Launch Day: [KMMT]: Tilly and Marianne

GM Account

Ancient Hut

This area is a clearing surrounded by a particularly thick forest. It a fairly large structure with one entrance to a roof that looks above the trees. The structure is made of stone and is in an absolutely miserable state, with moss covering the walls in the most inopportune places. If you weren't afraid of the moss breaking on you, you could attempt to climb the structure from the outside, but... It's ill advised.

The inside of the structure is even more miserable than the outside, although one particular thing sticks out. The giant, black, armored gothic church bell that hangs from the ceiling. Perhaps it's not hanging so much as it's floating? Either way, it is a Bronzong Grimm, and it will certainly attempt to fuck your shit up if you walk under it. If you take notice of this entity, tread carefully and lightly.

The outside of the hut seems to be peppered with Ralts grimm looking for a way in. Maybe they've lost something? Either way, it's a very peculiar building, with the roof offering a look see over the entire forest.

The GM for this thread is Brandon. GM's will RP mook (weak) Grimm during combat, to get players accustomed to working with a GM.The combat system will not be used for these first two threads.

The launch pad send Marianne soaring high into the air, buffeted by thermals as she tried to regain her orientation in air. She squinted through the wind whipping her face, shielding her eyes from the air as she descended faster and faster towards a grove of trees.

A strange structure jutted out before her and in a heartbeat, she made her decision. Her arms lashed out and her rope darts flew from her fingertips from their place under her forearms. She felt them sink into one of the ancient trees with two satisfying thunks, anchoring her to something solid as she swung down through the canopy, branches and leaves whipping her as she passed. The crumbling wall of the structure appeared before her and as she was about to hit it, she let her semblance flare, coating her body with a translucent skin of glittering scales.

The wall was more fragile than it appeared and Marianne managed to crash through easily enough. She grunted as she released her darts, rolling hard on the ground as the wall behind her collapsed.

She listened for a long moment, waiting to see if she even had time to recover from her fall before shakily getting to her feet, taking a cutlass out and leaning on it to help her up. Pausing to lean against the gap in the wall, she stopped to catch her breath in the middle of the hole she had just made...

Tilly grasped her festering stomach of nerves as she was directed to the launch plate at the far end of the cliffside. So she was going to be the very last to take off? The copper skinned girl swallowed heavily, trying to keep her eyes open with the utmost concentration at the Professor's words. When she landed she'd be paired up with whoever she first made eye contact with? O-Okay, no pressure.

Glancing to her right, she watched as the students were catapulted into the air one by one. Tilly swallowed again and a small queasy noise left her throat. The student beside her assured her that she was also scared. The paragon's eyebrows furrowed, "I'm not scared?" she responded in confusion. Why would she be scared? Why would any of these students be here if they were scared?

No, not scared.

Excited.

Near hysterical.

The Hunter beside her wished a final goodluck and the hissing release of air of the launch pad sent them flinging above the wood's canopy. Tilly bent her legs slightly to absorb the shock and positioned her body like her mother had instructed. Chandragupta I warmed from its sheath on her back and the paragon felt the pride and expectation of her parents spiritually emitting from its glowing core. She exhaled. She would be with the Grimm soon.

Tilly was launched into the air and immediately curled herself into a ball, pulling her knees deep under her chin. The launch pad had catapulted her in a straight line so she wasn't spinning out of control like what had happened to some of the other students. She reminded herself that a lot of them weren't as lucky as her to have had so much training prior to the academy. The paragon cannonballed into the canopy of the forest like a meteor entering the earth's atmosphere. Twigs and branches snapped away at the sheer force of her spinning. Tilly exhaled. She must be getting close to the ground.

The huntress opened her limbs, unsheathing her mace and pointed it toward the forest floor. Shit, she was far closer to the ground than she had assumed. The crystals dug into the earth and Tilly was flung forward, grip tightening on the end of the mace which dragged acting as a parachute but catching the ground instead of the air.

Fuck, fuck, fuck. Sweat from her excitement was causing her grasp to slide on the smooth handle of Chandragupta I. An urgent whine escaped her as she tried to reach it with her other hand but her ponytail whipped against her face as she looked up.

Losing her grip, the mace was planted in the ground with the absence of its' dragging force and Tilly was flung away, hitting the ground and rolling across the grass faster than she was able to control. Limbs spinning, the human tried to dig her spiky golden fingerguards into the earth to no success. A short moment later she felt herself roll off the side of a hill and fell a short distance, coming to a dizzy, sore stop at the bottom of what she assumed was a dip in the forest floor.

Tilly didn't move and kept her eyes closed with a groan. It was apparent she needed more practice at the whole landing strategy thing. Thank the gods her parents weren't there to witness it. As her senses gradually returned to her, she realised she was lying on something. Like two small logs. Or feet.

