Wisdom teeth? :(; I need your experiences...

Okay, I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out soon  and I'm scared to death!!! I figured something that might help a little is if I had a better idea of what to expect. So, if you or someone you know has gotten widsom teeth removed, please answer! Thanks. I mostly would like to know:

1. How much pain do you feel during the nasty operation?
2. How long until it stops bleeding?
3. How long until the swelling tends to go away?

I realize that none of you are dentists (at least...I don't think you are  ) or experts about wisdom teeth removal, but if you could let me know what you know or have heard, it would make me feel a lot better about this. *sigh* Why do these things happen to me?

I haven't had mine taken yet, but I have had eight teeth removed...my dad's side of the family has terrible teeth. Here's what I got:

1.) During the operation, you won't feel any pain. You'll either be on a local anesthia (meaning they'll only desensitise your mouth - that's what they did for me...administering the anesthia hurt more than the actual operation) or completely under. No pain for that part. But afterwards...get ready to suffer. My gums hurt for a week. My dad tells me you won't hurt so much at first, but in a few hours...you better have that advil handy.
2.) Last time it took me the better part of five hours...and that was for my bottom row of teeth. Wisdom teeth could take longer, I don't really know. They told me it'd be two hours, but my teeth were still bleeding long after that...don't plan on eating a good meal for a while...you'll be slurping.
3.) I don't know about swelling...even my baby molars didn't swell...I think.

And one more thing; DO NOT chew your lip at all until the anesthetic wears off (your mouth could be numb for an hour after the anesthia). You won't be able to feel it, so you won't know if you're really hurting it. My brother did this and he chewed it up really bad. It swelled up something terrible and was all purple...unattractive, not to mention incredibly painful. That's all I got, hope I helped!

Aye, i can tell you the tale of how i lost two of me wisdom theeth!

It involved a coconut and a band of savage monkeys.... no wait, i am confused with the time i got that iron plate in me head.

The teeth, wisdom teeth to be precise... i've had to see two of them get lost to Davey Jone's Locker a long time ago. The surgeon decided to remove them one at the time, in a two week interval.

1. First of all let me reasure you; i did not feel any pain, and neither do i expect you to experience any. They use anesthetics you know. Varios methods those splurging surgeons have at their hands to make it a painless procedure, in my case i got two injections in me gums near said soon-to-be-gone wisdom teeth. The needle stings did hurt nayer bloth, but the run off tasted bitter.
After waiting a while for the anesthetics to work their magic the procedure began. In my case the doctor decided to use a drill and shatter them to pieces. As i said, i did not experience any pain, but because of the very local loss of feeling i did feel him "work around in my mouth", that was a little bit odd. Took no more than 10 minutes though.

2. You will lose and taste a lot of blood, wich can become very nausiating. They put a bundle of gauze on the wound on wich you have to bite down too keep it in place and stop the bleeding. My advice is to bite down, and make sure you hold it into place, but not to hard, don't tire yourself out because it takes for about an hour or two for the bleeding to stop. It could be a good idea to ask your partent(s) / caretaker(s) if they can restrain themselves from asking you a lot of questions. Obviously they are curious, but answering those can be a little difficult for you due to the fact you have a bundle of gauze you are tring to keep pressed down on the wound in your mouth. Talking with your jaws shut
At one point, as my mother was asking a question, i answered but opened my mouth to far, the gauze got out of place and old blood came gushing out. It was horrid tasting and from that point the ride home took place in utter silence

3. This i do not remember clearly, i do know i was out of action and feeling pretty miserable for a couple of day's, about a week or so. The procedure itself is painless but as the hospitals anesthetics wear out you will be unpleasantly reminded of the wound in your mouth. It's difficult to eat and you'll have to take painkillers regularly. No worries though, painkillers and the cuddling of your parent(s) / caretaker(s) you will recieve will help you trough it.

I wish you the best while facing this ordeal. I am sure you will do just fine!

Oh, the joy of visits to the dentist...

1) Pain, not during. Depending on how hard it is to get them out, it could take as long as 2 hours.
And, yes, a fair amount of bleeding and whatnot, but they generally do a good job keeping your mouth clean of debris.

2) Afterwards, aside from the sore gums and not being able to eat solid foods for a day, the thing I recall is that the jaw was sore from being open that long. In my case, luckily, I didn't get them all out at once. If possible, I'd opt to have one side done, then the other, as at least you can chew on one side and it's not half as bad.

3) I agree that it was about week before things more or less got back to normal. With proper medication, the swelling shoul dgo down in a couple of days, but the gums don't completely heal for longer than that. The meds will help against the pain and the swelling.

My sympathies... at least you'll never have to deal with that happening -- again!

Haven't had to get mine removed yet but it is inevitable...

pirategirl, just think of how many times you can watch POTC while you recover! And the commentaries, and the flies on the set, and the deleted scenes and the bloopers... *voice fades away still talking*

LOL at the ads! They are tailored to the discussion, aren't they?

I've only had one actual wisdom tooth out, but I've had other teeth extracted (not to mention lots of other dental work). I agree with what's already been said. It's not a pleasant experience, but in most cases you should be fine after a day or so. They'll likely give you some good painkillers to get you through the worst of it. It'll also depend on how impacted the teeth are too--your jaw may ache a bit more if they are really impacted.

