Note: I'm not ready to formulate an official factbook but I got a basic gist of the History of Wolfmanne, but it's subject to change This thread is for suggestions, improvements and if you want, you can also ask if you want your nation to be involved in formulating the history. I still got more to add and I request that you don't post yet. Prehistory Spoiler: click to toggle Historically, the Prehistoric Wolfmanni population is lived in the fields of Wolfmanne, seeing the land as highly fertile. Surrounded by vast forests and mountains, they were safe from any other enemies beyond the Wolfmanne the Saintes d'Wolfmanne mountain range and the vast forests and rivers which surrounded the land the Paleolithic people lived in. Religion was either Pagan or based around ancestor worship. Temples of stone have been found, with references to several Gods, including Wolfmaneten, the leader of the various Gods of Wolfmanne. Wolfmaneten was worshipped by almost every single tribe in Wolfmanne, along with the various regional Gods which existed. The people, especially those living nears rivers, were early pioneers in boating. An early boat which was propelled by the river current alone and had a primitive rudder to steer it, has been found. A primitive anchor was used as it's breaks and to keep in place. It was used mostly for fishing and hunting, as deers in Wolfmanne often follow the river for several days. It is believed that in 8000 BC the first 'naval battle' occurred in Pardes and perhaps event he world; two of these boats collided with each and swere stranded after both hit a rock. Both crews of the boats, about 8 - 16 on each, assumed that both were attempting to steal their food and an indecisive boarding operation was attempted by both boats, with 4 deaths from both boats, before both were able to free themselves from being stuck and they continued along their paths as one of them redirected to a tributary. Bronze Age Spoiler: click to toggle 3000 years ago the first cities were built, as a place for tribes to trade goods between them. Some people settled around the markets, eventually containing a significant proportion of the Wolfmanni population to be considered true cities. The strongest chiefs rushed to gain control of these key cities; the cities quickly formed their own militias and defeated the invading tribes. Instead, a class of merchant elites began to dominate Wolfmanne. They established a monotheistical religion based around Wolfmaneten and trade with peoples beyond the Saintes d'Wolfmanne brought Wolfmanne into the Bronze Age. The first Galleys were brought to Wolfmanne, who modified the designs to make it a more seaworthy ship. Colonies for the purpose of trading between the natives, who based their economy around mining, was started in a nearby island and these Galley would be used for that purpose. Many cities united under the Wolfmanetenate Confederation, a theocratical confederation of independent cities, with the government based in the city of Vinebrenete, which was lead by an elected King, claimed to be the representative of Wolfmaneten. In 2500 BC, the Wolfmanetenate Confederation was driven into civil war - the War of the Three Wolfmannes, after the merchant elite came into conflict with the religious leaders of Wolfmanne. The Wolfmanetenate Confederation northern cities broke away to form the League of Aurumtum. The King of Wolfmanne, King Yrtyr V, unified the remainders of the Wolfmanetenate Confederation into the Kingdom of Wolfmanne and attempted establish a more centralised control in which the state would be seperate from religion, which dominated much of national politics. King Yrtyr was accused by his Priests as wishing to further divide the country and South Wolfmanne was divided into the Kingdom faction and the Wolfmaneten faction, lead by King-Priest Chartlen. King Yrtyr was able to get the rising intellectual class and a new aristocracy, which was formed from the leaders of several cities, to build a large army. Meanwhile, the lower classes supported the Wolfmanneten Confederation, due to the influence religion had on the average Wolfmanni's life. The League of Aurumtum wished to assert more power upon the rest of Wolfmanne and could call upon it's vast wealth and higher population to assist it. The League made gains against both factions, eventually causing vast defection from the Wolfmaneten faction which almost forced them to sue for peace, until the Battle of Deer Mountain bought the Wolfmaneten some time to rebuild, after a pyrrhic victory for the League. The decisive Battle of Vinebrenete, which actually consisted of three battles, occurred after the Kingdom captured Vinebrenete, the capital of the Wolfmanetenate, in the First Battle of Vinebrenete. The League too were advancing towards the city and the