Hedge Maze

Ready to get lost in the thick of a forest of plants? No? Oh....Well, that's unfortunate, because our Daring Protagonist and Lovely Swordsman (heh. get it.) has been tossed into what seems to be a man-made hedge maze....or...what's left of one. The likely once popular attraction has seen better days, twigs and brush now littering the ground, and the occasional tree, large and small, having grown on the path. People have heard whispers from older students about encountering Tangrowths and Deerling here, even the occasional Sawsbuck, but those are but rumors...right?

Just hope you've got something sharp. You might need to Indiana Jones through some hedges...Pray it's not an angry deer's antlers!

Your GM is Coons. He will be RPing Mook(low level) Grimm without rolls to familiarize the team with working with a GM until your official battle. The combat system will not be implemented in these first two threads. Please begin by RPing out your landing strategy!

Have fun, and happy landing!

Having spent most of orientation day in hiding, Natsuki found the cliffs the launchpads were located on to be suffocatingly wide open. After Sycamore gave his speech and Diantha gave instructions, Natsuki readied his stance on the platform, his heart thudding painfully in his chest. He knew what he had to do...he was just worried about having to execute it.

It was faint at first, but the sounds of the mechanisms launching his fellow students steadily got louder and louder, people closer and closer him getting launched. He made the mistake of glancing to the side, to see someone only a few people away from him getting launched.

He began to anxiously count the clicks until he, too, was gone.

3...

2...

1...

He didn't get the chance to feel the platform underneath him launch him, let alone leave his feet. One moment he was standing, the next, he had been rudely hurled into the air and was tumbling. Shit, shit...! After a brief struggle that included awkwardly flapping his limbs, he managed to right himself, feeling his ascent slow to a stop. Now, came the hard part.

As he fell towards the earth, he took out his scimitars, blood bounding through his body as he searched for the spot he was going to land in. God, did he hope there wasn't any strong light where he was going to land. There! His eyes widened, spotting the shady area it seemed he was going to land in. Oh, thank Arceus. He drew his blades back to nervously and precisely cut his way through thin branches so he could make it to ground. One wrong move, one missed branch, and a large portion of his aura would be gone. He knew this, and focused as hard as he could on the task at hand.

It didn't take very long at all for him to get past the gnarled tree branches. Just before he hit the ground, he drew his body as straight as he could and crossed his arms in front of his chest, sinking right into the land and disappearing without a trace.

When he opened his eyes, he was floating through pitch darkness. He shakily exhaled the breath he'd been holding, and tilted his head back as he let himself go limp. He'd made it. Looking upwards, he saw a familiar sight - light, weakly streaming through windows back to the world of light. Already, he saw at least one Grimm amongst the greenery, and he shivered at the thought of having to fight.

....Well, he couldn't hide here forever.

He sighed, sheathed his scimitars, and began to 'swim,' keeping a close eye on the portals above.

It was go time. Or so Cassidy told herself repeatedly that morning when she was preparing. The speed at which she had been ushered didn't give her a chance to meet up with either Marianne or Irma (despite waking up next to the sheep), and she soon found herself listening to a speech about instructions or something. She just had to land safely, find a partner, kill some grimm, take a relic, and not die, right? It was supposed to be easy!

It had to be easy.

This is where everything started.

Cassidy looked towards her left and her right, rows and rows of unfamiliar faces, although she did see the bird from yesterday. Sabine, she said her name was? Non-optimal partner, Cassidy was going the other way. She knew her landing strategy in and out, and it involved several hopefully sucessful transfers of momentum, and the sickest combat roll ever pulled by a student of Lumiose Academy.

It was indeed, go time. Cassidy took a ready stance, somewhat like a sprinter.

The launchpad rocketed her into the air at a nearly unfathomable speed, but she had angled herself in such a manner that she went much further forward than she had intended to. That could be remedied.

