Battle Sprite Rules

  • Sprites must be no larger than 64 x 64 px. Smaller Fakemon should have slightly smaller sprites.
  • Sprites may have no more than 15 colors total. The 16th is the background color; our hackers find it easiest if, instead of a transparent background, a color is used instead.
  • Shinies must be direct, one-to-one replacements of their normal counterparts. One color is replaced by only one color. All the dark blue becomes dark pink; all the light yellow becomes light purple; so on and so forth. You can't have some of the dark blue become dark pink and some become dark green.
  • Front and back sprites must use the same palette.
  • The final sprite set should include front and back sprites of normal and shiny versions, in .png format.

"Overworld" Pokemon Sprites/Icons

  • Each species must have one small image, which we will refer to as an "icon." These icons are found most commonly in the menu. Each icon is animated and consists of two frames. Separate icons are NOT needed for shiny Pokemon.
  • They must be 32 x 32 px at largest.
  • They must be combined into one 32 x 64 image (example)
  • They must use these palettes.
  • The background colour (included in the top-left corner of every palette above) MUST be #639c84.

Overworld Character Sprites

  • Sprites for adult characters should be 16 x 20 px at largest.*
  • Sprites for children characters should be 14 x 17 px at largest.*
  • Sprites must use one of these palettes.

*This is based on the largest sprites of each type that I could find. If you can find an official sprite that is larger, I will revise these rules.

Spriting Tips

  • When posting your sprite, try to make the background color a neutral. Strong, vibrant colors interfere with our ability to see the details of the sprite, and may throw off our perception of the shading.
  • Be open to criticism. Often, other people see something you miss.
  • As this is a community effort, other people are allowed to edit your sprites. If you would prefer people not to edit your sprites without permission, you MUST post something to that effect alongside the sprite.
  • Please note, however, that ALL sprites submitted can and probably will be edited by the moderation team to keep the style consistent.

The "Overworld" Pokemon Sprites/Icons section is updated. I corrected what I believe is a typo (the images for icon sprites must be 32 x 64, not 32 x 24.)

According to the Advanced Pokemon Icon Editor, the new information is correct.
