First of all, I would like to thank you for welcoming me into your IRC and letting me learn more about who you all are, and your region. It has been a privilege to have interacted with your community, and I appreciate the opportunity to submit this application. I apologize for the length of time that I took to submit it, and I hope you all find my application as interesting and rich with RP potential as I do. Enjoy! - Ghant - What is your nation's name? Zythar - Have you ever applied to Pardes before? No - Do you role play any other nations? Yes- Ghant. - How big is your nation (or colony, if applicable) in terms of population? What sort of population density/overall landmass are you looking for? The continent and surrounding islands in the far northeast. - Please Describe your nation. “You think you own whatever land you land on The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim But I know every rock and tree and creature Has a life, has a spirit, has a name” -Vanessa Williams, Colors of the Wind Imagine a place that is far away, distant and exotic. A land of stunning beauty- islands with clear crisp waters. Mountains with forests and waterfalls. Abundant wildlife. Beautiful weather. Almost sounds like paradise…however, as we all know, paradise, if it were such a place, would not last forever. For paradise has resources, has potential wealth, has people. And people have a tendency to ruin it all, for men crave power. Imagine this paradise consisting of pleasant, ignorant, peaceful people, known as Zytharians. A race of people with fair skin, dark hair, and green eyes. They live in harmony with the land, and worship the mundane- trees, earth, water, sky, and fire as aspects of Gods. They are organized into Sietches, which are in turn lead by a Naib, or clan chieftain. Sietches were organized in particular areas of the land, although they were known on occasion to move to different areas, with the exception of the outlying Island Sietches, which stayed in one place. They lived in a state of blissful ignorance, until one day the people from beyond the seas discovered their existence. These people cam from New Belhavia. They came with their promises, their deals, their desires. The Island Sietches received the Belhavians, and began to trade with them, which lead to “outposts” for the traders. These outposts transformed into colonies, and colonies transformed into exploitation. What were once a pleasant, ignorant and peaceful people, naïve to the world, became used and taken advantage of by their colonial overlords. Inevitably, conflict would arise. And eventually it did. The Belhavians and the Island Sietches that grew rich off of their presence began to press in on the Inland Sietches of the continent. The Inland Sietches, being heavily divided, began to fall one by one, due to a lack of unity and common purpose. And then he came. From where, it is not known. He appeared one day in the deepest part of the continent, and began to preach about unifying the Sietches to expel their colonial overlords. They called him “Anlaoch”. He preached his message to many different Sietches, and soon gathered a host about him. Rather then commit small and random acts of terrorism against the Empire, he endeavored to attack them head on, and bring their colonial presence crashing down. They exploded outwards into the Island Sietches, forcing many into defeat or surrender. Many still joined Anlaoch outright. Others still fought, and died. The Belhavians fought, for a time, but eventually, all of their possessions in Zythar were lost, one by one, until finally, they left, and never returned. During that final battle, however, Anlaoch sustained a wound and died. Suddenly, Zythar, for the first time, found itself at a crossroads. It no longer had the Empire lording over it, but it also lost its purity. And so the nation of Zythar was born, amidst blood and fury. As time went by, the Zytharians had to learn how to adapt their ancient ways with the modern world around them. Zythar could no longer afford to be pleasant, peaceful paradise it had once been. It had known bloodshed, it had known suffering. It had known Empire. Today, Zythar still has the Sietches, and each Sietch functions as an administrative unit. Each Sietch then has a Naib, who assumes the title by taking it, either by being chosen by the people, or being gaining it though force- by killing the previous Naib. Each Sietch functions differently, and each often worships different Gods and observes different customs. Each Naib then chooses from among them one individual, known as the “Ceannaire”, to serve as the Head of State. The Ceannaire serves for life, but can be removed from office by a majority vote of the Naibs. Each Sietch chooses from among them a representative to serve in the Chomhairle, which is the legislative body. Today, the Island Sietches hold most of the power and are the most highly developed areas of Zythar. They have a certain degree of arrogance and entitlement towards the Inland Sietches, who live as they always have, for the most part, provided they pay their taxes. There are many themes that can be explored with Zythar as well. The classic “Red pill” vs. “Blue pill” argument- whether it is better to live in ignorance, for ignorance is bliss, and not be in communion with the “real world”, or to be engaged with the world beyond and try to catch up to it and be a part of it. The nature of Empire is a theme as well. Was Zythar better off as a part of an Empire? Many think so- it had access to technology that could develop and modernize the country, give people better, longer lives, and make people richer and happier. But, did the Zytharians want any of that? Some did, but others wanted to continue to enjoy the life that their ancestors had lived. And much blood was shed to maintain that, but was it worth it? Is Zythar really better off? Many argue that. Also is the dichotomy between the Island Sietches and the Inland Sietches. The Islanders are wealthy, worldly, educated, and politically and economically inclined. The Inlanders, on the other hand, are backward, uneducated, almost savage in comparison. And yet, the Inlanders are content to submit themselves to domination by the Islanders. What makes the Islanders so more tolerable then the Belhavians? Is it because the Islanders are Zytharian, like the Inlanders? They look and speak the same, so that makes it ok? Who has the right to rule, to dominate- and who does not? And then there is Paradise lost. What happens to Paradise after it is discovered, taken advantage of and abused? How does such a place struggle to exist, to hold on, in today’s world? How do their people interact with outsiders, or in foreign lands? How will time treat Zythar? Is it doomed to fall once again, and forevermore, into a state of subjection? Or can Paradise, once thought lost, be once again regained? I invite my friends and acquaintances in Pardes to meet, discover, and explore Zythar with me. Zythar, the land that time forgot. - How long have you role played this nation? How long have you role played on NS? How long have you been role playing? I have been working on this nation specifically for Pardes the past month or so. I started playing Nationstates in December 2002. I have been roleplaying since 1995- mostly Dungeons and Dragons 1st and 2nd editions. - Why are you interested in joining Pardes? I have heard many great things about the Pardes region, and, having been on the IRC channel for over a month, have gotten to know the community a bit. They seem like great role-players and are very knowledgeable about subjects conducive to a high-quality role-playing environment. - Please list 3 RP examples As Ghant: “The War of the Two Empresses”: http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=263293 “The Lords of the Sea”: http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=257981 “The Koy-Kulsandia War” http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=281078 - Did anyone refer you to Pardes? No. - Do you have a human population? If no, then please list what you have. Yes. - What tech level do you play with? If it is not MT, how will it interact with MT nations? MT. - Tell us a bit about yourself and how you'd contribute to the region. Short statements are fine, but a longer one is usually better. Just don't make it tl;dr. I am 26, and from St. Louis, MO. I am an ethnic Basque. I have been role-playing for almost 20 years, and I was one of the original NationStates players (I have left the game a few times and I have often “reincarnated” myself. I hold a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science with an emphasis in Public Administration. I also hold a Master’s degree in Public Policy, with specializations in Government Management and Planning and Zoning. My strength as a role-player, and what I think I have offer, consists of interactions between characters, developing history and lore, and exploring complex ideas in my writing. Essentially what I like doing the most is having either one character think about something, or have multiple characters discuss an issue. I believe that one cannot role-play as a nation, because nations are made up of people. For instance, often on NationStates, a nation will declare war. What I want to know is- how did this decision get made? What was going through the minds of the people that made that decision? What are their motivations, their fears, their ambitions, etc.? Is there dissent? What does the dissent think? Who are these characters, and why are they doing the things that they do? I prefer that expose. |
