Cave of Wonders

Chloe and Locke are flung like sacks of potatoes through the air, spinning towards the far end of the area and towards a gaping crater in the earth. The area is surrounded by trees which can be used to slow descent but try as they may, both end up rolling/landing in the crater that seems too steep to climb. The only landmark nearby is a cave that goes into the mountain. The entrance to the cave is lit by torches, suggesting that it is the only path forward but deep within the earth comes churning and groaning sounds that suggest that they won't be the only ones in the cave...

The GM is Banjo. He will be rping mook (weak) Grimm during combat to get people used to working with a GM. The combat system will not be used for these first two threads. Please begin by RPing your landing strategy.

Have fun and happy Landing Day!

All the preparations felt pointless right now. Being flung to the sky made her stomach twist and turn and she figured she shouldn't have eaten such a big breakfast.
As much as she enjoyed heights and climbing, free falling was not part of those joys. A sense of control was necessary.

The brunette brought her sais out and managed to stab into a tree, slowing her down a little bit, but not enough to soften her fall. Many things could be said about the teenager. Being graceful was not among those. The grip on the tree only staggered her as she used the other to try stabbing into another tree while descending really fast.

Chloe braced for impact, knowing that despite slowing her descent, it would still hurt.
Her body tumbled across the ground for several feet until she hit the steep slope on the other side.
"Owww..." a soft whine escaped and she had to take a moment to catch her breath again after the hard fall. Nothing was broken and she could stand after a short while, although still wobbled.
A crater huh? The brunette coughed, spitting out some dirt and brushed off her clothes.
"Blech.." Alright then. Time to go find that partner...

Falling from the sky was the last of the snake's worries in regards to Launch Day. The part that really scared him? The people. He wasn't sure what kind of team he'd be stuck in, or the types of people he'd be forced to rely on for the sake of graduation. All Locke knew for sure was that he had to play nice and attempt to last the next four years without dying, killing someone else, or a combination of the two. He inhaled a quick breath through his long nose before the spring released and he was sent flying through the air.

IN A STUPID DIRECTION.

He audibly groaned and squinted as some other students were fired off in much more beneficial locations. The Faunus had to assume that each spring loaded trap they'd been forced to stand on was set to send people hurtling in a completely different way from the two on either side of it. For fun, clearly. The heir grumbled and glared at the crater he was headed towards. Wow that wouldn't hurt at all.

In a snap Locke flicked his arm out that held his weapon. The Death Rattle unfurled from it's compacted cane form into a long serrated whip which he snapped out to secure around a branch of one of the nearby trees. The weight was shifted as he fell and instead of hitting the ground he swung over and up-- and onto a branch! He blinked as he missed the branch. How had he missed such an easy target!? The loud snap of the weak wood caught up with him and before he could flail to grab onto anything whirling past him he felt his body smack into the ground. Again. And again. Downwards, in fact, in rolled!

A series of swears left the snake as he rolled down the crater. But finally he laid sprawled out and panting as dust clung to his skin and stung his eyes. His landing had been planned out for weeks! He knew he was going to get some sort of tree to catch his fall with! And now he'd just made an utter fool of himself! The snake sat up slowly, is body aching in protest. Thankfully it looked like no one had witnesses his folly so he took the time to get back onto his feet and brush the dirt from himself. Locke gathered his long braid and slung it back over his shoulder as he carefully pulled small bits of debris from the tightly woven hair. As he absentmindedly groomed himself he turned his attention over to the cave that seemed to be both the entrance and the exit to the area by means other than being thrown.

Drawn by the desire of getting out of the forest he stalked towards the cave. Shame he hadn't noticed the person that had landed far more gracefully!

After gathering herself from the painful landing, Chloe saw a cave further ahead. There didn't seem to be any other way out of this huge crater. Climbing the walls had proved impossible, even for a skilled climber like herself. Too steep and nothing to really grab onto.

That didn't stop her from trying one more time, only to slide back down again and sigh deeply, accepting defeat.
The cave it was then. It was dark except for the torches illuminating the entrance.
"Screw that I'm not going in without a light..." Chloe picked one of the torches off the wall and proceeded deeper.

Picking off the torch proved to be a good idea. This way she could easily see where she was treading, hopefully minimizing the chance to be jumped by whatever could possibly be hiding in here.
She didn't walk alone for very long, seeing a person up ahead. That had to be a student! He had a tail and... long black hair from what she could see.

"Hello?" she called after them, trying not to be too loud as she stepped up her pace to catch up to them. This cave was already creepy and if she could go through it with someone else she preferred that. As much as she liked horror movies she'd rather not LIVE one herself.

The cave seemed like anything other than friendly and Locke had to wonder, as he stepped carefully around the rugged ground, who had been the poor schmuck forced to light the torches that lined the walls. Before he'd ventured too far into the darkness he opted to pull one of the torches from it's cradle. The snake was careful to keep the flames from his mass of hair, but he had to of looked a bit foolish with the way he held the torch. His arm was stretched to it's limits as he held it from his body awkwardly.

"Merely a cave...nothing strange, just dank...dark...filled with insects and other garbage no doubt." He muttered to himself as he realized just how much of a city boy he was. Trained to be a hunter, sure. Although his actual field training had been limited and his schooling had mostly been hypothetical when it came to environments. Locke was capable when engaged with a target, but he felt out of his element now. "That was the point Maurice, to be tested further." He scoffed to himself as he half mocked the situation.

