Sylar stood in the living room of a native couple, staring at a family photo of the young couple of fair skinned winemakers and their young son benji. Benji had gone missing several months ago and now existed only in these photos of them. HE HAD BEEN HERE FOR A DAY ALREADY. HIS PARTNER HAD GONE MISSING AND HIS SUPERIOR OFFICER was nowhere to be found as well. This mission was going off the rails. Sylar had been given his first lead of a mission. it was supposed to be simple. Some tourists had gone missing a few days ago after the warm season. People didnt stay on relleechil after that because the island entered its perpetual state of frost and snow. Somehow this nature documentary crew had missed the last ship off the island and the marines had been called in to rescue them. After getting here they had splt into groups and questioned the locals. Something was definitely more amiss on this island that just some foolhardy tourists. People had been going missing in this town for months. Missing persons signs were prominently displayed all over the town square and speaking with the locals, many of them seemed to be in fear of something and behaved almost as if their was a manevolent force at work. His chosen partner, ensign Haru and he had located a secret tunnel and chased some local teens into it. The tunnels lasted for miles and he had split off from Haru to search them for clues. Eventually the cold had worn him down and exhaustion started to set in. So he made his way back to the tunnels entrance and entered this nearby house to regroup. That was 11 hours ago. WIth no word from Haru, no response on the radio from his luietant backup, and no closer to finding these missing tourists. But one step closer to figuring out the mysery of reellechill island. Finally, the backup he had requested was due to arrive. Some commander he had never heard of named Gwendolyn Aldaine and a squad of marines. Sylar turned to the couple, visibly nervous by his serious presence and tryong to keep busy around the house. Sylar ceased staring at their picture and turned to them. "Thank you for your hospitality Mr. And Mrs. Chen. The Navy will not forget your service. And my condolences for your son." He said as he nodded to them and swiftly exited the house. He would meet the commander at the docks. They had much to discuss Edited by Mr. Prince, Feb 28 2018, 12:17 AM.

Gwen had never been so far away from her home before. The marine commander assumed that if she would only ever go so far away to leave for the Marine HQ in the Grand Line for some promotion if they decided to give her one, but instead it would be her calling to be the reinforcements for some Ensigns on an island with a silly name. The call she received didn't give very much information in it besides that it was some extraction mission due to the island's random inhabitable nature. Some people had stayed behind, not local natives, and the marines were called to save these poor souls but apparently the first responders were not enough which was strange in and of itself. She was worried for the marines sent here initially which brought her to some questions. Was there something else at play here? Was this more than just the islands doing? Gwen was determined to find out. As her marine ship neared the island, she could tell immediately the temperature shift in the air. They were bound for the southern end of the island, the only place where people could live on the island and it was clear why. In the distance, the commander could already see a mountain covered in ice and snow. It was the most noticeable thing for a long time before the docks came into view much later. Dressed in her usual marine attire which an addition of a white and blue winter coat with the insignia of "Justice" still on the back, Gwen was ready to depart her ship. Along with her followed a total of 5 marines of various genders. She was to meet with an Ensign known as Sylar. Gwen liked the name but she only hoped that he was nicer than the marines she had known back in Loguetown. Once on the dock, she immediately observed that a marine was waiting for her arrival. With a smile the marine commander would approach the tattooed man and speak to him in her usual friendly manner. "Ah! Hello, I think I'm your backup. Marine Commander Gwendolyn Aldaine at your service. But you can call me Gwen. Anyway, what's the situation here? I was told this was supposed to be a pickup mission of some people that stayed on the island but then I assume you wouldn't need backup for that, so it must be more?" Gwen was really hoping to get to the bottom of the situation so that she could be of help to the people here. If the marine man decided to walk around she would follow provided he offered. The marines behind her all stood at attention as well, waiting for what the marine had to say. |

