Vertical Hell

Should you be expecting a flat landing surface, your plans may have suddenly gone awry! Almost straight up and down, cliff faces, hobbled trees and rocky outcroppings paint the geologically absurd scene that can only be described as a cliff-climber's heaven.

Despite the strange terrain, Geodude, Pidgey, and Drillbur Grimm still prowl this area - even if the stiff, thin breeze and utter silence says otherwise.

OOC: The GM for this thread is Xavier. GM's will RP mook (weak) Grimm during combat, to get players used to working with a GM. The combat system will not be used for these first two threads. Please begin by RPing your landing strategy!

Kevin had remained attentive throughout Sycamore and Diantha's explanation of the ordeals ahead, and he considered himself ready for them. The first step seemed easy enough; He already had water, rock, psychic, and fire dust loaded in Ebony Reaper, all of which would be useful for aerial maneuvering. Landing was no concern for Kevin. After he landed… Well, he'd have to wing it and hope he ran into someone who wouldn't completely clash with him. His thoughts had to be cut short, however, as he noticed that the person only two slots away from him had just been fired into the sky. Kevin nodded to himself, running a finger over the slot in his scythe that contained a cut rock dust crystal, before he himself was launched away.

Kevin remained calm while he was in the air; aerial maneuvers were nothing new to him, after all. As he reached the peak of the launch, he created a rock glyph and hopped off of it, effectively negating any vertical velocity, now just leaving him with horizontal velocity which he'd just have to wait on to peter out. After a bit longer of jumping along his makeshift path in the sky, Kevin finally managed to come to a stop on one of his glyphs. He took a moment to get his bearings, before looking down and, figuring directly below him was as good a place as ever, jumped from his rock glyph, dissolving it, before creating two psychic glyphs: One directly below him, and one not too far from the ground. The result was Kevin falling through the higher one, and popping out of the one above the ground, landing with about as much impact as jumping down from a fence. Kevin stood up straight, brushing some dust off of his pants, and surveyed the land around him, somewhat surprised.

"Well, shit," Kevin muttered to himself, "Some forest this is. Maybe I should call Sycamore out on false advertising. That'd be fucking priceless…" Kevin trailed off, raising his scythe to a more offensive position, holding it in both hands and listening for any sounds of what might be grimm. Hearing nothing, Kevin sighed, taking his scythe back into one hand and jabbing the non-bladed end into the ground, leaning on it. "Fan-fucking-tastic, I'm in a barren wasteland, with no idea where the hell to find the damn relics, let alone a partner. Wonderful."

He looked around once more, and, discerning that his complaints had fallen upon the deaf ears of the cliff faces and barely-living trees around him, he picked up Ebony Reaper and began to walk, hoping he'd find something. Well, at least getting around the cliffs wouldn't be much of a challenge. Thank god for monkey siblings and parents teaching him how to climb shit, as well as his excessively mobility oriented glyphs.

To say Keye was eager about launch day was an understatement, he was quite thrilled beyond his usual realm of excitement and hype. There was no doubt in his mind he'd get through today, and the prospect of finding a partner was what ignited his spark. The Dukes had been inspected thrice over, and each fist had its own dust cartridge loaded. The left fist was primed and ready when needed to utilize Toxic Dust, and the right fist was loaded with Impact Dust. Following the little lecture, the sound of the launch pads going off turned up the anticipation. Crouching down he readied himself for launch with naught but "grab onto something" as his landing plan. A full proof plan, less he be launched into open meadows.

In part fear and part excitement, Keye laughed aloud as he flew through the air. For such a small platform he didn't expect it to have such kick. "A'kay a'kay a'kay, landing!" There was no way he could effectively slow his descent, luckily for him the cliffs below provided a decent opportunity for landing, somewhat, safely. Somewhat. Punching and grabbing were about all he had, and what little movement practice he'd done was going to be put to the test for sure.

As he began to descend through the fall he focused on the incoming mass of rock and dirt. When near he clawed at the cliffs and gripped tightly, causing rubble and debris to fall to the ground below. Keeping the momentum going he pushed off, extending the Dukes to launch him away, grabbing a rocky pillar with the mechanical hands to curb the speed of his descent. Letting go he sent himself on the last stretch, a not-so-hazardous fall onto the floor below. With the help of the Dukes he was able to catch himself and cushion the landing with little more than a thud.

