The Celadon Thorn | The Aquarian Paragon

"This isn't like my Matilda at all," Suraiya protested, giving her husband a hopeless look. Rajvir sat deep in his seat across the Headmaster's desk, silent and in deep consideration. "I appreciate you making your way all the way out to the Academy, Mr. and Mrs. Pradhan," Sycamore apologised, rubbing his thumb firmly into his palm, "I wish it were under better circumstances." Tilly hadn't looked up from the ground since she had finished explaining the events of the incident at Route 13. Finding it hard to twist the truth in front of her parents, the paragon dobbed in Chloe for being the mastermind behind the expedition but took responsibility for encouraging them to explore the cave rather than calling for help. "Why was she even allowed to enter Grimm-infested Routes without supervision?" Suraiya demanded, adjusting the collar of her salwar kameez with irritation. "We're looking into it Mrs. Pradhan," Diantha cut in, standing in the far side of the room, overseeing the meeting. Sycamore exhaled through his nose, "And while we do that, we need to discuss Matilda's punishment. While the Vice Principle has put expulsion on the table as a possible consequence, I feel that it is a little too harsh in this instance. If Miss. Matilda can promise that this was only a one time err in judgement then I will write her a formal first and final warning." There was a long pause before Rajvir's rumbly deep voice cut through the silence, "Matilda?" "I promise," Tilly said, wiping tears away with the back of her hand. "And if we decide to pull her from the Academy?" Rajvir asked, causing Tilly to sharply look up with a sobbing gasp. "Then that is your choice to make," Diantha answered firmly, casting a stone cold glance to the student who quickly avert her gaze. Suraiya looked to Rajvir, a wordless conversation happening between them. "We--" "I believe it would be unwise to pull Miss. Matilda from the program," Sycamore quickly intoned, earning an unimpressed wide eyed stare from his Vice Principle, "While her academic and practical skills need work, she has shown a fearlessness against Grimm that is quite unique. I believe with the right training Matilda could blossom into one of the more formidable Huntresses to graduate from Kalos. To waste such a talent... I won't lose her without a fight." Tilly stared at the Headmaster with awed confusion, blinking away tears from her bloodshot eyes. "Fearlessness?" Rajvir echoed warily. "But Matilda is terrified of Grimm?" Suraiya shook her head in denial, meeting her daughter's guilty stare, "Right?" "I.." "If you don't mind," Sycamore pulled out a tablet, "I'd like to show you some footage from Launch Day." Tilly furrowed her brow, watching the Headmaster taping quickly across the surface of the tablet. Diantha turned away with a defeated sigh. Footage from Launch Day? What did that mean? He gestured to the side wall where a large hologram screen flickered into view. She felt her parents shuffle in their seats to watch as a video recording of the Ancient Hut. Her heart skipped a beat as she could see a tiny her and Marianne before the camera zoomed in, spying on the two girls having a conversation that was too far away to hear. "HEY GRIMM!" GONG. GONG. GONG. The image shook before stabilising, edges gently warping as Marianne and Tilly burst into action. The paragon expertly dodged falling debris before dashing to gracefully hook herself onto the hut's mezzanine while Marianne carved through rows of Ralts Grimm. While it was clear the two Hunter's didn't have perfect chemistry, there was certainly potential with their partnership. Tilly was performing more like a veteran with years of experience under her belt than someone coming up against Grimm for the first time, a farcry from her displays in class. "THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!" "Don't...you...dare...laugh at me!" GOOOOOOOOOONG. "You FUCKED IT AAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL UP!" Rain roared down onto the battlefield and amid slashing, carving and smashing the two girls managed to take out the Bronzorg Grimm and the remaining Ralts. As soon as the final Grimm fell the video ended and the holographic screen vanished with a flicker. Tilly had never watched herself fight, other than the replays in class which were always a large blow to her confidence. It was like.. she was a different person. So confident and strong and everything she had always wanted to be. Honestly, she never remembered much when she fought Grimm. It was a blurry patch in her memory like the way her father described drunkenness to her. "Tilly..." Suraiya breathed. "Was that real?" Rajvir asked, tone somewhere between awed and concerned. "Yes," Diantha sighed, glancing to Sycamore. Sycamore was stifling a victorious smile, glancing to the table for a moment to regain his composure. "Miss. Matilda has a great potential and perhaps with the right tutoring, she will be able to harness her true strength. That cannot happen unless she has the opportunity to learn." Suraiya and Rajvir glanced to each other again before Tilly's mother let out a sigh, "Let us sit on it, at least, and.. digest all that. Let's not make any rash decisions right now." Sycamore exhaled, shoulders relaxing as he sat back in his chair, "I'm glad to hear it." Tilly mirrored her Headmaster's relief and caught a smile from him that caused her to stare at the floor with a wide beam. "As for Miss. Pradhan's punishment," Diantha added sternly, pulling out what seemed to be a pretty steel bracelet, "She will be grounded from all leisure excursions for six months, barring holidays, and she will not allowed to leave the campus without signed permission from the Headmaster and myself. During her six month probation, she will be required to wear this ankle monitor. It will alert us if she leaves the campus at any time." The Vice Principle noticed Tilly's protesting look, "It may seem harsh to you Miss. Matilda, but you put four other students in danger as well as causing serious injury to a forth year." Diantha bent down by Tilly, gently bringing her right foot up to secure the ankle monitor as the girl began to soundlessly cry again, "Furthermore," she said, standing up, "Miss. Matilda will need to complete 40 hours of community service to the school which will be supervised by one of the Professors here." "That sounds fair," Rajvir nodded, putting a comforting hand on his daughter's shoulder which only caused her to sob more. "I'm still trying to process it all, honestly. I never expected this out of Matilda in a million years," Suraiya sighed, rubbing her index finger in the center of her forehead. Sycamore pulled out a red folder, laying it out on his desk and flipping it open, "Mr. and Mrs. Pradhan, we need to go over some paperwork regarding these consequences. Miss. Matilda you're free to go now, we'll let your parents catch up with you soon." He took a box of tissues from a draw and held it out for her, "Here, you can take these." Tilly nodded, slowly standing up and took the whole box, pulling out a tissue and dabbed it on her face where it completely soaked with tears, "T-Thank you Headmaster.. Vice Principle," she hiccuped. Not able to look her parents in the eye, the paragon turned, keeping her head down and walked out of Sycamore's office, closing the door behind her. |