Step 1, first barrier, orientated at an angle that would send her to the ground. Cassidy concentrated before rotating her body, creating a reflective barrier at her feet that immdiately shot her down to the ground, conserving velocity. That was bad, but this entire situation was life or death and damn she was going to live. She had people to save!

Step 2, second barrier, placed at another angle to send her directly parallel to the ground. She had managed to orientate herself in the air so she dove through a clearing in the trees at nearly terminal velocity, before rotating around and creating another reflective surface angular to the ground. She bounced off of the next one and began moving parallel to the ground at once again, nearly terminal velocity.

If she fucked up step three, she was toast. She was quickly approaching the ground and if she didn't tuck now she'd skid on her stomach and burn herself. She carefully engaged her aura, using a third reflective surface to send her spinning along the ground at a high velocity. The entire ordeal was jarring and painful, but she then realized she didn't have a way to stop. She was heading to a large hedge, but she couldn't tell.

She just hope that whatever she ran into was soft.

Natsuki drifted through the shadows, carefully observing his surroundings. It...seemed that he was currently in some sort of...abandoned man-made hedge maze? People had tried to do things in this godforsaken forest....he shifted uncomfortably, and drifted on.

After only a few moments, an out-of-place sound caught his ear. It was muffled, but in the silence of the shadows, it might as well have been clear as day. He looked up, trying to peer through the portals to find the source. If it was a Grimm, then he'd just leave, no big deal. Closer inspection....revealed it to be...a person tumbling across the ground?

Huh. They were going very fast.

Closer inspection revealed that she was a girl.

All that rolling looked really painful.

............Hm, it looked like she wasn't going to stop.

........................................................He was going to have to go catch her, wasn't he.

He sighed and grimaced, not looking forward to getting crashed into, but not willing to just risk letting a fellow student roll right into some Grimm's throat. With a speed one wouldn't expect from him considering how lazily he usually drifted through the darkness, he zipped through the shadows with ease, making a beeline for the girl. He went through the portal headfirst, as he usually did, darkness rapidly melting off of him as he pulled himself into the real world again. He opened up his less-than-human arms, took a stance, and readied himself to catch her.

Catching her was just about as painful as he expected it to be, and as predicted, he didn't manage to stay on his feet for long. He wrapped his arms around her tightly as they were both sent careening through the old hedge, crashing and tumbling on the ground on the other side as their momentum slowed. In the end, a dazed Natsuki found himself being crushed under the girl's weight, and he was sure there was a number of loose dead nature now attached to his arms and stuck in his hair, to say the least. Everything was already sore. Regret. So much regret.

....He hoped she was at least okay.

Cassidy was barelling through the air making peace with her fragile life when she crashed into something... Soft? That was soft. And then suddenly there were bushes and trees her eyes were closed and she had no idea what was going on. She finally stopped moving and found herself sitting on something soft. She was relatively unharmed, aside from some scratches on her back.

She then felt what was under her and it was... Most definitely a boy. Where did he come from? Cassidy quickly got up off of the boy realizing the position they were in could be seen as rather awkward. She took stock of him, knowing that he was likely injured. His arms stood out to her, as they weren't even human. Or anything resembling. She cocked an eyebrow before offering a hand to help him up.

"Thanks for catching me! It means I didn't have to execute the sickest combat roll in existence... But it also means I'm alive." She dusted herself off before realizing that this kid, was not Marianne. Or Irma. No matter, he was at least cute. "Cassidy. We're partners now, right?"

Natsuki let out a small groan as the girl got off him, relieving him of some of his current suffering. He slowly propped himself up on his 'elbows' as she began to talk, thanking him for his deed. "No problem..." he murmured, his mask hiding the slight frown on his face. Hm. Already talking and trying to crack jokes. At least she was polite, offering a hand to help him up. He didn't take it.

He stood up by himself as she introduced herself, carefully picking a leaf from his arm. His eyes darted to look at her in the eyes at the mention of 'partners,' flickering down to examine her before looking back and studying his face.

