New Motorcycle Law in Virginia As of July 1st 2012 motorcyclists can now ride side by side in Virginia. Last Feb. Gov. Bob McDonnell signed House Bill 97, sponsored by Delegate Tony Wilt of Harrisonburg, and supported by the VA Motorcycles Dealers Association, to permit motorcyclists to ride two abreast in a single lane of traffic in the state of Virginia. Previously, if two riders pulled abreast even stopped at a traffic light, they could have both been charged with reckless driving. That will no longer be the case. Virginia becomes the 49th state to allow two abreast riding. The new law applies only to two-wheel motorcycles, not trikes, Can-ams, etc. If you happen to visit Vermont, it is the last state where riding abreast is not legal. |
