Launch Day-- MJAV [Vixen and Alex]; I can't 'sand' all the heat!

The Sand Canyon

It's so odd how much the landscape in the launch area varies. As Vixen and Alex fly, the trees give way to a small, hot desert. Everything in this area is rock and sediment, layered in sand. Running down this barren, flat landscape is a long, narrow canyon crack, and at the bottom appears to be... more sand. Sometimes, to any hunter's dismay, the sand will shift without warning-- a sign of life underneath.
The only noticeable landmarks are large, oddly black boulders, scattered around the desert. Some of the boulders are in fun shapes... Well, specifically, one fun shape. In amonst all the boring, circular boulders, some appear to be in the shape of suns. There appear to be a large pile of boulders down at the end of the canyon. Also, is it just me or is the sun shining even brighter in this area?

The GM is Katie. She will be rping mook (weak) Grimm during combat to get people used to working with a GM. The combat system will not be used for these first two threads. Please begin by RPing your landing strategy.

Have fun and happy Landing Day!

Vixen and Drake

Oh fuck. Vixen was not prepared.

Okay, she... should have been paying more attention to what Professor whats-his-face was saying. She should have been pouring over the rulebook that Drake had with him like it was a second tail. She should have realized that Launch Day was a literal Launch Day, and it was happening in the morning where she had no powers of her own to speak of. She also should have realized that she had lost sight of her twin brother and now had no way to spot him in between everyone else.

"I'M NOT READY!" Vixen screamed, scrambling around on her launch pad and trying to hook her claws into the crevices between pad and cement. "I'M NOT READY I'M NOT READY I'M NOT READY--"

FWOOM.

With a scream the half-awake Umbreon faunus was pelted through the air, tumbling and screeching the entire way, trying to get a hold of herself as her stomach flipped.

Holy fuck she had never been the twin who was good with heights. That belonged to her kitty brother. Instead, the Umbreon faunus finally had to bite back her screams, her eyes watering up from the wind whipping past her as she tried to focus on the scenery.

Heat beat down on her back, something familiar... just as the sick sensation of falling started to take over.

"SHITFUCKSHITSHITFUCKSHITFUCK!" Vixen yipped, flipping in the air and realizing that the sand and rocks were coming up to her and this landing was going to hurt.

The Umbreon faunus closed her eyes and waited for the inevitable.

Launch day. Launch day, launch day, launch day. Alex was nervous, excited, and felt like he might throw up in fear and excitement. This was happening. He was going to do this, he was going to be a hunter. A nervous smile had taken its place on his face a while ago, his mask hiding his eyes and therefore the anticipating glint in his eye. With his sword hilt strapped firmly to his waist and fresh ice crystals in his bracers, he was ready for this! He'd been training for years, he could do this!

The headmaster stopped speaking, and Alex began to hear the telltale clicks of platforms beside him launching his fellow classmates. He was unaware that he was grinning as he readied himself, keeping his knees bent and this stance wide. The student right next to him screamed, getting launched in the air, and Alex sucked in a breath.

"FOR GLORY!!!!" he bellowed as he was thrown into the air, his voice quickly losing volume as he had the air punched right out of his lungs. He found himself violently tumbling through the air and quickly righted himself as his ascent slowed to a stop. He drew his sword hilt and created a double-edged blade, striking a pose similar to one of the prince on the box art of one of the recent games he'd played, his blade spearheading his path of descent.

Now came the tricky part. He didn't really have any way to slow himself down, per se, at least not in midair. As he got closer to the ground, the morning sun starting to bear down on his back, he did a somersault so that his feet, now with the blades switched to the bottoms of them, were going first. He pulled his free hand across his body so that it was near his head, fingers bent as he pulled power from the ice dust. As soon as he was in range, he flung his hand in front of him, a frosty beam shooting out and freezing part of the ground. It built up to him, creating a short slide of sorts. His skates hit the ice, and he formed the ramp as he went, forming a large circle as he tried to rid himself of his forward momentum.

Just as he managed to curve around, he spotted a figure hurtling towards his general area, generally screaming in a panicked manner. He cursed under his breath. He couldn't freeze two things at once! He had to think, and quickly!