Marianne was, as virtually all of her classmates were, a top notch fighter and no slouch with her cutlasses. Though still an amateur against Grimm, she knew how to ward off attacks from humans and other reasonably sized assailants through her grandmother’s precise, powerful cutlass techniques passed down since the days of her ancestors. She had trained specially with her father’s Hunting crew for months before Kalos, learning just a little about the ways in which Grimm operated so she could exploit their weaknesses. She was prepared to fight against any threat, Human or Grimm, that stood in her way.

She was not prepared to square off against fleshy cannonballs though and nearly had a heart attack when one came rocketing at her.

A shadow passed over the sun for a moment and Marianne suddenly had the feeling she was under attack. Multiscale flaring she whipped around, wincing a little as she felt a bruise from the impact spread up her side in time to see something tumble out of the sky and land at her feet.

She recoiled a few steps, nearly losing her balance as she stuck her other cutlass into the ground to steady herself. She tugged her hood up over her head, tucking her hair and fins inside as she rotated her wrists tensely. When it was clear that the other Huntress hadn’t died, Marianne closed the gap between them, unsure of who this girl was…or more importantly what. Perhaps it would be wise to just run; take a chance with a partner she was sure of…on the other hand…

On the other hand…

“Can you stand?” Marianne said, carefully toeing the line between a cold tone she used for humans and the more amicable tone she took with others of her species. She glanced the girl over for any signs that might make her any surer about the girl.

“If you can…get up slowly,” Marianne said, teeth tensing a little as she quickly tried to see if she had enough room to fight or run. Rumor through the student rumor mill was that there were more than a few human students who had accosted Faunus arriving on campus and Marianne didn’t want to spend the next four years sleeping with one eye open.

To be perfectly honest, the unknown girl could have been a bigger threat to her than the Grimm in the forest were…

“Who are you?”

Tilly froze for a moment. The thing that her brought her tumble to cease was another person. The human garbed in white and gold gave a groan and rolled onto her elbows, long hair slipping off her shoulders and pooling onto the carved out ground. "I think so," she nodded, pushing herself onto her knees and slowly getting to her feet like she had been advised to. That's nice of them, she thought, They mustn't want me to get a headspin.

Rubbing her eyes and stretching her back, the paragon defensively held her hands out as soon as she saw the aggressive stance the other huntress had taken. "Woah!" Tilly cried, taking a step back, slipping slightly on the hole's incline, "L-Look, I'm insolent!" The girl shortly shook her head. "Innocent!!"

Was this huntress for real?! Humans and Faunus were on the same side in the Academy. They had a common enemy. Remember the common enemy, girl? Tilly's eyes darted about the other girl. Dark skin, muscles practically bulging out of her raiment, blue and white fins protruding from her neck and those sharp cutlasses catching the glare of the sun. She looked three times as strong as Tilly and a hundred times as intimidating. This was one of those Faunus who had vendetta on Humans, right? With no one else around, she might as well have signed her death wish.

She gave a flicked glance behind her, catching the glow of Chandragupta I from the crest of the outer hole and took another cautious step back, "I'm not charmed," she tripped over her words and her boots, "I mean unarmed." Tilly's hands flew back to catch herself against the side of the hole. Her terrified breathing was loud in her ears as a silent pause passed by. "I'm... Matilda," she answered slowly through a light swallow.

Matilda.

Marianne looked the girl over from neck to toe with a small sigh through her nose as she realized she had stumbled onto a human (or more accurately, the reverse had happened). She was careful not to meet her eyes, wincing a little as she stowed one sword on her hip while keeping the other angled at the ground towards the girl.

“Well…Matilda the Insolent and Innocent,” Marianne said, stalking across the length of the ancient hut, looking around for another way out. “You’ll pardon the curtness lass but I had hoped for a partner with a little more teeth and a might more tail. So so long as you keep your eyes casting about for that weapon of yours and off mine, we can both get along with our day without any more bruises than we already had.”

Marianne had no real desire to pick a fight with someone in the middle of nowhere and the girl looked to be sufficiently intimidated by her…besides, as fit as the girl appeared from the neck down, Marianne was comfortably sure that she could handle the girl if it came to violence…

As the only one armed, she thought the odds were squarely in her favor in that respect.

Tilly groaned to herself. This 'insolent and innocent' motto was not going to fly. She was the Aquarian Paragon for gods sake! She held out a finger to correct her but was cut off as the other began to dissolve their partnership before it had a chance to start. Well Tilly didn't want to partner with her either! In addition, this girl was extremely rude, talking to her chest or feet. "Sounds good to me," the human nodded rightly and turned to climb out of the hole.

