Maybe dark side is the wrong way to put it. But recently I rewatched the first Pirates film, it's been a few years since I last watched it and with getting older I view things a bit differently. So it's only now that I see a side to Elizabeth that I hadn't thought of before. She was way too into pirates since she was small, so the moment she found Will with his Aztec creepy skull face pirate medallion she was interested in him. But Will didn't know about his pirate heritage, and by being a polite blacksmith Elizabeth no longer had that interest. No matter how many times she tried to nudge his memory with talk of their first meeting, he just wouldn't remember about pirates and such and remained the same polite man. This was no good, Elizabeth didn't want politeness, she wanted a bad boy. Someone who would call her by her first name. Will clearly was interested in her, making this quite a sad tale between them. Elizabeth even seemingly was more interested in Norrington, perhaps because of his connections to piracy. Even if that connection was executing them. Until all the pirate heritage has come to light, then she's interested again in Will, who is quite happy to stop being the law abiding polite man he once was in favour of following his newly found connections to piracy. So the moral may be change everything about yourself to be the one you love. Awesome.

I suppose that is one way to look at it. I do love how she has this pretend how-dare-you thing going on but secretly she's loving it. Like the bit where Jack was hitting on her in... DMC, I think.