Kingdom decided to use it's chariot core of the army, consisting of nobles which could afford one. The chariots were equiped with scythed blades, which was seen as high uncoventional at the time. Historically, the chariots were used for the nobles to mount on and dismount in battle, where they could be either as mobile skirmishers or as mounted infantry. However the chariots would be used with more of a shock effect, to deliver the final but heaviest blow to the enemy. The battle began as usual; first there was the initial skirmish, then the main lines of infantry charged into eachother, with reserves in place for either flanking attacks or to commit more men. The chariots proved to be a great asset; they beat off three attempted flank attacks before themselves charging into the rear of the enemy army, cutting it to pieces. That day, 6,000 men of the Kingdom were able to defeat 20,000 men in the League, nearly their entire Army - only 2,500 lived to tell the tale, while only 1,000 from the Kingdom army were killed. The final stage of the Battle of Vinebrenete was a Wolfmaneten army lead by the King-Priest himself; 10,000 men committed, however they were defeated even more easily than the League; 4000 men, mostly conscripts, surrendered after a chariot charge devestated an elite guard unit called Wolfmaneten's Zealots, which was 4000 strong. The remainder consisted of warrior priests, who fought to the death. The King-Priest himself was captured; his life, along with that of 22 High Priests (nearly half of the amount of High Priests at the time) was spared in return for the Wolfmanetenate merging into the Kingdom of Wolfmanne. The League of Aurumtum had lost the majority of their troops and sued for peace but King Yrtyr wished to recapture it fully; he advanced north and besieged Aurumtum and several port cities to cripple their economy. They held out for three years until the cities were stormed and the Wolfmanne was reunified. King Yrtyr enacted several reforms after the war. After noticing the difficulty of drafting the men in, he decided to give that responsibility to his Nobles. They would draft peasants from their land, who would be equipped, given some training and be placed under his command. In return, the Noble had almost complete ownership over the Peasant, with ownership just lingering slightly outside of slavery. However the Peasants were allowed to farm the land and stockpile any food given from the harvest by the Noble of the land. In the Middle were the Freemen of the land; people who weren't bound to the nobility. These included those who were recognised as free by the King. They were allowed to rent land from any Noble of their choice and use it for whatever they wish to, within reason. Freemen included priests, merchants, professionals and soldiers. A Noble could 'free' a Peasant by submitting an application to the King himself, who would then approve it. Above the Freemen were the Fleurdearms, elite, professional soldiers under the direct control of the King. They formed the standing army of Wolfmanne and during peace time each individual Fleurdearms acted under the command of a Noble, who would rent out land to one in return for protection. Fleurdearmes were used as the enforcers pf both the King and the Nobility; the Nobility would use them to keep control, while the King would use them to keep the Nobles content, if requried. If a Noble rebels, the Fleurdearmes would have to respond immedietly by arresting the Noble for trial. If a Fleurdearme rebelled against the King, he was declared a 'Rougaemond', meaning that he could be killed without the killer being trialled for murder. Unlike Nobles, Fleurdearmes wouldn't use chariots but would instead act as the elite infantry of the Kingdom of Wolfmanne. Rleigion, although it wasn't as important in politics, still played it's part outside the government; the king was still the representative of Wolfmaneten on Earth and therefore a rebellion against the King himself would be seen as a rebellion against God. The last act of King Yrtyr was to declare the start of a new dynasty; the Yrtyr dynasty. The King wouldn't be elected, as it was before in the Wolfmaneten Confederation but the oldest son of the King would succeed him. When he died in 1488 at the ripe old age of 85, his eldest son, the 42 year old King Yrtyr VI. The Yrytyr dynasty lasted for about 200 years before another dynasty came to power; the Phoenatean dynasty, found by King Phoenatea I in 2272, came to be after the last Yrytyr King of Wolfmanne, King Urdulan Yrtyr the Last, who, after a dispute between other family members, declared his daughter's husband, a member of a wealthy and powerful noble family, the Phoenateans, King. The country was divided in two; one supporting King Phoenatea and the other supporting