Vixen and Drake

Note: This thread takes place before the dance

The pink slip was clutched between Vixen's claws, shaking in her grip. The Umbreon faunus had her ears pinned back, tears threatening to stream down her cheeks, but she would not cry. She would not cry, because if she did, she would have failed Drake, and failed everything that the twins fought for.

But today was the third time she had been written up for her sparring. The fear in the eyes of her fellow students, the way the the teachers would grab her... The teachers knew, of course, where she came from. She saw their pitying looks every time her and Drake would step through the classroom doors. She saw how Drake was favored because of the pitiful air he put on, how everyone would nod and smile when Vixen couldn't understand something, bereft of a formal education.

And now, now, the only thing she knew in this world was being questioned.

Vixen pressed the pink slip to her chest, the words burned into her: "Displaying use of excessive force during sparring sessions. Seems to lack a sense of mercy. Put under extreme caution."

Strike one.

She couldn't afford to get any more. She couldn't. She couldn't.

Vixen sunk her fangs into her lower lip and resolved never to tell Drake about her mistake. She heard footsteps down the hall, but too concerned with not wanting to cry, she couldn't look up.

“Ven, dame tu boca~ Mi boca linda, mi boca chula, tu boca loca, tu boca…boca.”

Jason hummed along under his breath to the music bumping out of his headphones, bag slung over his shoulder as he headed towards the cafeteria from the gym. He had worked up something of an appetite on the treadmill and wanted to get away before they attributed the overloaded machine to Jason who had maxed it out with his semblance.

“Esta boca, esta boc-ooph sorry there…oh hey Vix!”

Jason nearly ran headlong into his teammate who appeared to be waiting outside the principal’s office, demerit slip clutched in her fingers and looking none too pleased about it.

“They give you detention for bein’ too fly or somethin’?” Jason asked, popping off his headphones and leaning against the wall next to her.

Oh, no.

Vixen tried not to blanch when the chipper voice of the fire horse faunus reached her ears. She had to be thankful that her partner hadn't shown up... The hero would just try to fix this situation, somehow, and Vixen wasn't ready to tell Alex about her past. Fuck, she wasn't ready to tell Jason about her past either.

Or why every time she ever sparred, she tried to rip her opponent's throats out.

A nervous smile cracked on her face, though she couldn't look at Jason for too long. "H-hey," Vixen mumbled, and then froze when Jason mentioned the pink slip.

Vixen crunched the slip tighter in her hand, swallowing tightly. Too fly, as if. She wished it was too fly. She curled up on the chair she was sitting on, tail coiling around her lap. "H-ha," she said with a cracking voice. "Somethin' like that, sure."

The silence hung, and Vixen didn't want to break it. Apparently Jason hadn't heard about her sparring with students... Or missed them entirely.

It would be nice if that was the case.

Whatever it was it wasn't good. The silence hung between them for as long as Jason could bear it, waiting for her to maybe say what was wrong.

When she didn't, Jason decided to break the silence with something hopefully helpful.

"Ahhhh don't even worry about it," Jason said as casually as he could muster. "What's school without gettin' writ up a few times, right? 'Sides not like it was anything too serious, right? If it was y'all wouldn't still be sittin' here now would ya?"

Unless they were waiting to expel her in which case Jason might as well have shoved his boot in his mouth. He had heard rumors to be sure that Vixen could be...eager in the ring but he never put much stock in them...until just then.

"This uh...wouldn't happen to have anythin' to do with sparrin' would it?" Jason said with a small wince, wondering if he was breaching something he ought not to.

Vixen and Drake

Vixen's face paled as Jason spoke of sparring, and the Umbreon faunus was doing a piss poor job of hiding her anxiety at the moment. She looked down at her feet regardless, messing with the edge of her skirt and poking her shoes into the tile.

She said nothing for a while, vainly hoping that Jason would go away but he didn't. Of course he didn't. He was too nice of a guy-- right now Vixen wished he could be a jerk.

She finally swallowed, and mumbled. "Y-yeah," she said. "It is."

And before she could stop herself, she spoke.

"I don't... understand! I'm doing what they want! I fight when they ask! But.. The fighting here, it's... It's not-- it's not like home. It's just..." Vixen cut herself off and swallowed. "... I don't know. Shit. I don't know what they want from me. Or... or even if... I can give them what they want."

He figured.

"Yeah I...I figured," Jason said, scratching the back of his neck. It may not have been how he would have done things but he could hardly hold Vixen accountable for being a little...rough with her fellow hunters. After all, if they couldn't survive her, how could they hope to survive Grimm?