Sylar stood stoically on the banks of the shore as the ship came into view. His marine coat fluttered in the wind softly as the chilly winds of rellechill passed over him. He'd instructed the remaining crew of his own ship to stay at their posts in the town for the time being and be on alert. He preferred to have this meeting alone. Besides that, he had a very bad feeling about this whole ordeal and having soldiers in the village would make him feel more comfortable with the safety of the villagers. As the ship docked and commander stepped down Sylar did a salute and stepped forward to shake her hand. "Ah! Hello, I think I'm your backup. Marine Commander Gwendolyn Aldaine at your service. But you can call me Gwen. Anyway, what's the situation here? I was told this was supposed to be a pickup mission of some people that stayed on the island but then I assume you wouldn't need backup for that, so it must be more?" He nodded sagely in response to her inquiry. "Yes Commander gwen." Sylar began to lead the group to the town as the older greeting man had done for them before. His pace was noticeably quicked. He didn't want to waste a moment. He began to explain the situation to her. "I'll run you through the entire sequence of events. We arrived here at 0900 hours yesterday. Upon arriving we set up camp in the town square while commandeering a few houses to place supplies in as well. Lieutenant something was supposed to take charge of the BOA as he was sent to oversee me on this mission. I suspect that i am up for promotion and the division captain gave me this mission as a test run. I paired our small crew off and sent everyone we could afford out into the forests surrounding the town to begin the search. From the information we could gather from the townsfolk they last saw the tourists headed towards the peak of the largest mountain on the isle. However i have reason to believe they may have ended up on the southern hemisphere of the island. You see this is where the unusual part of the search came in, and what required your backup. This town has had a rash of missing people for months now that apparently has been largely ignored by the WG at large. Myself and my partner, Ensign Haru located a series of secret tunnels on the edge of town that went for miles. Unfortunately, during the search of this tunnel, we became separated and i haven't been able to reach her since. THis was not an isolated incident. Several of my assigned crew for this mission have gone MIA, including the lieutenant sent to oversee me. Which doesn't make sense, as he was supposed to be square in the center of town, manning den den mushi communication between groups. Ma'am, i have reason to believe nefarious forces are at work on this island. And with your help, i'd like to get to the bottom of this." Sylar completed his mission briefing by staring directly into the eyes of Gwen, his determination and fire for justice burning behind his own. The group had reached the center of the town as the walk was not long whatsoever. The overbearing wind was picking up now as the sun began to set on rellechill for the second time since his arrival. I just do what I do

The first thing Gwen noticed was that this man had a large amount of tattoos and they were interestingly placed around his body. She also noted that this marine appeared to be a very serious type of person, but still willing to use the shortened version of her name that she had provided him. Not being able to get a good read of his character, the young marine commander decided that she would listen closely to everything he had to say. Sylar spoke with truth and respect for his commander with undertones of passion for the mission at hand. It truly looked as though he wanted to do everything he could to bring these people back safely. Gwen was happy that she had met a dedicated marine out here, and it brought a smile to her face. He did speak curiously about the World Government, and the notion that they would be ignoring the issue didn't strike Gwen as being entirely possible. It was probably true that they were too busy for some search and rescue like this, but they would flat out ignore people in help, would they? The young marine girl pondered this momentarily before turning to her subordinates behind her and speaking up using her commander voice she learned from Wash. "Alright, you heard him. We have missing civilians on this island as well as some marines. I want everyone to spread out and ask the townspeople everything they know and if they saw anything suspicious. Turning back to her partner for this task, Gwen gave another smile and a nod. "Let me know what the game plan is for this search and rescue. If this is in fact a test of your abilities we better not fail and risk the lives of these people or your promotion. I'll let you make the decisions, just think of me as a resource." Gwen rarely liked to pull rank especially when this mission also determined a promotion for someone. The young marine would try to be as helpful as possible. |

