Scouting doesn't tell you whether a target's troops are hidden or not. Attacks do.

Preparation
Get your muster field and great hall to level 8 or so.

Wagon Scouting
1) Find 8 targets and send 1 wagon to each of them. Wagons are fast and cheap.
2) If your wagon comes back full, bookmark it. Send in a couple thousand troops and a few hundred wagons.
2a) I name my bookmarks according to the resources they provide. So if I get food, wood, stone, and ore, I bookmark it as FWSO. This way if I need a particular resource later, I know where to get it.
2b) If you get a megaton of stuff from a target, I put OMG (Oh My God) after the GFWSO to remind me this player is an awesome farm to visit daily.
3) If your wagon dies, send in a scout to see if it is worth losing troops to take their resources.

Target Selection
1) Unless we are at war, don't pick targets that are in the top 20 alliances.
2) Don't pick a target more than twice your might, unless you want all your wilds flipped.
3) Try to avoid targets longer than 4 minutes away (unless they have low/0 might and no alliances).

Bubble Popping
1) New players keep their protection bubble beyond the first few days if they don't log in.
2) You can get around this by using your muster field to March Troops to the destination.
3) Note that after you make a successful attack this way, the bubble pops and can be attacked normally.

Other Tips
1) Note that T1 is slower than T3, so if you want to attack fast, escort your wagons with T3's or T2's.
2) Use your lowest level hero when wagon scouting. This saves your highest level hero for attacking (minimizing possible losses).

Happy hunting!