The snake froze in an instant as he heard a voice behind him. NO. Dammit. His eyes widened and he whipped around, arm still outstretched, to scrutinize whoever managed to find him. It was....a girl, no doubt from that voice. She also appeared to be human. Locke's ears flicked back against his skull, a bit peeved at what he was given to work with. He spared the other teenager a glance that lasted several seconds before he continued to stalk off. He could find a better partner.

It seemed like he heard her. There was something familiar about them too. Especially the hair. They had a lot of it, it was black and they had a tail.
Oh! Him! It was hard to make out everything but it had to be him!

Why was he leaving?
"Wait!" she'd just found him! They were supposed to be partners now, he couldn't just leave!
"We're... partners..." Chloe huffed and followed the other deeper into the cave, keeping her ears open for everything. With only the torch as a light source the range of sight was limited.

For a few minutes she walked by herself. The other student seemed to have disappeared in the darkness of the cave or tunnel or whatever this cold pit of dankness was.
Chloe shuddered a bit at the thought of what could be hiding down here...
Just a few steps ahead she slipped on some wet mud or rock and toppled over, rolling down a small descent until she stopped, sitting upright.

"Ow." With her free hand, she wiped her face and brushed her shirt before getting back on her feet.
Where was that damn snake??

Just keep walking, just keep walking.

Locke pressed his ears to the side of his skull like a peeved cat might and grumbled to himself as he heard the human call out for him. The snake was feeling particularly picky on who he'd spend the next 4 years with and it surely wasn't going to be her! Rules be damned, he could find someone worth it his time. As the other student clambered through the cave behind him the Seviper's lips peeled back into a sneer. No grace, no stealth...

He jumped to the side as the girl tumbled past him and wiped out on at the bottom of the rocky slant. His pupils expanded in the dark as he scrutinized the human further. Still she didn't seemed familiar to him, and he contemplated throwing the torch so she wouldn't see him. His vision was decent enough in the pitch black! Locke was sure he'd be able to make it safely through the cave.

Or he could walk past her. Quickly. His boots clicked against the rock as he hurried in the only direction the cave offered.

This was not turning out as well as she'd hoped. He left again and Chloe huffed, scrambling to her feet and hurrying after him.
"It's rude to just walk away from someone like that." she pointed out.

This was how the rules worked. The first person you made eye contact with would be your partner for the next four years. If she could help it she would've rather partnered with someone else as well, but here they were.

"You can complain to the principal when we get outta here. If we survive. I heard noises further ahead." For all she knew she'd just imagined it and they could get through this cave or tunnel without trouble. The other options though? Could be smaller grimm, which were no problem. They could take those on, obviously!
If it was bigger and stronger though... She wasn't sure. For all she knew they could die on the first day. That'd be embarrassing and she really hoped it didn't come to that.

She held the torch up and tried to look ahead, but it still didn't light up more than the small radius it already covered. Maybe she should just throw it away and let her eyes get used to the dark.
There was that noise again too...
"Let's get going. I'd like to meet the other two and get back to the school as soon as possible. Preferrably without dying."

As the pair of less than ideally matched hunters continued to bicker, their voices drew the attention of the cave's inhabitants...

The sound of rustling, rushing, flapping wings filled the cramped hallways followed by the sound of a harsh, keening battle cry echoed by hundreds of tiny Grimm, pale black wings beating faster and faster as the swarm converged out of side tunnels and crawlspaces on the two hunters.

Zubat

No Grimm was more invasive, more hated than the Zubat who nested in caves across the world and seemed to pester hunters at every turn. Despite their small size and pitiful defenses, the pervasiveness of these creatures made them universally loathsome and obnoxious.

The pests whirled and turned above the two hunters, shrieking and dive bombing them in the narrow cave corridors.

Locke turned on his heel as he heard the human pipe up and begin to follow him, "I will complain! Or I will find someone else instead and claim that we met eyes first! It is not like they can watch us from down here!" Presumably. "If the rules get twisted a little no one is going to care..." As he spoke his ear twitched and focused on some irritating screeching. It sounded like hell!

The snake squinted back at the human that had caught up to him, "Oh no no! We are parting as soon as we get out of this cave! You can go find a new team to play with!" Ugh, he'd picked up her slight accent and gave a small groan of disgust. She sounded like a damn hick.

Before he was able to take another step or utter another word the pair was swarmed. He jumped back a few steps as the flying rats dive bombed and nearly got tangled in his hair. A few got too close for comfort and the snake whipped his cane out to knock them from the air. They weren't difficult to deal with, but the sheer number was intimidating. Locke needed range and speed and the cane wasn't necessarily the best form to achieve that with.

The Seviper flicked his wrist and snapped the cane out to release the tightly bound thread. Links of razor chain fell slack before the snake cracked the whip and sliced it through the air with a large swing. The serrated edges cut into the Grimm's wings and small bodies and brought them to the ground with relative ease, but even that had barely dented their numbers. "Frick..." He growled as another bat tried to attack his face and slapped it from his personal space with the back of his hand. "Disgusting! Eugh!"