Sylar only nodded in response as the young female commander sent her people off to speak with the townspeople once more. In truth he was uncomfortable with the sceanrio. He'd never been in command while out in the field and certainly not in a scenario like this were peoples lives were directly at stake. Sylar hated to admit it to himself, but he was somewhat relieved that gwen, that was still werid for him, to refer to a superior on a first name basis but he didnt have time to feel weird about that now, had left him in command. The clock was ticking on any of those people who might be lost in the forest. The rumors of the weather on rellechill did not exaggerate. It was going to dip below freezing very soon and survival for all but the toughest of individuals would be neigh impossible. He felt responsible for the mess that was happening here and while he would accept if she had come in and taken charge, leaving him in command allowed him to rectify his mistake. However much he could. Alright. WIth these added forces it shouldnt be too hard for those of us who remain to scan the entire forest headed up to the peak within a day or so. It wouldnt be pretty, or comfortable, but it could be done. he pointed the new arrivals towards the communication relay which was now manned by another ensign and led Gwen to the entrance of the tunnel behind the storefront. He'd had the store owners ward it off with crimescene tape a few hours ago and it sat there, staring back at him with a dark, evil grin of an abyss. "Ensign Haru and i. We followed a couple of kids down here. I believe that these tunnels lead somewhere with answers. The kids may have just been sneaking around, but i know they didn't dig these. And the townsfolk have so far been quiet about them. Someone...or something built them. i'm going back in. And we'll get to the bottom of this." Sylar had his heavier sweater and puple scar on under his marine coat now and had a high powered flashlight. As well as his den den clutched at the ready. Finally stopping to get a nod of approval from her before heading back down into the hole, he all at once noticed her appearance. The commander appeared as young, if not younger than himself. Her features were petite, and her attire was entirely unusual for navy personall. No wonder she wanted me to call her by her first name. She must be one of those new school type of captains. I'll just have to assume she can handle herself physically, afterall she doesnt look like much. He admitted to himself as he pulled his scarf up over his mouth, obscuring the slight frown on his face at this realization about the person sent as his backup. It seemed like the man she was reinforcing agreed with her move to have her men assess exactly what the townspeople knew, but in truth she did it mainly to save them. She knew the island had a freezing problem, and while Gwen had a natural resistance to temperature because of her fruit, she knew the others didn't. If she had the full knowledge this man did of the island and the experiences so far, she might've asked him to stay behind as well. Even if she did, however, Gwen knew that this man probably wasn't the type to be left standing around while others did his work for him. Hopefully this man was able to take care of himself should anything happen to the both of them. Going through the gift shop like store and out the back, the two reached the back where a giant black hole seemed carved into the wall. It was dark and eerie, not to mention many people were missing so it wouldn't be unusual to hearing wailing or yelling, despite how creepy it would be all the same. It was a time like this that Gwen felt dumb for not bringing a standard issue flashlight with her, but how was she to know that they would need it for a cave? Luckily after the man explained that he was suspicious of the tunnel and that they would be going in, he brought out his flashlight to illuminate the area. With a much better view, Gwen saw slightly into the inside of the cave which looked pretty icy, and what wasn't ice was still damp. The young marine commander nodded at the ensign and noticed a frown on his face. Unsure of what this meant, Gwen decided to ask. "Is everything alright? Are you worried about what is in here? If you're worried about me I appreciate it, but I can handle myself if anything goes wrong. I'm moreso worried for you, I would be crushed if the cave collapsed in on the two of us. Haha, get it? Crushed?" Gwen's attempt to bring levity to the situation embarrassed her, but hopefully it calmed her guide. She didn't want the ensign to worry about the situation and let him know that she would have his back if things went wrong. As they walked through the entrance to the cave, the young commander tried to bring up some conversation to ease the tension. "Are you Sylar, by the way? I was told I was reinforcing an ensign by that name but I just assumed it was you because of the way you took charge, which by the way was nicely done. I think if we do this all right that promotion will be as good as yours!" Edited by RyanG, Mar 2 2018, 12:18 PM.