"...........I suppose," he said eventually, and went back to picking debris from his arms. It may have seemed like he was being rude and simply choosing not to introduce himself, but in truth it was the opposite.

He was...actually entirely not sure which name he should introduce himself by. Normally, he'd introduce himself by his last name: Kimura. But, considering that this girl was going to be his partner....it would probably be better if he just introduced himself by his first name by default, right? Then, she wouldn't have the possibility of being insulted that he didn't apparently trust her enough at the beginning to tell her his first name, and therefore no chance of an awkward rift between them over it.

Aaaaaand whoops there went his opportunity too much time had passed for him to properly introduce himself without it being stupidly awkward shit.

Well he certainly was a quiet one. But he did catch her, so h had some sense of justice. Or morals. Or something like that. Cassidy was still hazy from the adrenaline and incapable of thinking of words properly.

She pointed to a direction in the hedgemaze, her gaze resolute, "We're gonna head that way. If anything, I think the relic site is that way." Cassidy grinned, before realizing that this kid, her new partner, would question why that way.

"If you're wondering why, its because the air comming from that way smells different. Its not as musty over there." She hoped that sufficed before starting off in a direction in the hedge maze, one pistol drawn.

"A name would be really nice though. We're gonna be working together for the next four years! Lighten up a little, I promise I don't bite!"

...Well, he actually didn't think to question her. It was obvious from the antennae, which he noticed belatedly once his attention was no longer focused on the things stuck in his arms and hair, that she was a faunus. If there was anything he knew, it was that some Faunus had the weirdest abilities, especially the ones modeled after more...animate Pokemon.

Not as musty, though? Couldn't that just mean there's an open area of the forest...? he wondered, following her regardless and drawing out his weapons as well. He didn't have any better ideas as to where their goal was, he wasn't about to blindly lead them somewhere.

He lowered his head at her mention of a name, trying to conceal his blush, even though his mask already did a good job of that. Fuck.

".....Natsu..ki...." he murmured at last. "It's nice to meet you....Cassidy-san." Welp. There it was. His given name, and she probably didn't even care that it was his first and not his last but whatever.

"......If you would like...I can scout the area up ahead," he offered, gently waving a scarf-arm in front of them (or him, rather, as he was still behind Cassidy).

"It's nice to meet you meet you Natsuki!" She spoke cheerfully, turning to look at him.

Scout the area up ahead? Now that was an idea if she had ever heard one. She didn't particularly fancy the idea of potentially injuring her new teammate, but she wasn't sure where he even came from. She didn't sense him while rolling through the air, and he didn't seem to carry much presence naturally. But he was offering to scout.

"Uhm. Sure. Go ahead." Cassidy said, carefully loading a poison type dust cartridge into her gun. She set the loaded one in her holster and loaded the other one, drawing both. She wasn't sure how he was going to scout, but she figured she'd leave it to him. Cassidy slowed her pace moving forward, both guns drawn. She smelled the air quietly, taking in the air. It was getting unusually grassy and she smelled... Darkness? Was that darkness?

"Natsuki? Be careful!" She turned around to look at the boy again, and... He wasn't there. Nor was he anywhere. She couldn't sense his presence. Had he abandoned her? That couldn't be right, he said he was going to go scout.

"... Natsuki?" She called, bits of discomfort slipping into her voice, "Natsuki? Where'd you go??"

Of what Natsuki could see, there was not much more than broken walls of hedges, trees , and the occasional clump of black bushes that one could have sworn had disgustingly red trunks...did one just move?

The maze itself, however, seemed quiet. There had been some moving in the maze, mostly concentrated on what could be considered either side of one path carved from hedges a decently wide berth. Luckily for our intrepid duo, it seemed to lead to some kind of exit to the shrubbery maze! Our dearest swordsman would be able to return to his partner with good news of the path ahead.
