Population; Approximately 1 billion Land Area: 364,400km Approximate Population Density: 2,744 people per square kilometer Bravnvalk is a semi-autonomous territory of the Greater Dienstad nation of Skibereen. The colony of Bravnvalk was established in 900AD, as an outpost for private merchant groups from the Skibereen territories who noting the wealth if the Canaanite merchants opted to make their financial excursions to the Pardes region. The colony was unnamed by the Yrysh-Fynndjalls who were putting it use, as it was the only safe port in Pardes for them, it was merely Pardes. However the colony itself became known as Bravnvalk as the "merchants" coming from Skibereen acted more like pirates, and the term for this kind of adventurer is a Bravnvalk, because he acting a Bravn. The Pardesian peoples of the period were ill equipped to deal with multitudes of Yrysh-Fynndjall spilling into their region, this is in no small part because the weight of it at the time was not fully understood. The Yrysh-Fynndjall's long tradition of shipwrighting had lended to itself to advances in ship making well ahead of many nations. With what modernity now refers to as junk rigging, and flexible scalar boat planking yielded the Fynndjall to have fast ships which could sail into the wind without tacking. Thus their hit and run style of raiding was difficult to stop, or predict, and even more difficult to counter as the Fynndjalls made away from superior forces. Additionally there was rarely a call for a concerted effort to fight the Fynndjalls, they had a custom of not taking all of anything in a raid, and of only killing those who resisted, the traditions of the Fynndjall in respecting the Holymen of any land also lent itself to not being demonized by the religious sectors of various communities. Coupled with the fact the Bravn ships were all largely exactly the same in appereance and the Fynndjalls Scars and Marks traditions made men of the same clan appear very similar the estimates as to the size of the Bravn colony were largely well under what it was in actual fact. This mistake also led to several superstitions about the Fynndjall, one being that death at sea for them was not permanent(this was magnified by the fact that Fynndjalls on land never left fallen comrade's bodies behind). As well it was believed that they were far better at seaborne warfare then they actually were(which was still exceptional) because of the similarities often several ships were mistaken for one industrious and seemingly unstoppable crew. In modernity the Fynndjalls of Bravnvalk were not as plagued by the civil strife of their homeland, and thus experienced a much longer period of stability and economic growth. While being somewhat isolationist for the better part of the first half of the 20th century the Islands of the Colony of Bravnvalk have grown into a bustling economic powerhouse a center of trade and tourism. The dense population uses up a great deal of land and Bravnvalk relies heavily on importing raw goods. |
