Launch Day-- MJAV [Vixen and Alex]; I can't 'sand' all the heat!

The Sand Canyon

It's so odd how much the landscape in the launch area varies. As Vixen and Alex fly, the trees give way to a small, hot desert. Everything in this area is rock and sediment, layered in sand. Running down this barren, flat landscape is a long, narrow canyon crack, and at the bottom appears to be... more sand. Sometimes, to any hunter's dismay, the sand will shift without warning-- a sign of life underneath.
The only noticeable landmarks are large, oddly black boulders, scattered around the desert. Some of the boulders are in fun shapes... Well, specifically, one fun shape. In amonst all the boring, circular boulders, some appear to be in the shape of suns. There appear to be a large pile of boulders down at the end of the canyon. Also, is it just me or is the sun shining even brighter in this area?

The GM is Katie. She will be rping mook (weak) Grimm during combat to get people used to working with a GM. The combat system will not be used for these first two threads. Please begin by RPing your landing strategy.

Have fun and happy Landing Day!

Alex smirked. Ah, it was always such a pleasure, proving peoples' expectations wrong. "Oh, it doesn't matter if it's melting, it just matters if it's all still there."

He turned his attention to the rapidly melting ice, feeling the sun beat down on him with new vigor. It'd gotten hot very quickly, something that wouldn't bode well for him at all. If he could get this working, though, then he could at least make things easier for the both of them. He took a wide, low stance, looking as if he were ready to engage in martial arts in some cheesy kung-fu movie. Palms flat, he took a moment to grasp the entirety of the ice ramp with his aura and semblance.

He suddenly clenched his fists, and a crackling could be heard as the water on the ice suddenly froze again. "Better," Alex murmured, relaxing his hands again. He exhaled, then inhaled deeply as he focused. He wasn't used to manipulating large objects, partially because he didn't have to, and partially because doing so wasn't as...elegant, not to mention it was tiring.

His fingers curled, clawing into an invisible object as he began to focus on getting the solid chunk of ice to mold into something more malleable. The large ramp slowly began to shift as it got pulled forward, losing its shape and turning into something a little rougher, a little spikier, a little more raw. Like a snake, it moved through the air, directed by Alex's semblance, coiling around him once in a large arc before it was drawn upwards behind Alex and pointed in the direction of the canyon.

Alex huffed and puffed, pausing for a brief moment before grunting with effort as he flung his arms downwards, as if throwing something onto the ground with force. The ice violently moved as he did, crashing into the sand in front of him and forming a sizable, solid shape. With that, Alex re-rooted himself and drew back his hand, the other balling into a fist at his side. He threw his hand forward, his open palm stopping short of the block of ice. The ice shot off into the distance with more speed than it should have had, leaving a solid path of ice behind it. It shrunk rapidly, eventually disappearing, though whether it went into the horizon or shrunk before it could do so was hard to tell.

The hunter-in-training broke his stance and put his hands on his knees, gasping for breath from the effort. Sweat dripped off his nose, uncomfortably dampening his clothes, and he couldn't help but feel unbearably, uncomfortably hot. No more semblance usage for a while, hopefully they wouldn't encounter any grimm just yet.

One hand still on his knee, he peeled his shirt from his chest and, with one more frivolous use of his semblance, froze all the moisture on his hair and body, giving his skin the appearance of frozen veins, and his hair stiff and pointed as opposed to neat and tidy.

"Okay, let's. Move. Before grimm. Gather," he panted.

The Grimm had gathered, indeed.

The crash of the ice on the sand had reached the ears of more than just the two hunters. There was a saying once that 'walls have ears'. It was supposed to be a metaphor for other people and the risk of eavesdropping, but in this case, in this desert, the walls literally had ears. Or, in this case, the floor. As the two adventurers attempted to regain their breath, the sand began to shake and come alive.