Stepping back into the tunnel felt wrong. A sense of dread fell over the young marine as he stepped into the frigid, icy walls. But he pushed those feelings down into the pit of his soul as his obligation and pride pushed him forward. The tunnel was cylindrical, and the light from the torch refracted off the surface. This tunnel was either made entirely of ice, or was coated in a thick layer of it. Either way, it was pure white and each time he swung the torch to a different side the light reflected like a mirror, shining back into Sylars face. They were large enough to fit the 6'4 man without trouble but despite the actual size of the tunnel being wide enough for him, he didn't feel comfortable walking. Sylar then heard Gwen talking from behind him. He did his best to not respond vicerably to her terrible terrible joke and simply nodded in retaliation. His mind was laser set on this mission and he wasn't much for jokes anyway. He appreciated her attempt at assuring him that should was not as weak as she looked. But her found that hard to believe regardless. Then she asked him if his name was Sylar. He stopped for a moment and turned to her. "Oh course, apologies for not properly introducing myself earlier. I am indeed Sylar. Ensign Sylar peace. I only assumed the office had given you a picture or description of me so you were already certain of that fact. Normally i would not be so rude. Though of course, these are not normal circumstances." Just then, Sylar heard a woman's shriek come echoing down the tunnel, reverberating against the walls and picking up strength as it did so. He nearly had to cover his ears. But he didn't waste a moment, dashing forward as fast as his legs could take him towards the source of the scream. It could be Haru afterall. Sylar didn't consciously think this at the time, but this would be a chance for Gwen to show him her physical skills. If she could keep up with him at top speed, it would speak to her prowess. |

It wasn't until the two actually went inside the frozen cave that Gwen felt any kind of worried. Generally her anxiety was saved just for her marine comrades but in this case the small little girl that was afraid of monsters wanted to come out in the marine commander. Suppressing that emotion with a calm shaky exhale, Gwen put on her signature smile to move forward. Looking at the walls with awe at how they reflected the flashlight, the young marine commander imagined herself in a better place, like a carnival fun house with all the mirrors on the walls. Picturing this was nice, but the concentration was snapped when Sylar spoke about his identity. "No, don't worry about it. I'm sure the main thing that's been on your mind is how to save these people, not introductions." With a smile, she continued to walk with the ensign. A few moments of silence was all it took to make the marine girl want to start asking general questions about her partner when all of the thought was cut short but the shrill scream of a woman resounding throughout the cave walls. Gwen had taken off running without a thought, surprised that her counterpart decided to do the same. It was neck and neck for a couple of seconds before the ensign pulled ahead. Running as quickly as she could on the frozen floor, she was only a few seconds behind when they reached the source of the scream. The commander didn't have any time to be surprised that the ensign could outrun her due to the kneeling bloody woman. Her arm was opened up in a weird way, almost surgical, and was soaked in blood due to the open wound. Quickly responding with a medical pack and gauze, as well as some thread and needles, Gwen tried her best to sew up the arm before wrapping it all in the medical cloth. Medical training wasn't her best, but as a child she briefly wanted to be a doctor before a marine and studied up on similar medical practices. The brown haired woman winced at every needle stroke, but seemed to be not too affected. Gwen chalked it up as lack of feeling in the arm due to the damage. Once her arm was sufficiently wrapped, Gwen cut the gauze off and tied it off so it wouldn't slip off. Standing back up to the side of her marine counterpart, she looked to the now standing as well woman. Visibly shaken, the woman was muttering incoherently for a few moments before Gwen tried to calm her down. "It's okay, It's okay, me and my partner are here now-" The marine commander was cut off by the incessant yelling of the bandaged woman. "HE'S TAKEN US. CUT US UP WE AREN'T SAFE ON THIS ISLAND. PLEASE, RESCUE EVERYONE." Gwen frowned with sympathy for a moment before regaining her confidence. "Don't worry ma'am, we will stop whoever is behind this." The young marine commander would have asked more details but she didn't want to overload the poor woman or remind her of whatever hell she just escaped from. If Sylar had questions she would wait for him, but after he would be done she would speak with a solid tone. "Lets press on." |

