the group. All except Winston were now fighting over the torch, climbing on top of each other to get into the center of the light ring. Hissing and pattering fought to screech over the worried cries of the marine crew. Standing in silence, Winston was baffled on his next action. He had assumed these grunts would all stay calm and professional under his guise. But he had forgotten that they were just regular people. I’m about to get 10 more innocent people killed today, and it’s entirely my own fault. In his own head he was starting to panic. Looking down at his feet, Winston’s failure was weighing heavy on his neck. It was then that he saw his salvation.

At his feet he could see the light was not fully reaching him anymore, and so the monsters all around them were starting to come out. Large rodents with a hunger for blood. They were also chewing on his feet, but as a candy man they were merely biting off pieces of candy and running off. Some even came back for seconds. Now he had an actual solution. First I have to get the others out of here.

Gathering masses of candy syrup on his body, Winston called out to men, “Marines, I’m giving you once chance to get out. I can give these beasts the ultimate treat and distract them. Pull up Barnes and keep the torch as high as possible. Run back to the first floor and break the staircase so they can’t get back up.” His booming voice was something he had never felt before. Vigor and determination were the best classification for his warcry. Even the men noticed, as they stopped fighting and started to pull up Barnes. I lacked solid direction before, that’s what they need right now…

Once he was freed, Winston shot torrents of candy syrup all around his body, backing up to get away from the light. Through his candy he could feel the hordes of rats start to pile onto it, getting trapped in the sticky goo. He formed a sticky wall in the area that the light as around, causing the rats to pile onto it and start eating. None of the marines were being bitten into now, and they safely pulled Barnes out. At this point Winston was fully in the darkness, only protected by the floods of syrup coming from his body. The men yelled his name, but Winston just yelled back “I gave you orders men. I can deal with these rats.” No objections were raised. Was it out of selfishness? It didn’t matter. The men quickly ran from the room and closed the door behind them. Winston was left in total darkness. Only the sound of hissing and chewing filled his ears. The feeling of candy being chewed into gave him no pain, but it was still an awkward feeling. Hardening the candy on his hand, he decided to go downwards. There has to be something in the cargo hold that made all these rats. Winston crushed the floorboards below him.

In seconds, he fell into the abyss followed by hordes of hungry rats. His syrup dripped down to the floor below as he laid on top of a cargo crate. Quickly standing up, he rushed to a different crate not covered in candy. This room was completely lit up for some reason, so he had no issue finding a safe surface. Once to safety he scanned his surroundings. The walls of the hold were covered in spider webs, with shells of cocoons posted on every available surface. Some bodies of people were tied to the walls as well, only their chests were filled with former egg sacks that had burst. On the ground were more rats rushing to the dripping syrup, all hungry for something to eat. Sitting on the crate, Winston pondered his next option. At the very end of the hold he could see what was causing the grief on the ship. Sitting in a comfy cocoon was a massive spider rat hybrid, spindling its own massive web.

From behind him Winston could hear the calls of a man. “You there, if you’re still alive come with me!” He turned his head to see a middle-aged man. He wasn’t dead nor a rat, so he was considered safe. Jumping down from the high cargo crate, Winston approached him with caution. The man simply ran back to a small room, urging Winston to come inside. After coming through the door, the man slammed it shut and threw on a multitude of locks. “Sorry for that mate, I heard the crash and just knew someone came to rescue me. I'm amazed you aren't hurt. The rest of the passengers weren't so lucky, haha!”

The interior of the room was merely a table with a lantern. Some bookshelves were on the wall, all with a variety of trade charters. The man was completely overjoyed to see another face. “I am York of Salt, captain of this vessel. And I am beyond glad that you came to save me. You must be a marine, only the glorious marines could have gotten this far without dying! I got a plan to rid us of these rats!” The overjoyed man was nearly bouncing from excitement. Winston looked at him for a moment, and delivered a straight right to the jaw.
