NOTE: Please read this WARNING before beginning any work. Yamaha Road Star Silverado S Oil Cooler Install Installed back in 2012 Finally got around to installing the oil cooler on my R* a few weeks ago. As everyone knows the R* does not have a issue of running hot - unless maybe sitting in traffic for extended periods of time. I installed not just because I like them, but I believe in their cooling abilities on those hot summer days. I usually don't ride on cold days but if I did I would just pop a cover over the cooler. I started out with the JAGG 4800 oil filter adapter w/o thermostat and the DBI Cooler, but after a week or so, ended up switching out with the JAGG 1200 Slimline cooler. The DBI Cooler with temp guage is really nice and my favorite, but the threaded connectors on the cooler had a minor leak. I removed it and will mess around with the DBI connectors and see if I can repair. If so I will reinstall. So for now I am running with the Slimline. I'm sure there are many ways to install a oil cooler. This is how I did it and here is the basic rundown: Here is the DBI Oil Cooler I first installed: ![]() This is both sides of the JAGG 4800 Oil Filter Adapter. This just installs between the oil filter housing and engine. The "O" rings are always installed towards the engine: ![]() ![]() Drain oil and remove oil filter: ![]() Remove the original oil filter plate adapter by unscrewing the four hex head bolts. Entire unit with the two "O" rings should come off in one piece: ![]() After removing, clean plate adapter completely. Remove the "O" rings and check for damage. Reinstall "O" rings. I did put a light film of oil on the "O" rings before install: ![]() Clean base on engine before installing adapter and filter adapter plate: ![]() The JAGG adapter will attach and be installed behind the oil filter plate adapter using the longer hex screws included in the kit by JAGG: ![]() Follow the directions that came with the JAGG adapter when reinstalling the oil filter plate adapter and JAGG adapter. The JAGG adapter will be sandwiched between the plate adapter and engine. Use blue thread lock & torque to required specs by Yamaha:

Prepare the cooler by removing the chrome outer shield and select the connectors you will use:![]() Apply thread sealant to threads and tighten down: ![]() Select the correct size chrome (Cooler to Frame) adapter and snap in place on the front frame down-tube. Install both chrome cooler halves around the mount adapter. Do not tighten at this time: ![]() ![]() Re-attach chrome cover over cooler base then slide entire cooler down between mount. Center cooler in mount and tighten down mounting clamp making sure you have clearance on all sides. Use blue thread lock: ![]() ![]() The DBI kit did not come with the oil hose. I picked up 3 foot from my local parts store along with the hose clamps. Measure twice and cut oil line. Attach top & bottom hoses to oil cooler using hose clamps. Dosen't matter which hose goes to which connector on the cooler. Tighten but do not over tighten clamps. At this point the installation of the Adapter and Cooler is complete. Install oil filter, drain plugs, and add oil. While I was at it I added the Magnetic Gold Plugs:

If you spilled any oil while draining or refilling the engine clean it up. Double check that all bolts, clamps, and oil filter are tight. Start engine and check for leaks. Take for a good 20 - 25 mile test ride. Re-check all connections for leaks. I went for a 22 mile test ride and returned with a oil temp of 185 degrees: ![]() This is what the oil cooler looks like after installation. Job well done: ![]() NOTE: After another 25-50 miles I would recheck all clamps and re-tighten if necessary. FWIW: I like this oil cooler because of the sharp chrome finish and oil temp gauge. You cannot see the gauge while riding down the road. When you stop you can look over at it without getting off bike. Edited by tibadoe, May 4 2018, 05:18 PM.
