Mitch stood at the door to the office of the faunus history teacher, a strange and unusual pit of... something, forming in their stomach. The feeling that faded into existence around them wasn't something Mitch was familiar with, as they hesitated to knock on the door to signal their arrival to the professor inside. It was only the 2nd day of class. Mitch had raised their hand to ask a question, perhaps to hold a discussion about what they were told vs. what the Kalosian students were told. And the results of said conversation had landed them here, with a strict appointment to the professors office. In reality, Mitch had just been informed something different, so they wanted to make sure that the professors version of the story was the right one. And much to Mitch's own chagrin and embarrassment, it was. Supposedly. the students. They were all laughing at the event or the happenstance of the whatever. It was uncomfortable. This was uncomfortable. That was the word for it. Mitch slowly rapped on the professors door, after watching the last student leave the classroom. Mitch remembered the one thing their prior instructors had told them to do in case of unease. This was no battle, but the slow and steady rise and fall of Mitch's chest made it feel like they were preparing for one. |

It had barely been 24 hours since the launch and LeRoux hadn't a chance to congratulate his daughter let along speak to her about her worrisome partner. Professing was taking up a lot more time then he had anticipated and as the new faunus history teacher, had a lot of classes to prepare which was frustratingly time consuming. It was times like this he wished he had Koemi or Sabine's foresight to just.. cheat the lesson plans. Unfortunately the horned faunus had not been blessed with such abilities. Antlers standing proud over his already towering figure, LeRoux pushed himself from his desk and gave a quick glance around his untidy office after the knocks at the door. It was most likely Mitch, dead on time. He opened the door, staring down to the KSFS student disguised in a Kalos Academy uniform. "Come in Mitch," he said professionally, holding the door open long enough for the student to enter before returning to his desk, clearing away some papers to get a clear view across the table. "Now I understand you're under the impression I brought you here to discuss your comments in class," the Swasbuck began, interlacing his fingers on the desk, right pinky finger nervously tapping against the opposite knuckle, "Which is an issue I will come to. There is something I would like to discuss with you first, off the record. Not as your Professor but as a father." LeRoux inhaled, hoping the direction of the conversation was not too out of line, "As you're well aware, no doubt, your partner's surname is Peridot... as is mine. That is because she is my daughter. Now, Mitch.. I'm aware of your history and personally, it feels like your past interests conflict with the values of Kalos Academy, more specifically it conflicts with what my daughter is. You're her partner and Sycamore wouldn't have allowed you entry if he didn't deem you a..." Threat? ".. beneficial member to the Kalos Academy family. Which leads me to your comments today. I'm not sure what exactly you have been taught in Kanto but here faunus stand as equals alongside humans. Just as I trust you will stand as an equal beside my daughter against the Grimm threat and the war as a whole." The Professor swivelled on his chair, fingers tapping along the bookshelves covering the entire wall before pulling out a large leather-bound book. He turned and placed it in front of Mitch, elbows on the edge of the table and leaning in slightly, "This is the newest book I own on the Faunus Human wars. It was written specifically to be as unbiased as possible. These are the hard facts." He knocked the cover with a few hard taps of his finger, "I would advise you read through this and then we can come back and discuss when you're finished. I'm a lecturer but I'm not here to indoctrinate you or anyone, Mr. Barnes. I'm interested to hear your opinions after you've poured over this. I would also advise perhaps keeping any questions you have in my class until you can speak to me privately. You've had a very different education to the majority of students here and teenagers can be cruel and don't tend to view things in perspective. I don't want you to feel like you're going to get laughed at for asking an innocent question." "Let me help you, Mitch. You wouldn't be at Kalos if you didn't want to learn, after all." This did not go how they were expecting at all. But the mans concerns were valid, given Mitch's own personal history. Mitch shuffled in their chair uneasily as the man went on and on, about his daughter and the academies values, and the direction of faunus history. Mitch's eyes widened a little when the tome of information was put down in front of them. A hand reached to open it to begin going over the contents, but Mitch paused. They'd need to respond to the professor first. That was only adaquate. "First off I would like to apologize for any unease I have caused in being paired with your daughter. I am well aware of where I am from and what that represents to the rest of the world." Mitch began, bowing their head to Leroux in apology,"However I, unlike many other KSFS students actually have an opinion on faunus, other than just believing what I'm told. I owe that opinion, one of my admittedly few, to a treasured family member of mine. I'm sure you've had a 'Melody Barnes' in your class? She is my cousin, and her father is the one who gave me my beliefs regarding faunus. The reason behind it is... A long story and I do not wish to get into the details but..." Mitch trailed off as their eyes fell to the desk and to the book, almost as if it was representative of the 'sins' of their own country. Were they sins? Only time would tell. "Rest assured your daughter is nowhere near harm from me. She is my partner and I fully intend to guard that partnership and all it represents with my life, just as I was taught." Mitch offered a typical Kantonese salute, a sign of promise. "I simply refuse to go back on my word on this. As for the text." Mitch's hands fell to the tome in front of them, eyes pouring over it curiously. "I..." Mitch paused as they searched for the right word to convey the proper emotions, "Appreciate your offer. And I will have this read... Most likely within the week, if other schoolwork doesn't get in the way. I wish to see for myself the differences in curriculum between the two continents. Permission to come back to your office and converse with you about the differences professor?" Mitch asked, looking up at the teacher. |