"HAHA!" He wasn't dead! "Nailed it!" Not at all a stealthy approach, but dammit he stuck the landing yet. Taking a moment to catch his breath he stood himself up straight, shading his face with one of the dukes as he looked around. No one yet, but hopefully that would change. If there were other students launched here, then they'd be looking for others too. His gaze shifted from one end of the cliffy canyon to the other.

Beginning one way he walked off before his steps pivoted him in the opposite direction. Shortly thereafter he stopped. Diantha had said their scrolls held clues as to the whereabouts of the artifacts in the area. That was all fine and dandy, but there in lied the problem. He couldn't reach them with the Dukes on, and thus created a window for any grimm to attack him. "...Hm...I'll find some'ne, n' they'll guide me." He said with a shrug. Turning back around he walked off in the original direction he'd started off in, hoping he was heading towards someone.

Kevin had been wandering the wonderfully illogical terrain for a good while now (seriously, there were cliffs on top of cliffs), and he still hadn't found any other living things. He hadn't even found any grimm to take out some frustration on. Well, that was settled. He was probably going to end up stuck out there and die. Some way to start the school year that was. But, just as he was about to resign to the fact that he was more or less fucked, Kevin saw what looked like… Well, someone in the distance. He decided to close the distance between him and whatever it was by using psychic glyphs, depositing himself right behind the other individual.

Luckily for Kevin, it looked like he'd managed to find another student, and not a grimm. As soon as he realized that, he let out a sigh of relief, before attempting to get the other's attention, seeing as he'd ended up behind the large figure.

"Hey!" Kevin said, a bit louder than he would have normally spoken. Once he was sure he had the stranger's attention, he continued. "Shit, I was fucking terrified I wouldn't find anyone out here. So, uh, I guess us running into each other out here makes us partners and shit. Unless you already ran into someone and you split up. Either way, I'm Kevin," He paused a moment, only just now noticing the other student's apparent yaoi hands, before muttering, "And those are some damn big gloves."

Keye had tensed a bit when he heard an odd sound behind him, swinging around and almost knocking out the poor kid as he spoke. Luckily for Kevin, he had a lid on himself. A smile returned to his lips as he gave a bit of a laugh. He could definitely sympathize with the feeling of being lost out here indefinitely. The idea had come up in his mind or moment or two while walking around.

"Nah nah, no partners yet, lil' man." He spoke reassuringly. "You're the first person I've seen." Of course when the other hunter mentioned his weapon Keye could only put on a proud grin. "Well, kinda hard to punch grimm when ya got tiny normal folk hands, ain't it?" It seemed an appropriate train of thought. Fists too small? Make them bigger. "Nice simple scythe ya got. Do anythin' fancy with it?" There was a pause before he added, "Ah, name's Keye!" before extending his fist. A fist bump had to do, as he wasn't too terribly confident in trying to shake hands with the Dukes yet. That'd require finer motor control.

"Keye? Alright, nice to meet you, Keye. Glad to have a partner out here in the middle of fucking nowhere." Kevin smiled a little bit, since the guy seemed nice enough. He cautiously returned the fist bump with the fucking giant metal hand before continuing. "And yeah, I guess if you're a hand to hand fighter, you'd want to make your hands more effective. Makes sense. Otherwise you're fucked," Kevin said, more or less fully understanding Keye's logic. Honestly, it sounded like something his brothers might've done. He then swung his scythe around to hold it in both hands, shrugging. "And Ebony Reaper here? Nah, I can't do too much special shit with it yet. I'm hoping to upgrade it, but for now? It holds the dust I need for my glyphs."

Kevin returned to only holding his scythe in a single hand, looking around the immediate vicinity. Nope, still looked empty as fuck, save for a few rocks scattered here and there. Well, he didn't know what he expected. It was just cliff upon cliff upon cliff. Kevin sighed, pulling out his scroll and hoping it'd have some sort of helpful info for him. As he did so, he figured he might as well keep the conversation rolling, because good god, it was nice to actually have someone to talk to in an environment where someone could otherwise easily consider themselves doomed to be alone for the rest of eternity.