Without thinking if his idea was a good one or not, he curved the ramp in front of him upwards, ending it shortly. He got some air as he then threw his hand out towards what he now recognized to be a girl, forming a slide underneath her - enough to guide her to the ramp he'd made for himself, which still seemed to be going strong. He quickly looked back to his feet, finding that they were far too close to the sand now, and in a panic, attempted to create a patch of ice underneath him. His skates touched thin ice for a split second before he found himself careening through the sand. He pulled his limbs towards his body in an attempt to make things less painful, rolling through the sand and generally trying not to hurt himself. It was a rough landing, but not as bad as it could be, all things considered. By the time he stopped tumbling, there was sand everywhere - in his hair and in his clothes, for starters. And yet, he couldn't be more elated.

"That was amazing!" he whooped.

Vixen and Drake

Vixen was going to eat shit and die and that was just what life had planned for her, apparently. Years of the gladiator games had trained her for this moment and they were going to let her the fuck down. The Umbreon faunus covered her face and prayed that somehow she could tuck into a roll and not break her neck on the way down.

Instead, the sudden sensation of ice caused the faunus to yelp as her descent was cut abruptly off by a ramp of some sorts, the ice searing her hot skin to the touch. She whimpered and tried to removed her bare arms from the ice, sliding instead on her back and her tail tangled between her legs, squinting to get a view of where she was going. There was a figure in front of her, but they just fell into the sand and Vixen realized she was going to fall on top of them if she didn't do something and make this worse for both of them.

Vixen turned and slammed her shoulder into the ice, teeth chattering and fangs hooking into her lip before she managed to slow herself down enough, spreading her hand and dragging her claws through the ramp.. and then rolled off the ramp just before the makeshift ice rink the figure had created for themselves. Vixen rolled off onto the sand with a "thump", face first with her ears half buried in the sand, hands sinking in it and copious amounts of it getting into her mouth.

"Bleh." Vixen sat up slowly, sticking her tongue out and spitting out sand. "Am I back in Orre so soon?" She muttered, and finally looked over at the mysterious figure who had prevented her from totally eating shit. And who was cheering. Vixen's ear flicked and she snorted, trying to comb sand out of her hair. "Mornin' hero, thanks for not letting me crash into a rock--"

The Umbreon faunus froze, and stood up quickly, a string of Orrean curses floating from her lips. "No no no no no no no I was supposed to find my twin brother no no no no no oh Arceus no no I fucked up I really fucked up--"

She tried to take a step until a wave of fatigue swept over her. She fell to her knees and groaned, squinting up at the sun. "Fuck," Vixen snarled at the sun, and then switched her gaze back to Alex. "Okay, new plan: we're digging a hole until the sun sets and then we're doing whatever we need to." As the Umbreon spoke, her ears dropped and the rings on her skin and fur slowly began to fade.

Hero? ...Yes, hero! Alex grinned at that, looking at the faunus girl excitedly from behind his mask. Hero!!!! Oh, he liked the sound of that!! Heroes were the ones people admired, the ones that got amazing stories written about them! They were the stars of all the tales Alex had heard and read about, and most importantly, they were the ones with an abundance of friends and loved ones. Oh, he'd been aiming for the mysterious masked phantom type before this, but, well, he supposed that he'd blown that already. So hero it was! Heroes got to have fun, too, it was a win-win!

"You're quite welcome!" he managed to say before she stood up in a panic. His eyebrows arched and his smile quickly faded, sensing that the girl was considerably unsettled. Ah, so she'd planned to find her brother, did she? Alex got to his feet considerably more calmly than the girl was at the moment, shaking sand out of his clothes and hair as best as he could. He was about to tell her not to worry, that he would help her find her brother, when she took a step forward and suddenly almost ate the ground for the second time in less than a minute. He rushed forward and knelt down, hands hovering over her in concern as her posture took on one of weakness.

"Waiting? I...don't think we can wait," he told her with a wince in his voice. "Who knows if there're enough relics for all the students here? ...I'm gonna guess you're not doing so well, what's wrong?" he asked worriedly, glancing at her fading markings.