As the two reached the waling woman Gwen knelt down next to her and began tending to her wounds before Sylar knew what was happening. She must have more first aid experience than myself. He thought as he allowed her to do the stitching she was working on. Yeah. That sounds about right. He swung his flashlight around wildly looking for the source of her injuries before realizing he was leaving them without light. "I'll leave this here with you. I'm going to go scout up ahead and make sure nothing is watching us." He informed Gwen as he sat the light down between the two woman, pointed towards so the light reflected down on them. He disappeared into the darkness, groping along the walls to keep his orientation as he did so. Tripping a few times he caught himself and continued to push forward. "Dammit how far do these tunnels go!?" Suddenly he crashed into another object. Instinctively he grabbed it and lifted it into the air, fist raised. "Who are you! Talk!" He barked at the object ever so briefly before he swung at it. "Stop!" Came the voice of teen girl. His fist stopped an inch from her nose as his eyes adjusted to the darkness. He dropped her to the ground with a thug and took a moment to compose himself. He had very nearly smashed that girls face in. He needed to get a grip and allow the adrenaline to wear off. "Please don't hurt me. I-i didn't do anything! Brett said these tunnels were just some animals house. I don't know anything about the screaming lady!" She began babbling as he knelt down beside her. Sylar put on his friendlist smile even in the darkness and spoke with a level tone. "I apologise for being rough with you before. I didn't know if you were an animal or not. I couldn't see you int he darkness. do you have a light with you?" "N-no. I had one b-but i dropped it when i heard that scream and i ran. what happened? Is somebody hurt?" Sylar nodded. So this is the girl he had seen sneaking into the tunnel before. and Brett must be the boy she was with at that time. "Someone is hurt. That was the sound you heard before. But my name is Mr. Peace. I'm an Ensign with the Marines. My partner is with the woman who made that noise and shes going to be fine. Now i need you to do something to help me. I saw you and Brett come down here yesterday. That's how i found this place. I need you to tell me everything you know about these tunnels, what you're doing down here, and how long you've been coming here. He eagerly anticipated her response. This was the break in the case they'd been searching for. "I don't know where the tunnels came from. Brett just brought me down here to make out sometimes. It's only been a couple of weeks since he found them i think." She said sheepishly as he could more feel than see her squirming with her words. Kids "Alright that's very good... i'm sorry what is your name?" "It's Aida." "Alright Aida. What you've told me so far is good. And i promise you, neither you nor brett are in any trouble. Now this next question i have to ask you is the most important one fo all. Do you know where these tunnels lead, and can you take me to the other end of it? You know, the opposite of where we came in?" It happened so fast he didn't realize she had moved. One second she was there and the next she was replace with darkness. "Hello?" Sylar called out fruitlessly to the emptiness, waving his hands around to feel her presence where she once was. A muffled help escaped through the echos as he realized she was moving away from him. And fast. "GWEN, WE'VE GOT TO MOVE! COME TO MY VOICE, NOW!" He commanded as he rose to his feet and took off down the tunnel, damning his balance and saying screw it to the darkness. He was not gonna lose her. Not like he lost Haru, not like he lost Ryota. Not this time. Her voice became fainter and fainter as he rushed through the tunnel, at one point crashing into a hanging stalactite and completely wrecking his left shoulder. He knew something was seriously wrong with it but he didn't have time to worry about that now. The darkness felt everlasting and he couldn't hear much else than the faint voice in front of him and his own footsteps echoing along the wall. He kept calling back to Gwen as often as he could spare the breath, letting her know where he was. Hoping she could follow his voice. Finally, he came to a dead end. A solid wall of ice. No more voice to follow. I- i don't understand where did? He wondered as he hunched over, catching his breath as he peered around in the dark. No longer being able to track what was going on in front of him, he turned around to see if Gwen was nearby. "GWEN!" He called out into the bitter silence Edited by Mr. Prince, Mar 6 2018, 02:22 AM.