LeRoux sat back in his chair, watching Mitch carefully as they spoke. They conducted themselves surprisingly well and the Swasbuck controlled his expressions as not to give away any of his conflicting emotions. If only he could go into school files and swap Sabine's partner. Perhaps a nice ground type? Of course that wasn't an option. There were so many rules about professionalism around students... being a Professor was haaard. "I'm admittedly relieved to hear it," LeRoux nodded with a small, forced smile, trying to remember which one was Melody. He had barely remembered three students from each class let alone all of them. Mitch, of course, he'd remembered. "I'm glad to hear you have an interest in the book. It's quite, well, its not as interesting as some of the other history books which try to construct an entertaining story while read. Like I said this is hard facts which.. I have a feeling you'll appreciate more." LeRoux felt extremely vulnerable as he spoke to this child, a third his age. They had a maturity beyond their years. They were almost.. robot-like. As if they'd had the personality beaten out of them. "Like anyone else you have the right to come and knock on my door at any time. I'm really quite interested to hear your opinions after you've read it. Perhaps you'll be able to help my perceptions on Kanto as well. I only know... what I've heard." Mitch looked at the professor in front of them, a small smile forming on their lips as they nodded. "Appreciated, Professor LeRoux. I expect you'll be seeing a lot of me. I... Fully intend to take advantage of the freedoms I have while at Kalos Academy." Because Mitch knew that if their father got pissy and dragged them back to Kanto, life would go back to normal. Life in Kalos was very abnormal, but the degree of freedom Mitch had over their own actions was both horrifying and intensely satisfying. It only took a few seconds before something near passive shock settled in on Mitch's face. "I just realized. Saying I am related to Melody gives me no credibility." Mitch pondered, wondering if they should tell this story to LeRoux as well. "Professor? Would you mind if I told you exactly why I am here? I believe that will clairify some things and perhaps set your mind at ease. I've already told Sycamore and Diantha, although more under orders than anything else." |

The Swasbuck gave a small chuckle, opening a draw and placing a small bowl of mint chews on the desk. He took one for himself before nodding to Mitch as an offering. He chewed over the former KSFS student's words literally and figuratively, wondering how so the lives in Kalos and Kanto differed. They kept mentioning freedom. Was Kanto a prison or something. He stifled a shiver, glad that Hoenn had never felt like a prison, no matter how isolated Tori Village was. LeRoux's eyes widened slightly. He wasn't expecting Mitch to open up so readily, "Of course," he agreed, "I you think it would also ease your mind to get it off your chest. Perhaps something to keep in mind and tell Sabine one day too. I know she can be a hard nut to crack regarding things that don't directly concern her... though, you are her partner so if that's not direct I'm not sure what is." "But I'm waffling," the Swasbuck chuckled, picking out another mint chew and pulling off the wrapping, "Please tell me your story, Mitch." |

Mitch simply nodded in response to the professors request. They took a mint out of the bowl, deftly unwrapped it and chewed on it while they thought of where to start. The wrapper went straight into their pocket. Mitch's posture stiffened a little as their eyes continued to search for a good starting location, because everything they had wanted to say required some kind of prior knowledge. "I... suppose I should start by saying that KSFS is a much different school. Combat training starts earlier there, and as you and I'm sure many are aware, KSFS and KSFA have not always been the schools they are now. I was among the first class brought into the 'new' KSFS, established in the wake of the Human-Faunus war. Kanto for all intents and purposes believes it lost that war, and believes that the loss is perhaps the most embarassing thing that's happened to it in recent history. So they begun training us to make sure that never happens again. I could go on and on about what actually goes on inside of KSFS, but I suppose it's simplest to start with the fact that we are trained to be soldiers, not people." Mitch took a deep breath as they searched the professors eyes for some kind of response. It didn't matter right now. "In fact, it's been so long since I've begun making decisions on my own, orienting my own schedule has been both confusing and enlightening. Nevertheless, there is a certain way they handle the students at KSFS and KSFA that makes them, and all of the ordinary civilians not think we are human. When we traveled for Kantonese combat tournaments, we were to always travel as a unit, hoods drawn, and forbidden to speak to anyone. Failure to obey these rules was met with stiff punishments. And the punishments were never uniform. I suppose you can say that a lot of our core motivations were a mixture of supposed glory and fear. If we actually graduated from the program, we'd be on our way to becoming some of the most important individuals in the Kantonese military..." Mitch realized that they'd been speaking for awhile without actually getting to the core of the story they had wanted to tell. As such, they took another mint, and then reoriented themselves. "That being all necessary backstory for what I actually need to say. My family, and subsequently Melody's family was destroyed by the human faunus war. Everyone in our family, sans her parents were soldiers. Her parents were hunters. My mother died, several of my aunts, uncles, cousins... And those that were left alive were ruined by the emotional devastation. I myself was not quite old enough to comprehend the gravity of the situation, and I still do not think I have a full grasp on it. However, my mom, prior to her death, made my dad make one promise. That every summer out of school, he'd send me to live with Melody and Uncle Richard, and while Uncle Richard had been recently sickly from the grief of losing his wife to a rouge grimm during a mission, he was always very kind to me and Melody. Far kinder than anyone else in my family. After I became a KSFS student, it's safe to say that those two were the only ones who treated me like a human being. Like they weren't afraid of me. Uncle Richard has recently been... Going to the hospital more often, and he's been regulated to a wheelchair. I have no idea why he decided to send Melody all the way out here for school, but I followed her for two reasons. One, when Uncle Richard passes on, Melody will have her entire support group crumble around her. And she's never been particularly good at... making friends with people. I care about her and want to make sure she's okay, because if I'm not around to do it, nobody else will. And two, she never actually listened to Uncle Richard's most important message, the one that despite all my training at KSFS I believe. The faunus are not at fault for our families destruction. They aren't at fault for the war. They're not monsters or savages or... Anything that the majority of Kanto seems to believe they are. They are simply people reacting in a way that people do when attacked. Melody... Doesn't believe this. So if I can find a way to get her to listen to her fathers message, than I've done my job." Mitch looked down at the book apprehensively, tapping their finger on their leg impatiently. ... That was a lot. |
