Another year, another forgotten birthday. LeRoux opened the top draw of his desk to look at his Scroll, a hopeful smile when he saw one new message. The history Professor tapped into the message and let out a disappointed sigh when it was just his brother. Yo brotha, hope you're not being too much of a square. Remember 1989 when you used to be fun? Happy birthday, keep it tight! - Thio "If you consider waking up in our mother's bed in a puddle of your own vomit, sure. Loads of fun," LeRoux muttered to himself, placing the scroll back into the drawer, hand moving to hover over a small bottle of scotch with a white bow around the neck. One little sip couldn't hurt. The Sawsbuck plucked out the bottle and unscrewed the top, tipping back the liquid as there was a knock on the door to his office. He spluttered, frantically glancing around the desk before hiding the uncapped bottle behind a small flower pot beside a pile of files. "Come in," LeRoux wheezed, giving his chest a few hard raps. Leave it to her to leave her damned book in her desk. After class, she had made a beeline to meet Tilly at the Amphitheater for practice and completely forgot the textbook she needed for the assignment due the next day. Gym bag thumping on her back, sword still sticking out of her waist and hair wet from the shower, Marianne kicked the door open, storming towards her desk and pulling the wretched textbook out from under the desk. "Piss and vinegar, there it is," Marianne said loudly, shoving the book into her bag before realizing she was not alone in the room as she thought she was. "Oh...professor," Marianne said, coughing into her hand. "I did...did not notice you there..." |

Of all the students which could have barged into the classroom between periods, he was glad to see it was the Dratini. "Marianne," he said with a smile, relaxing in his chair and leaning forward with his hands clasped on the desk, "I never got a chance to ask you, will you be making an appearance at the faunus rights rally on Saturday? We're marching from North Boulevard to Centrico Plaza, where will be picketing and getting signatures for our petition." He made a triumphant fist, "Mayor Claudette will be grasping at straws next time she meets with the committee." LeRoux gathered up a couple of fliers from the event, holding them out for Marianne to take, "If you helped hand these out to your peers it would be a huge help to--" He paused, giving his student a glance up and down, "Sorry, are you in a hurry?" |

"Fliers...yes, yes, I...that was this weekend?" Marianne said, shaking her head. "Sorry, I've been distracted lately." Marianne stepped forward, taking the fliers with a small glance before stuffing them in her bag. She didn't pay much attention to it now; LeRoux's presence in the Faunus community was beyond reproach so she didn't doubt it was important. "When has grasping at straws ever stopped a politician before?" Marianne said with a dry chuckle. "If you wanted to do some good you'd run that charlatan out of town while you're at it. Worked in Virbank; works anywhere." "I just stopped by for my book," Marianne said, tapping the spine with one finger. "I think I need to have words with the author on the latest chapter...though I shouldn't expect anything approaching fairness this close to the damned war, should I?" Marianne glanced at the bottle on the desk before glancing back to the professor. "Is it a holiday or something?" Marianne asked with a raised eyebrow and the corner of her mouth twitching just a little. |

"I appreciate it," LeRoux smiled as his student took the fliers. He leant back in his chair, rubbing a hand over his stubbly chin. He supposed she had a point. He'd always been accused of being too idealistic. He made a face in defeat. Someone has to be the dreamer! Otherwise they'll never have any chance of being achieved. Was equal rights for both human and faunus really much of a dream though? It should be a basic right. "Monti rarely minces words," LeRoux said with a half-smile, glancing at the book she was holding, "That's why I had it added to the curriculum. It's confronting but it's honest. Before we had Van Stone's version on the war. I would never trust a human's word over a faunus. She sugar-coats everything too much." The Sawsbuck glanced to his opened scotch bottle. Perhaps not the best hiding place... "My birthday actually," he admitted with a small chuckle, "My wife seems to have forgotten again. I shouldn't put so much importance on birthdays but I'd still like to enjoy them before I'm fifty. It's not her fault, really. Once I got a from her call in the middle of April wishing me a happy 86th birthday." He snorted and shook his head fondly, "I was happy to know I'm not going to die in some freak accident before I reach old age but it was still a slap in the face." "I...see," Marianne said, idly smacking her lips. She had thought it was something more...easily manageable. But the way LeRoux seemed to be talking about it, it sounded like it was something that happened more regularly than he would have liked. "This...is a regular occurrence then?" Marianne said, making a small face as realization hit her. "Wait a moment...your wife has, Psychic abilities, am I right? I don't mean to presume; only that I've...spoken with your daughter at one point and unless she's adopted she must share her mother's affinity, no?" Marianne scratched her arm awkwardly. "Perhaps she...believes she already wished you your birthday for this year?" Marianne said with a weak chuckle. "I mean, you wouldn't spend all day shouting "happy birthday" at someone if you had already said it, would you?" |