"So, when we were launched, I was under the impression we'd end up in a forest. Some forest this is, right?" Kevin asked, rolling his eyes. "Honestly, this is the kind of shit that you don't expect from a prestigious academy. 'Yes, your initiation will take place in the woods, let us just drop you in the middle of a fucking wasteland.' I swear to god…" As he spoke, Kevin had been looking at his scroll, trying to find his way to something that would be of use.

Ebony Reaper. Nice simple name for a nice simplistic weapon, and by the sounds of it he himself was a glyph user. That could definitely prove to be quite interesting. No one in his family, as far as he was aware, had any ability with glyphs, nor had he too often seen them in use. Not effectively anyway, most students at combat school who could utilize them were just getting the knack of things.

This guy sure did seem to get worked pretty easily, and Keye found himself just smirking at him about it as he watched him. "Honestly, I think it's the kinda thing they'd intend ta do." They weren't too terribly far from the actual forest, from what he could gather when he was in the air. This region just, for whatever reason, lacked the ability to support much life. "The whole 'be ready for anything' kinda thing, ya know?"

As he spoke he leaned over the shorter hunter, looking at the scroll. "They said these're supposed to have hints for the relics. If ya want, ya can get mine outta my pocket n' take a looksie n' see if it has anything different on it. I can't really grab it as I am now. Heh."

Kevin sighed as he looked at his scroll, not really finding anything pertaining to the relics. Just general warnings about the area they were in. Watch out for bird grimm, all that shit. Well, that wouldn't be a problem for him, he was neutral in typing to flying grimm. He sighed, closing his scroll and placing it back in his pocket.

"Yeah, I guess we should be ready for anything. And this is definitely anything, it just came way out of left field," Kevin muttered, tapping his fingers on his scythe. He really didn't know what to do at this point other than to keep wandering. Kevin did, however, think that the taller student's suggestion was pretty good.

"Alright, sure, worth a shot. Not like we have anything to lose by me checking your scroll. Let's see if it has some different stuff on it. Preferably less shitty stuff like mine just jabbering about the high chance of seeing bird grimm here… Let me just…" Kevin walked around Keye, trying to find the pocket with the scroll in it. Once he did, he pulled it out, opening it up and looking through it for anything that could be deemed useful information.

Being an underground mole had its ups and downs - quite literally! Usually, teachers and seasoned hunters alike warn of death from above, with the fabled and feared Skarmory and Talonflame able to wipe out entire teams in mere moments. But, these sorts of hunters would be woefully inept at fighting this particular with their eyes fixed fearfully at the clouds.

There are well over seven hundred kinds of Grimm, some who flew, some who swam, some who mysteriously floated - but rarest of all were the ones who preferred to strike from below.

Breaching from the earth, a decently sized Drillbur grimm made itself known, writhing in the air as it blindly struggled mid-air to maim one of the huntsmen. Another erupted mere feet away, its six-inch bladed claws milling the air before narrowly missing Keye and flopping into the hard cliff-face with a grunt. However, the black-and-white ground-beasts weren't finished yet, a third plowing through the adjacent cliff at head-height, vying for its long claws to meet tender flesh.

Whatever hint was on that scroll would have to wait with the arrival of these ground dwelling grimm. "Kev, stash it for now!" The first Drillbur seemed to have a lose concept of where they'd been before surfacing, but the second was much closer with its surprise attack. These things were speedy for sure.

"Heh, looks like I'm not the only one diggin' the scene." Rumbling had caught Keyes attention after making the pun, his attention turned to the cliff wall as the third of the mole creatures erupted from it. Great. A critic. He opened up his palm, grabbing the third creature and bearing down with a crushing grip. The sound of cracking bones sounded off the more pressure he put down before throwing the squirming form against the other drillbur that'd flopped against the cliff. With a quick dash and jump Keye raised both his mechanical fists, aiming to bring them down on the two moles.