Out of the earth crawled Diglett Grimm. They pushed their way through the sediment, swimming through it like water. Blind and screeching, they darted towards the adventurers. They were a little ways away though... Looks like you've got a head start.

Vixen and Drake

Someone was trying to show off, though to what audience Vixen wasn't sure. She was half delirious from staying under direct sunlight for so long and didn't have the energy to clap or applaud or tap dance or whatever it was that her new partner expected from her. She was about to mention that perhaps Alex could have completed his task in less moves when she noticed him panting, sweat dripping from his skin before he froze it.

Despite that, watching the frozen water move through the air like a sidewinder was impressive. She just didn't have time to voice that while Alex looked about ready to collapse.

Vixen frowned. "You look half dead," she said. "For fuck's sake drink some water and then we'll--"

A rumble. Not from the ice.

The Umbreon faunus's eyes went wide as the sand began to crawl and move, goosebumps of dirt before they broke and manifested into dark, hellish shapes. Her old favorite enemy: Grimm.

"SO MUCH FOR THAT PLAN!" Vixen hollered, gripping Eclipse and rushing toward Alex. "GO GO GO GO GO!!! NEITHER OF US CAN FIGHT THEM!!"

Alex was about to retort that being tired was a thing that happened when he had to move copious amounts of ice by himself, as opposed to creating it with the help of ice dust as a catalyst. His words stopped before they could even reach his throat, interrupted by a rumbling. He didn't have to look to know what was happening, but he did anyway, spotting exactly what he had expected to see: Grimm.

God. Damnit.

He didn't need to be told to run. He started running as fast as his tired legs would carry him, jumping into the air to allow his skates to click underneath his feet. An expert landing followed, and he was off, but not too quickly so as not to leave his teammate behind. He purposely fell behind, so that she was in front of him, then in a sudden burst of speed rushed forward.

"Hold onto your butt!" he shouted as he hastily scooped her up, one arm behind her back and the other under her knees. He skated as fast as he could, limbs screaming from strain but his mind overriding it for fear of death.

"Hold onto my-- WHAT?!" Vixen screeched as before she knew it, ice boy was behind her and despite his lithe build, had somehow managed to scoop Vixen up into his arms, holding her close to his chest in a position that under any other circumstance she would have kicked and clawed at. Instead, she did the next best thing as one hand gripped reflexively onto the tip of her tail, and her ears pinned flat against her skull.

"Does my tail count?!" Vixen barked before she looped her free arm around Alex's shoulders, pulling Eclipse out and draping her arm and blade across his back, pressing for support as well as getting a few inches to swing her khopesh around. Just because she wasn't attacking with moonlight and was half dead meant that the blade wasn't any less sharp.

... It just meant that all she had between them and a wave of Diglett grimm was, essentially, a curving, sharp stick. If they got out of this alive, Vixen was going to let Drake lecture her for a week.

The two hunters were pursued by the Diglett as they swam through the sand, but it seemed that the speed of Alex's skates could keep them at a safe enough distance. For now. One Diglett Grimm, smaller than the others but much quicker on its... feet (?) pushed forward from the back, catching up quickly to the running students. It seemed to be attracted to the glowing of Vixen's rings, dim as it was in the harsh sunlight.

Releasing a harsh screech, it reached its claws out towards Alex's back. It only caught air for now, but the distance between the two parties was slowly closing in.

Ah, shit, Alex could feel the talons of the grimm whiff the air close to his back. His body burned, both from use and from heat, and his mind didn't feel as sharp as it usually did. The sand stretched on, and the canyon in the distance only seemed to get a little bit closer. He'd just spike the damn monster, but his use of his semblance had left him drained. It had been a stupid move. Note to self, never do anything like that ever again, because in the wild one is never safe.

"Any chance you've got a ranged weapon?" he panted over the sound of the snarling grimm and his skates against the ice. He'd love to just spike the thing, but he wasn't sure he had enough energy for that just yet. He just needed some time, first.