the Yrytyr dynasty, who believed that Peteraslav Yrtyr should had been King. The Yrytyrs were able to steal a lot of Gold from the treasury, allowing them to raise an army which consolidated it's power in the South. Meanwhile, the heavily taxed Northwest declared their allegiance to the Yrtyr, leaving Phoenatea to the Central and Northeast regions of Wolfmanne. The Yrtyrs wished to connect their divided territory and invaded Ilertyna, the central region of Wolfmanne. The Ilertyna Campaign, which lasted for a year, resulted in the indecisive Battle of Hastingmarsh, where marshy conditions meant the battle was only a few skirmishes. More people actually died from five starved packs of hungry Wolves, twelve Bears and two prides of Lions, which the Phoenateans wished to sacrifise to Wolfmaneten, devoured both camps of soldiers as they slept than in the skirmishes. Both armies withdrew in the panic and Illertyna was now half controlled by the Yrytyrs and half by the Phoenateans. However the Northwest would still be in a position to hold out against Phoenatean attack. The Yrtyr was able to draw the Phoenatean to battle 6 months later after the Illertyna Campaign, after a starving Northwest invaded the Phoenatean Northeast. King Phoenatea could only commit 2,000 men to the fort of El Tweleuron, while the Northwest attackers had assembled 12,000 men. However poor morale and low quality of the armour and weapons of the Northwesterners resulted in the death of 8,000 Northwesterners, while the remaining 4,000 defected. The 2,000 defenders suffered only 53 casualties in a surprising result. The rest of the Northwest promptly surrendered and what was a minor front turned major had now been extinguished. The Yrtyrs were pushed out of Illertyna and the Phoenatean two years later defeated Petraslav in the Battle of Petraslav's Hill. The Phoenatean's rule brought an era of peace for 900 years. During this Wolfmanni trade ships went far and wide, bringing wealth and prosperity to Wolfmanne. The Military remained a strong institution of power and Wolfmanne remained independent for a long time. The Great Fleurdearme's Revolt in 1713 BC caused the Fleurdearme system to be disbanded; instead, the Military was centralised and small, professional army loyal to the King was created, which served along side mercenaries. It would be supplemented by conscripts in the event of war; most Wolfmanni were trained in the Art of Warfare and this was avocated by the government was a way of keeping fit rather than preparation for war. Most engaements were at sea, against pirates and rival traders. Several wars were fought between rival states vying for power. Culture in Phoenatean Wolfmanne flourished. First Dark Age of Wolfmanne Spoiler: click to toggle But prosperity doesn't last forever. In 1356 invaders from another land invaded Wolfmanne. These barbaric people took Wolfmanne by surprised and had caught it at the right time; a series of avalanches, earthquakes, floods, a tsunami, and a famine had distracted King Phoenatea X. The armies of the invader quickly defeated the Wolfmanni armies, which weren't ready and in a surpising defeat, the Wolfmanni navy. He also declared the end to the Phoenatean dynasty, abdicated, fled to a quiter life as a Merchant in a 'land far away' and stated that 'all claims to the throne, even by a Phoenatean, are illegitimate - I leave rule to the Nobles, who shall rule over a Republic, with an elected King, not one decided by birth'. Society soon started collapsing, as the Nobles bickered and the invaders kept advancing. Key cities, including the capital city of Vinebrenete, were burnt to ashes. People started moving into the countryside and formed isolated village communities, based around banditry. Some fled abroad, using the trade routes to find new homes. The nobles were purged by both the invaders and the people; there was general anger amongst both of them. For 26 years this was the norm of Wolfmanne; at the end of these 26 years, cities were in ruins, the former nobility had been replaced by the barbarians, who ruled over small pockets of territory, new settlers began to reshape the Wolfmanni and Wolfmanne was divided. Many intellectuals had been killed when the cities were sacked, so culture and writing was lost. For 500 years Wolfmanne remained in the Dark Ages, until independent city states started rising up. Nobles began making political agreements with each other; old cities, such as Vinebrenete, Mycenaione, Archaera and Aurumtum, were refound, along with new ones such as Valkyncorinth, Romantoi, Iontine, Yrtyr (named after the Yrtyr dynasty) and Phoenatea (named after the Phoenatean dynasty) ruled collectively by oligarchies. Classical Wolfmanne Spoiler: click to toggle These cities allowed culture to start up again and in Aurumtum, a