Apparently the school didn't see things the same way.

"I reckon they want y'all to fight but not quite so...rough," Jason said, tilting his head back and forth. "What they want is kinda muddled anyway since we're supposed to be trainin' for life-or-death struggles and stuff. What did they say anyway?"

Vixen and Drake

Vixen couldn't look at Jason, though she sensed how nervous he was and caught him scratching his neck out of the corner of her eye. Part of her felt irritation well up-- if Jason was nervous, how the fuck did he think she felt right now? She tempered her first reaction, crumpling the paper up again in her fist.

"They just said that I needed to... calm down in my fighting," Vixen mumbled, her ears pinning back and tail lashing. "Which doesn't make any damn sense! I'm fighting like I know how to fight! It's not like I can change that! What the fuck do they want me to do, sand down my claws and put a muzzle on?! It's life and death and that's what I do-- I fight for my goddamn life!"

She didn't realize she had been yelling until she caught the looks of lingering students. Her breath shook and she balled her hands into fists, feeling her claws prick her palms. "S-sorry," she said, quietly. "I'm not... yellin' at you. I'm just... I can't screw this up, you know? If I do, I--"

She cut herself off abruptly. Jason was a practical stranger. Troubled, Vixen looked at the ground. "Sorry," she said again, lamely.

"Calm down while still bein' good enough to kill Grimm, right?" Jason chuckled. "Only so much y'all can do to other students before people start drawin' lines which is why I hope our spooky leader decides to take us out Grimm stompin' sometime soon so we can get some real practice in."

Between Jonas and Vixen, it was clear that hunters fighting hunters wasn't going to accomplish much in the scheme of things...as fond as he was fighting in the Pit.

"Grandma always said that in practicin' you gotta reserve only the strength used in an application, not the technique," Jason said solemnly. "Unless y'all learned how to fight in, shit, a fuckin' battlefield or somethin' I would reckon y'all would be better off fallin' back on basics when up against our squishier classmates. Not everyone's as badass as we are and we gotta make sure they don't get all boo-boo'd up."

"Y'all want to practice with me sometime?" Jason asked with a small shrug. "Promise I won't go cryin' to the teachers if you rough me up a lil. Been workin' the Castelia Amateur Fighting League since I was fifteen so I'm used to takin' a coupla knocks here or there. Reckon most of these kids have never taken a punch in their lives."

"Ha!" Vixen couldn't help her guffaw when Jason mentioned their "leader". "Look, Mordi is great and all but... Do you really think he's ever gonna do shit with us? I still ain't sure how the hell he became a leader over... any'a us... Or if he even can lead." She frowned, crossing her arms and puffing her cheek out with her tongue. "I ain't about to rely on him for water, as we say in Orre."

Vixen's ear flicked as Jason continued to talk. She was half tempted to ignore some of his words, still battling how much she was going to reveal to the Ponyta faunus when he said those words: learning to fight in a battlefield. It struck Vixen like a blow, the fur along her tail puffing out and her skin draining of color. She fought her words, wondering how the hell Jason knew when the subject changed and Vixen latched onto it immediately before she could consider the implications.

"Y-yeah! That would... I mean... that would be great!" Wait, what did she just sign up for? Oh, whatever. She had to shrug off the haunted look in her eyes before questions were asked. "You, uh, don't mind fightin' late at night, do you? As you know, I... kinda work off the moon and all, so..." She paused. "At least I wouldn't be a total danger to you since you're a fire type. If you were a ghost or somethin' we'd have to think of a better deal."

The spindly little doll guy had Jason vexed as well. On one hand, he certainly seemed to be the most even keel out of the four of them and seemed to have a good head literally screwed onto his neck. At the same time, Jason looked at other teams in which the leaders more obviously led and he wondered if theirs was lacking something.

"I reckon he could manage you a glass of water in a pinch," Jason chuckled. "Maybe not fancy sparkling water or water with them little fruit chunks floatin' in it but glass of water...maybe even two. Y'all would need to hit up your partner for the ice though and...ah shit I think I beat this story to death."

"But yeah any day or night I'm good to go!" Jason snickered, scratching the back of his neck. "Not such an early bird like my brother so not much of a shift to help you out...s'long as we got some kinda light or somethin'. Not partial to the whole blindfold trainin' methods to say the least."

Especially given Jonas' brush with his uncle's particular breed of blindfold training that sent Jonas to the hospital once or twice in the past.

"Long as you don't bite my head off," Jason said, lightly nudging Vixen's shoulder with his fist.