Vixen and Drake

This man must have been an ice type of some sort, because even just his hands hovering over her skin caused goosebumps to break over Vixen's bare arms and for the girl to shiver, teeth chattering before she had half a mind to clamp her jaws shut and quell it. At least the heat beating over all of them meant that the other's coldness faded in less than a minute. Probably later she would find it refreshing... And it meant they wouldn't be lacking for water anytime soon. Vixen eyed the melting ramp and smacked her lips before she turned her attention back to Alex.

Her ears pinned back flat, tail curling around her. Fuck, she hated admitting to her weakness, but... She was as good as a fish out of water right now. Vixen pointed to the sun with a black claw, and then tapped her forehead, where her ring was light enough to just be a smudge of makeup. "'M an Umbreon," Vixen said. "Hard to tell now 'cause the sunlight is drainin' me like an opium den in a whorehouse." She hissed at the sun again before she started to stand, gripping Alex's arm for leverage and shivering once more but biting it back. "I get all my powers from the moon, and the sun just... makes me weak. Which is why we should find my brother 'cause he's an Espeon and he's the opposite of me."

The conviction in her voice faded when Alex mentioned the relics, and Vixen hugged herself, looking down the canyon ahead of them. "You don't mean... down there, do you?" She gulped. "... Fuck. Okay. I think I can help us scale down that way but..." She looked at Alex up and down, half a frown on her face. "We gotta get you prepared for the trek."

An Umbreon, hm...? Alex helped pull her to her feet as she described her weakness with an abundance of imagination, glancing towards the sky in the general direction of the sun. "Hmm....I see. That's certainly a problem," he sighed lightly. He glanced in the direction of the canyon he'd spotted from the sky when she mentioned it, humming thoughtfully. It was starting to get hot, and he was beginning to feel highly uncomfortable. Right now, this sort of setting was bad for the both of them, and they had to move somewhere a little more suitable as soon as he could. ...Not to mention, though, he was a little miffed that this girl couldn't fight right now. He wanted to at least assess her fighting abilities before they got stuck together.

Well, heroes always helped those who were in distress, too, right? Especially the damsels, apparently...

"I don't know if the relics are down there, per se...but if we get you out of direct sunlight, will that help?" he asked. She was his partner now, since they'd technically made eye contact - not that she would be able to tell, given his mask obscured his eyes. That being said, the more he knew about her, the better things would be for them. "I think it should be noted that we'll probably have to climb out of the canyon later, though. We have to get the relic and get back alive, after all." This was beginning to be a Situation, to say the least. How to make things go as smoothly as possible...?

An idea struck him like a flash of lightning, his body moving in accordance. "Oh, here's a game plan! We find the relic, wait until nightfall, and then get back to the school," he suggested with a confident smile. "I'm not sure if we can find your brother, but at least this way, we pass the test and you don't have to move around feeling all awful in the daylight." He nodded affirmatively, and glanced back to the canyon. "And we'll start down there, since you've suggested it. Er...what 'preparations' did I need to do to go down there?" he asked with a tilt of his head and apprehension in his voice.

Vixen and Drake

"You're telling me," Vixen growled, and immediately bit her lip and sighed. "It ain't your fault... Just... Fuck. I should have listened to Drake." If she had, she wouldn't be stuck in this mess. She couldn't even care about the sand in her hair and her tail dragging in the sand at the moment. Hopefully Drake would be okay...

She perked up as much as she could at Alex's next statement, trying to figure out his expression behind the mask and giving up. Her ears tried to stand at the idea of getting out of the sunlight but almost immediately drooped against her head again. "Getting out of the sunlight would, yeah. So would a nap but I doubt the creatures here would let me do that." A hollow laugh escaped her and died on her throat as she glanced again at the canyon. This was turning into a situation hairier than a drug lord's backside.

