The Ichibi (一尾, "one-tail"), also known as "Shukaku" is the demon-raccoon. Shukaku is cunning, but also incoherent, giving it the demeanour of a madman. According to legend, because of its innate rage and bloodlust, Shukaku relishes the opportunity to kill anyone in sight, even more so during a full moon. Like all tailed beasts, Shukaku has a strong desire to preserve its own life, and as such, will grant its jinchūriki the power to control sand as well as allow them to transform into it in a state of need and bloodlust. Gyūki has mentioned that Shukaku hates Kurama for its beliefs that the tailed beasts' strength is measured by the number of tails and, as such, views Shukaku as the weakest.

The Nibi (ニ尾, "two-tails"), also known as "Matatabi" is the monster-cat. Compared to most of the tailed beasts, Matatabi has shown to be respectful and polite towards others, speaking in a formal manner using 'watashi' (私) when referring to itself and using honourifics when addressing jinchūriki while introducing itself to them. Matatabi is a bakeneko that is completely engulfed with wild blue flames. It also has a right yellow eye and a left green eye, similar to an odd-eyed cat without pupils.

The Sanbi (三尾, "three-tails"), also known as "Isobu" is the giant demon-turtle. Isobu speaks in a shy manner, referring to itself as 'boku' (ボク) which is usually used by young boys, not demonic turtles! Isobu primarily resembles a large turtle, but with a crab-like shell, and three shrimp-like tails. Under its shell, it has red, muscle-like tissue. It has a pair of human-like arms and hands, but no hind-legs. Its lower jaw is rather big and has teeth-like horns, together with its big forehead, which also has horns, it somewhat resembles a mouth with big teeth, making it look like the rest of the face is inside the mouth. Its eyes are dark and have red pupils, and it has the innate ability to create a mist that causes the victims to see illusions.

four...five...six!

The Yonbi (四尾, "four-tails"), also known as "Son Gokū" is the handsome monkey king. Son Gokū is a very prideful tailed beast, as it detests being called by the name "Four-Tails" and boasts about its lineage. It uses 'ore' (オレ) when referring to itself. It also hates humans, due to the fact that humans have enslaved it, and believes that apes are more intelligent than humans. However, when talking about the Sage of the Six Paths, it shows him great respect.

The Gobi (五尾, "five-tails"), also known as "Kokuō" is the great dolphin-horse. Kokuō seems to be a quiet and reserved individual. Though it does not speak much, when it does Kokuō uses the rather old-fashioned 'watakushi' (私) when referring to itself causing it to come across as very polite. Kokuō primarily resembles a white horse, but with a dolphin's head. It has two pointed long horns and three shorter horns in front. The ends of its horns, hooves, and tails are light brown, with some of the same-coloured spots before the brown areas of its horns and hooves. It also has red markings under its dark blue-green eyes.

The Rokubi (六尾, "six-tails"), also known as "Saiken" is the giant demon slug. Though much has not been seen of Saiken's personality, the giant slug uses 'ore' (オレ) when referring to itself, 'ore' being a boastful way of saying 'I'. It also speaks with a dialect which may possibly be Ōsakaben. Saiken resembles a large, white, bipedal slug with stubby arms and feet. It has two prominent optical tentacles (eyes) and hole-like openings as a mouth. Its entire body is covered in a slimy substance. Saiken is able to emit corrosive, alkali substances that are extremely dangerous on contact in the form of a liquid or a gas, which was able to burn the skin of another tailed beast, such as Gyūki. The gaseous form was able to instantly disintegrate a tree that came into contact with it.

seven...eight...nine!

The Nanabi (七尾, "seven-tails"), also known as "Chōmei" is the lucky armored kabutomushi. Chōmei seems to have a happy, go-lucky persona — which it seemingly shares with its jinchūriki as shown when it introduces itself to its hosts, referring to itself as "Lucky Seven Chōmei" (ラッキーセブン重明, Rakkī sebun Chōmei) which might be an allusion to the fact that it has seven tails and the number seven having long been seen as a lucky as well as happy number. Chōmei resembles a blue, armoured kabutomushi, with six of its seven tails resembling green insect wings, along with the seventh tail, all growing from the end of its abdomen. The stem of the tail is green but the wings are orange. Its eyes seem to be covered by a helmet-like skull, from inside of which, an orange glow can be seen.

The Hachibi (八尾, "eight-tails"), also known as "Gyūki" is the giant demon ox. Gyūki is infamous to be wild, and violent. It also has went on many rampages whenever its former jinchūriki would lose control of it. Gyūki uses 'ore' (オレ) when referring to itself and often speaks in a somewhat rude dialect. With regards to its relationship with the other tailed beasts, Gyūki maintaining that they had their own emotions and personalities has expressed dislike of Kurama's habit of ranking their strength based on their number of tails and has also stated that seeing another beast being forcefully controlled angered the rest of them greatly.

The Kyūbi (九尾, "nine-tails"), also known as "Kurama" is the nine-tailed demon fox. Kurama is characterised as sarcastic, cunning, and intelligent, with a distinct sense of honour and pride. It uses 'washi' (ワシ) when referring to itself, which is generally used by older men. In a flashback, it is revealed that Kurama cares a great deal for the Sage of the Six Paths, viewing him with great respect for the way he treated the tailed beasts and was even crying after the Sage had imparted his final words to them. However, this sentiment was not extended to its brethren, as Gyūki mentioned that they, especially Shukaku, hated Kurama for its belief that their strength is determined by their number of tails. Kurama even scolds his host if they help other tailed beasts.