new alphabet was created, allowing for writing to once again begin. Wolfmanne was, at this time, divided into two different languages; 'Bronze-Wolfmanni', the pre-invasion language spoken by the Lower and Middle Classes and 'Dark-Wolfmanni', the language spoken by the nobility. The linguist, mathematician and philosopher Phoenatea of Aurumtum (not related to the Phoenatean dynasty) fused together elements from both language to create one which was understandable by both speakers of the languages. The nobility of Aurumtum chose to adopt it as the language of the city and refined it to their taste, before they commissioned Phoenatea to travel across Wolfmanne to 'spread his words of wisdom'. Phoenatea spent 20 years travelling to each and every one of Wolfmanne's cities, opening up Academies and tutors to teach this new language; in addition, these academies taught literature, philosophy and maths. During these 20 years, Phoenatea met a 'man from a land far away', who had been exiled for his beliefs. He taught him the system of Democracy; after 20 years, Phoenatea returned to Aurumtum, with great news; the language had widely been adopted. This success meant that Phoenatea of Aurumtum was elected 'Eternal King of Aurumtum', a title which he would only hold, although in reality he held little to none political power but he could still significantly influence the nobility with his words of wisdom. Although one would assume that the invaders would had brought their own religion, they adopted the Wolfmaneten religion. The system of Democracy was also adopted in Aurumtum, with an elected Prince (as Phoenatea held the title of 'Eternal King') to reign. Rules meant that only nobles could be elected as Prince but the people (not strictly all of them but the Middle Class) still had a say in the Legislature of Aurumtum. Phoenatea died at the age of 81, which was surprisingly quite old at the time, but to this very day, he is recognised at 'Eternal King' of Aurumtum. The exact birth and death of Phoenatea is unknown, although the 'Phoenatea of Aurumtum era' is confirmed to have been from late 700 BC to mid/late 800 BC. Wolfmanni trade ships started springing up again; the sturdy design of the Galley was rediscovered by Elysium the Sailor, who constructed one and sailed it from Wolfmanne to New Edom in 692 BC, returning a year later. This started up the famous Wolfmanni trade once again, which was primarily controlled by Aurumtum; this meant that many cities were increasingly reliant on Aurumtum, something Vinebrenete didn't like. The Vinebrenete Confederation was formed by many cities to counter this; Aurumtum meanwhile resurrected the League of Aurumtum. War was inevitable and in 662, on the anniversary of the departure of Elysium, Vinebrenete forces invaded the League. Vinebrenete had built up a reputation for excellent soldiers, while Aurumtum had the advantage of wealth. Aurmtum hired foreign mercenaries to do their bidding and nine years later, captured Vinebrenete and united Wolfmanne into the Republic of Woflamanne. A Senate of Wolfmanne was constituted, which was essentially an elected plutocracy, along with a lower Assembly of Wolfmanne, in which people not meeting the wealth requirements of the Senate could be elected to, although literacy was required. There would be three Kings of Wolfmanne, two elected by the Senate and one by the Assembly. These Kings would share the roles of National Affairs, Foreign Policy and the Military, although one often specialise in one. The Assembly usually elected the King dealing with National Affairs; the Senate would elect the other two. Each King elected by a house could be removed by a vote of no confidence, otherwise by default they ruled for life. For the first time, a judicial system was created separately; a Lesser Tribunal of First Instance was the first step for minor crime, the Lesser Tribunal of Appeal for appeals, the Higher Tribunal of Cities and fianally the the Supreme Tribunal of Wolfmanne, each presided by a number of Tributes. Anyone could be called to serve as a Tribute; their service was usually for a year, although some trained as 'career tributes' (note: this is in no way related to the Hunger Games - I thought about this before I even knew what it was). Colonies were found by Wolfmanne, which would last for some time. The Republic would remain prosperous, with it's sturdy Galley designs effectively meaning it would rule the waves. The transition from chariots to cavalry was undertaken in early 500 BC, after the 'Experimental Non-Charioteering Horses' were commissioned into the Army. They performed well, able to ride faster in combat and also able to outclass chariots in most respects, resulting in them becoming the standard in the Army by at least 584 BC, they had become the standard.