Gwen didn't have time to say that the two should move on before her marine partner was already gone, taken off making sure nobody was watching them somehow. It didn't make much sense to the young commander but at the same time the idea of someone viewing them like this in a dark cave was actually frightening. She was glad that her ensign wasn't weak willed at the very least. Leaving the flashlight behind, the man threw himself into the abyss that was the rest of the cave. It was a bit bold, maybe too much, but Gwen respected it. Putting the finishing touches on the woman's arm, she pointed to the area where they had come from which should have been the exit. "Down that way, we came from there so that should be the way out. The townsfolk are out there as well as some marines and they should be able to take care of you." The woman looked scared, biting her lip, but nodded and headed out in that direction. The marine girl smiled at her job well done, and hoped that her arm would be able to make a full recovery. Thinking back to her ensign, she did hear some noises down the tunnel in the direction that Sylar had gone. Grabbing the flashlight that they no doubt needed in this darkness, she continued on through the way Sylar did. Getting closer, she noticed the voices did sound closer, and she even thought she heard her own name being called. Fumbling to move quicker down the cave, Gwen lost her footing and fell on her side, hitting a small rock that jutted out at a weird angle. It hurt, especially since she didn't turn to soot quickly enough, so the girl just laid there in pain as the flashlight had broken slipping out of her hand as she fell. "Oh god that hurt so bad. Ooooo... The girl moaned as she held her side. She wasn't used to being hit so often so her constitution wasn't so high. I need to get better with this intangibility and getting hit in case that happens, I feel so weak. Gwen hated feeling weak since that is what caused people to look down on her. She wondered if Sylar would be in the same amount of pain and crawled to her feet in that moment. She couldn't be weak, especially right now when people needed her. Feeling her way along the wall, she took several turns along the way but eventually found a light at the end of the tunnel. Well, it was just less darkness than the advanced darkness she was in before. With a goal in mind, Gwen continued at her slow pace, trying not to hit any other dumb rocks along the way. Once she had reached the end, the moon had reflected the nighttime lights well, but it still wasn't ideal. The moon? How long were we in there? Looking around, the marine girl tried to spot Sylar but couldn't see a soul anywhere she looked. What did come to vision almost immediately were some buildings ahead of her covered in snow and ice. Quickly she noticed a light on in one of the buildings that seemed to be carved out of its surrounding. Wanting to make her way to the building as quick as she could, the marine girl would notice one big problem. She was up about a hundred feet on a cliff overlooking the entire town. |

No answer. Sylar slumped to his knees as he strained to hear a reply through the darkness. He had been calling to Gwen with no response for several minutes now. He could go back into the void looking for her, but his marine training knawed at that idea with logic. This is a solid end point, u KNOW u came directly here. Once he started wandering back he could get lost and completely be trapped in these tunnels. "Well, i guess she can't hear me. Either she's gone too far in another direction, or there is something down here purposely stopping her from hearing me." He spoke out loud to himself, mostly to hear another voice. That simulation of interaction would help him stay logical rather than retreating into his own head and letting his imagination run wild. The adrenaline was wearing off also and his shoulder began to feel the force of that impact. Not to mention the bitter cold around him. He was dressed warm to be sure, but not quite warm enough to offset being inside one giant freezer. He turned to the wall behind him, the looming, ominous wall of blackness. There was imply no way he had been mistaken. hE WAS HOT ON THE TRAIL OF Aida AS SHE MOVED THROUGH THE TUNNELS BY WHATEVER HAD GRABBED HER. And HE DEFINITELY HEARD HER VOICE COMING TILL THIS EXACT POINT. "Godammit!" He punched the wall in frustration. This didn't make any sense. It was...Impossible The realization struck him as he pulled his fist back and shook it slightly due to the pain. "Impossible." Sylar remembered something his mother had told him when he was younger. They had gone to see a magic show, as was her custom, and he said that a certain trick was impossible. "A good magician can make impossible seem reality..." He mouthed to himself as he began frantically running his hands along the wall. This wall seems impossible, but it's not impossible for it to have popped up out of nowhere. There's a trick to it. Just like magic. After a minute of searching he found nothing, no switch, no indent. Nothing to lead him to believe the wall was trigger by some sort of mechanism. But... there was something. The texture. The wall is still just as dry as it was when i first touched it. And i've been rubbing all over it for a solid minute, "the rest of this cave is full of slick, wet ice. Except for this. This ice isn't melting. Because..." Sylar took a step back and threw a punch with all his might into the wall. Then another, then another. He summoned his shadow sleeve for a bit of protection for his hand and let loose with his final, most powerful punch. The wall came crashing outwards, spilling across the snowy landscape as Sylar stepped through. "It's a false wall. Magic trick." He covered his eyes with his forearm as his tattoo's returned to their normal resting position on his arm. The night was dark but compared to the blackness of that cave, it was midday. The light of the moon, piercing a powerful cut through the night. He looked around for any sign of life, of Aida as he tried to gain his bearings. Until his eyes settled on a collection of cabins down the slop from him. It appeared their lights were on. "Ok Mr. Peace. Lets do this!" Edited by Mr. Prince, Mar 9 2018, 01:01 AM.