At least until Alex came up with a plan and Vixen brightened-- once again, as much as she could. It was more like she tried to brighten and just let her ears and tail droop again. "That works! It'll prevent us both from dyin' of dehydration as well... And I'm gonna take a wild guess that your typing is ice. Now as for survivin' in the desert..." Vixen grinned, flashing her fangs and jabbing a thumb claw into her chest. "Leave that to me, ice boy! I'm born and bred Orrean."

Vixen pulled her weapon from the sheath on her side, hidden by a few ribbons until she slid the black bladed khopesh into full view. She angled the blade and started to use the wicked looking point to cut bits of fabric off her outfit, grateful not that she had picked her midriff bearing loose clothes to wear... Well, the pants were loose. The top clung with its thick, ancient looking necklace. She walked over to the melting ice ramp and used her weapon to start breaking chunks of ice off, which she wrapped in the bits of fabric. "Cut away any fabric you don't need," Vixen said. "And wrap these chunks of ice in the fabric. When the ice melts it'll soak through the fabric and we can suck the fabric to get some water. Also..." Vixen glanced down at his shoes. "Do those bend at all? 'Cause if they don't, you'd better ditch them so we can climb down. Bare feet is better for rock climbin'. ... I mean, from my experiences with ruin climbing at any rate. And I'd recommend cutting some of your shirt away or ditching it all together. Get a cloth wrapped around your head too. It'll cut most of the sunlight beatin' on your skull like a pissy merchant."

Vixen faltered in her words, almost sinking to the ground but quickly righting herself and sucking on a piece of ice. Thank Arceus for the water.

"No."

Alex's response had come out abruptly and firmly without a second thought, and he wasn't about to go back on it. He wasn't going to rip apart his clothes, he wasn't going to take off his shirt, he wasn't going to ditch his shoes...absolutely not. His face had turned to stone, not exactly aggressive, but not as pleasant as before, either.

"I...trust what you're saying, but I'm not ripping apart my clothes, let alone taking my shirt off," he said carefully, purposefully tearing the edge from his voice as he spoke. "I have...personal reasons. Apologies." Hopefully that would be enough for her. He didn't want to offend, but he just wasn't comfortable doing any of those things. Instead, what he did was shed his coat, revealing his (unfortunately) black sleeveless turtleneck. He carefully tied his coat around his waist, making sure it wouldn't drag, then peeled off his gloves and stuffed those into his pocket, leaving his arms bare, save for the frosty bracers that held his ice dust crystals.

"Are...you sure it's necessary for us to have to walk and climb?" he asked slowly, glancing at the ice that was beginning to melt. "My semblance is cryokinesis, perhaps I could just re-use some of this ice I've already made, and make us a path over the sand? And...I believe I have more than enough dust to create some more ramps, like I did just now." He looked back at the girl, a pleasant smile taking place on his face once more. "Ah, but you have bare feet..." He trailed off, biting his lip in thought. "...Well, I don't mind giving you a piggy back ride, I suppose, so long as you're not opposed to a human ice pack." he smiled wryly. "I tend to, ah...get especially cold when using my semblance for extended periods of time."

Vixen and Drake

Vixen jumped from her work at the sudden harshness in the boy's voice, lifting her hands up defensively. "Woah there," Vixen said. "Hey, look, I told yah' I have a twin brother, you ain't got nothing that I probably haven't seen before, including the cactus and the tumbleweeds if you get my saying."

At least he was stripping... somewhat. Great, he appeared to be one of those prudish types, as Vixen was quick to take note of his terrible attire for such a setting. He had fabric to spare and then some, but... whatever. She wasn't prepared to get into a fight about this, especially since the more that she worked on chipping ice, the more fatigued she was getting. It took her a good few seconds of panting after chipping off another chunk of ice to register that her new partner had spoken again, and Vixen slid her gaze to him.

"Cryro-- I'm just... gonna assume that has something to do with ice," Vixen said. "At any rate..." She looked back at the canyon and frowned, tapping her chin with her claws. She smirked at the mention of a piggy back ride. "See, the thing I'm worried about is that your ice is already meltin' awfully fast, and... You can't use all your dust before we fight whatever's down there. See... what you can reuse for now, I think." She lifted her eyebrows. "And then you can give me that piggyback ride!"