She breathed a sigh of relief once Chandragupta I was safely in her hands once more and she finally had an opportunity to survey where she had landed. Seemed like some kind of rotting ancient structure. She swung around to see the towering ominous church. It's very presence sent a shiver down her spine. Tilly spotted Marianne already pottering around the perimeter of the structure's decrepit walls, probably looking for a way out.

Tilly followed suit travelling in the opposite direction to a particularly mossy part of the rotting walls and rubbed her mace against the stonework, ripping away the greenery to reveal some unreadable symbols. She gave up on the wall and placed her mace on a broken column like a stone stump protruding from the ground and ran her thumbs under the straps of her bra before bending over to remove a rock that had found its way in her boot.

The human held a hand over her eyes to look out of the enclosed area, forest towering around the perimeter. It was oddly peaceful in this place even though it was probably filled with Grimm hidden away somewhere. Tilly gasped at the realisation. Of course! Grimm!! Her parents weren't here to 'protect' her anymore. She rubbed her cheek in excitement. She was going to meet a Grimm! Maybe more! Oh! Oh oh oh oh!!!

"Hey!" Tilly called across the clearing, grabbing the handle of her mace and jogging to where the faunus girl was, "Hey!!" When she got close enough to not have to yell, the human came to a stop, enthusiasm glowing from every inch of her, "Do you know where I can find some Grimm?"

Marianne let the girl ready herself in peace, keeping a weathered eye poking out from under her hood to monitor the girl while she felt around for another weak wall to break through. The ancient structure stretched a floor above them with the only light coming from cracks in the roof. Something heavy and metal was glimmering on the second floor on what looked like an altar of some kind. It looked like a bell but Marianne didn’t particularly care if it had any religious significance; it looked heavy enough to crack through the flimsy wall behind it provided Marianne could push it over…

She was shaken out of her plotting by the girl’s bubbly voice which was about as out of place in such a dusty, dreary wreck of a ruin as an old china cup might be in a shipwreck.

“Grimm? What in damnation do you mean-“

She didn’t expect the girl to be so close behind her when she turned to glance in her general direction and nearly had a heart attack when she turned around to find her practically beaming with excitement not two meters behind her. She jumped a little which she tried to disguise as a nonchalant shrug of her shoulder.

“Fire and brimstone, do I need to get you a collar with a bell on it?” Marianne said, breathing a little heavily as she pushed the hood out of her face, letting her ponytail and fins bounce free. “Warn me next time you sneak up on me like-“

There was a terrible fact about short women that Marianne (as the proverbial titaness that she was) failed to take into account; they were always much shorter than she thought they were.

She intended to aim her gaze at the girl’s neckline but, as Marianne had nearly half a foot on the girl, she found her eyes locking squarely with a pair of questioning dark brown eyes.

Oh…piss.

Eyebrows furrowing at the faunus girl's jittery reaction, Tilly pushed her lips together. Collar and a bell? She was rude. The human started bitterly back into the blue eyes. Staring… Oh. OH! Now, Tilly didn't mind being paired with anyone but she already knew this girl was firmly against the idea. A hand flew over her own eyes. They could pretend that didn't just happen right?

"Uh, about that--"

A gong-like noise piqued Tilly's attention and she turned towards the steeple of the church, opening her fingers to peer through. From this advantageous position, she could see two red eyes gazing around sleepily, apparently not aware there were visitors. No wonder it was oddly quiet. Not even other Grimm wanted to disturb it.

Tilly stumbled toward Marianne in surprise and hugged around her arm, nearly cowering behind the faunus. Her dark eyes stared widely up to the Grimm hanging lazily from the bell tower, trying to contain the elated squeaks that could be mistaken for whines of fear. Ohmygods ohmygods ohmygods. There one was! A Grimm! A real live Grimm in the flesh! Or.. whatever they were made from. Tilly bounced excitedly on her heels, "That's a Grimm!" she whispered to the faunus girl, "Can you see it?!"

Whatever gods there were, they were spitting and laughing at Marianne as the enormity of her mistake washed over her. No matter how much she wished she could pretend it didn’t happen, the staff probably had a way to enforce partnerships. Hidden security cameras or something equally invasive…either way there was likely no way she could avoid it now.

This…klutz was her new partner.

Before she could get another curse out there came a deep heavy gong noise that echoed throughout the hut. Marianne felt the girl stumble into her, touching her which sent a wave of fear rushing down her spine like lightning. She covered it up with a toothy grimace but before she could tear her arm away, the girl’s words echoed.

“…a Grimm?” Marianne said, tugging her arm free and resting her hand on her sheathed weapon. She glanced around the empty hut. The only thing she could see was the bell…a strange looking bell but a bell nonetheless.

“That…” Marianne said, breathing through her nose. “Is a bell. Grimm are four legged hairy beasts with less hygiene sensibility than a men’s locker-room. How hard did you knock that head of yours when you landed?”