"Xatu," LeRoux rectified with a warm smile before waving his hand semi-dismissively, "Don't worry, your deductions were correct. It's nice to see someone is paying attention amidst all this madness." He placed his chin in a hand with a sigh, "Between you and me, part of me hoped Sabine would have taken my DNA so she wouldn't be plagued with the Foresight semblance. It's easier to control when you're younger, before all the visions start moulding together into one continuous stream." LeRoux appreciated how much Marianne cared, suggesting justifications on Koemi's behalf. "That's most likely what has happened. She sees so much of the future and the past continuously, it's difficult to remember what day it even is for her." "No wonder Sabine is so frightened to go through puberty," he went on, absent-mindedly looking at the scotch bottle and scratching the edge of the sticker, "She got her Everstone stolen too. The original one was a family heirloom, to buy one outright is more than my Faunus salary can handle..." LeRoux suddenly realised he was talking to a student and not another Professor. Albeit a very mature student but he didn't want to be spilling any of Sabine's secrets on her behalf. The Sawsbuck threw a guilty hand over his mouth, "Sorry," he scratched the bottom of his antlers nervously, "I didn't mean to go and say all that, I don't want to bore you with information that doesn't concern you." |

"Right," Marianne said, shaking her head. With over seven hundred...variations of Faunus in the world, Marianne couldn't expect to have every single one of them memorized. It was strange then that they were painted with the same breath so often...or maybe just banded together for convenience and protection. "I can't imagine what it must be like to fear evolution...though I suppose it must vary from family to family." It was something she considered from time to time; how much the variations among Faunuses were (or should be) emphasized. Whether her family were driven, temperamental, and forceful because they had (as her Nana was fond of saying) the blood of dragons flowing in their veins or whether they would be just as driven, temperamental, and forceful if they were Sawsbuck or Arcanine...or human. Marianne snorted derisively at that last thought, shaking her head for a moment before snapping her eyes back to LeRoux with a concerned frown. "Stolen?" Marianne said, right hand unconsciously resting on the hilt of her sword. "By whom? Did she see them? Who could have done that?" She could hardly conceive that another Faunus student would steal something so precious and personal. It was an unspoken code of conduct that someone who was wearing an Everstone had good reason to as many Faunus relished the change that came with evolution. They were rare...and valuable as well. She could only conclude that it was either a desperate young Faunus student or an unscrupulous human looking to pawn the treasure for their own gain. "It concerns me greatly when our students are being stolen from," Marianne said simply. "Once people start getting into their heads that they can steal from us and get away with it, they'll just keep doing it." She couldn't say she knew Sabine well (or even liked her much from the brief encounter she had with her). But something like this needed to be put to a stop quickly. Besides, LeRoux was one of her favorite professors, unapoagetically idealistic and a strong figure in their community. If she could do something to strengthen that community, she would. "Do you know how much a replacement would be?" |

"I'm not sure but she was very distraught. She only came to the realisation after her first Xatu vision. They're usually unprompted. She's used to being in full control on her Foresight so I can imagine how daunting an experience it would have been." He thought back to Koemi's transition into a Xatu, a sad smile tugging at his lips. A lot changed after that. "I agree," LeRoux hummed, "Though I am still optimistic that this is just an isolated incident. There are a myriad of possible reasons.. I only hope she's not lying to me. She's been..." Different since they arrived at Kalos. He could barely believe the reports of some of her antics from the other Professors. LeRoux tightly interlaced his fingers, "It's really nothing you need to be worrying about, Marianne. You're one of my most valued defenders of justice but.. I shouldn't have even shared this information with a student." The Sawsbuck firmly ran his hands over his face as if it would wipe clean all that he had told Marianne, "I trust you'll put all this out of your mind. I don't want you distracted from your studies and training." He gestured to her gym bag, "Wouldn't want to hold you up, either." Edited by Sabine and Tilly, Oct 3 2015, 06:07 PM.

"Better to be pessimistic and pleasantly surprised occasionally than to be optimistic and routinely disappointed," Marianne said, shaking her head. She could tell that the professor was not going to give her any more information on the subject. She filed it away for the time being, offering LeRoux a small nod. "I understand, sir," Marianne said, privately wondering if that "defender of justice" thing was patronizing her or not. "Would you...prefer to drink alone?" Marianne said, wondering if she should leave while at the same time not really wanting to leave LeRoux to a bottle of alcohol and an empty classroom. |