Just plan to take it very easy the first day or so. Oh, and one thing with the bleeding after--Usually the bleeding will stop fairly soon, and you'll end up with a sort of jelly-like 'scab' in the hole where the tooth was. You want to be careful not to dislodge that until it's healed underneath. So no swishing liquids around vigorously or anything like that. :)

Yes, I prescribe a day of watching POTC with lots of ice cream and jello and stuff close to hand. :) LOL...reminds me of the day POTC came out on DVD--I had oral surgery that morning, and spent the rest of the day watching POTC and all the extras. It was great! :D

Okay - I'm gonna scare the heck out of you!! WOO-HOO!!

My experience was this: I only had novacaine (sp?) - and it took the dentist 2 hours to get my teeth out. No pain during, just stress because I was fully awake. Bleeding stopped within the day, I suppose...they usually have you rinse your mouth with salt water for a day or so afterwards, but like pawzie says, no vigorous swishing. Pain afterwards - yes, but not too bad...my biggest problem was eating because I tend to chew way at the back of my mouth. Big time painkillers the dentist gave me only made me feel weird and sleepy, so I took extra-strength Tylenol, and it worked fine. Bleeding is good, you do NOT want dry sockets, which WILL hurt. Some folks have swelling and/or bruising - I did - lasted about a week, tops.

Mr. Das was put under for his teeth. He felt no pain during the procedure. However, when he came out of the anesthesia he became violently ill (both from the anesthesia and from swallowing blood), so he had to take meds (which the dentist gave him) to stop the vomiting. To this day - 15 years later - he STILL praises that magic pill that stopped his nausea. He had little or no swelling/discomfort afterwards.

And then there is my mother - she had her wisdom teeth pulled, and an hour or two later was eating a huge Italian hoagie (sub, hero).

Bottom line - it's hard to predict how YOU will feel and react. Don't worry about what might happen - but be aware that if it DOES happen, it's normal, and lots of folks have had the same experience.

On an aside - the swelling and bruising that you may have afterwards is an easy way to get sympathy and special treatment from family and friends...so don't be afraid to play it up!! :P

Getting teeth out is not a favorite activity for anyone.

I was lucky enough that they knocked me out for my proceedure, so I definately did not feel any pain from that, but whatever it was they knocked me out with (cannot recall what exactly...) it made me ill about 30 minutes after I was all done. But that could just have been stress too. It was very very difficult to drink water for me (my lips and mouth were numb), but it was great entertainment for my family. The only reason it was painful for me apparently, is because I got dry sockets (where the pulled the teeth), but I tell you-- the drugs they give you, the most wonderful little pills in the world.

Some people get codine (some get sick from it too), others get vicodin, etc. But a buddy system for taking the pills is good. I told myself I would avoid online so that when I was doing stuff like RPs it wouldn't be too crazy and very out there. Looking back (only three months ago), I was okay, the drugs didn't really make me that much crazier, but wow, they were good. Apparently I thought all that stuff too when I first 'woke up' from the proceedure. I think I said, "this stuff's so good I don't know why people don't take it all the time..."

Embarassing...

But, consider taking pictures just for the sort of 'look, I look like a chipmunk with my swollen cheeks,' good momentos. I think it took three days for my face to look normal. Just don't let other people get thier hands on pictures, they'll start treating it like blackmail material. :P

This thread is very reassuring, i've been dreading getting mine done for years...even though i don't know when i'll have to get mine taken out. My Gran was past 75 before she had hers out! I'm just generally a nervous wreck when it comes to dentists :( , one filling was bad enough.

I am also scared about what i might do whilst under the anesthetic...when my aunt got hers done, in the middle of the procedure she kicked the dentist in the groin and he refused to continue!

LMAO! I've always wanted to kick my dentist in the groin. :P

I wouldn't worry too much about the wisdom teeth. :) There are many different ways to get them removed, and many different personal reactions to each procedure - but this sort of thing gets done many thousands of times each year; the surgeons know what they're doing, and they've most likely done it many times before.

1. How much pain do you feel during the nasty operation?
Nada. Well... the injection with novocaine (or whatever it was) hurt very badly - but it was only flash of pain, and then it was gone. No pain during the actual operation (though even without pain it wasn't very pleasant to feel the surgeon hacking away at my teeth  ).

2. How long until it stops bleeding?
Just a few hours, as far as I recall... I think I had to keep some rolled-up gauze on for the rest of the first day (or the first hours of it), but nothing after that.

3. How long until the swelling tends to go away?
I believe the swelling is supposed to be at its worst after two days.

Really, the whole thing was no big deal. I only took some mild painkillers the first day (pre-emptively), and had no serious pain at any time. (Except once when I was brushing my teeth not long after surgery, and brushed a bit too far back. <_< ) I couldn't open my mouth very far for the first days, but that was no big deal. I only kept to a liquid diet on the first day; after that I just tore tiny pieces off my food and chewed them carefully. It's all very doable. :)

I've got to get mine taken out on Friday...all four... I'm more nervous about keeping them clean than actually taking them out. I think I have a good enough tolerance for pain. I actually like it when dentists mess with my mouth  Yeah wierd I know. I'm just such a perfectionist that I'll worry every time I eat about keeping the spaces cleaned out.

Also...I read over the thread. I realized that I had never had any dentist mentioned the removal of my wisdom teeth...until after I posted earlier!

I have to get two(bottom two) out in late July. Of course I don't think it'll be bad because one of them is already half way through the gum. ;) (doesn't that sound nice)

What they did for me is they had this green stuff on a q-tip and stick it by your teeth. He than injected the novacane needle and I sat in the chair looking around the boring room with werid music playing on the radio.

As for the swelling it depends on your body some of my friends they say the swelling goes down fast. For me it last about four or Five hours before the swelling and the numbness are completely gone.
____________
What I'm afraid of is when I have to get a post stuck in my gum.
I fell off of my skooter and broke my right wrist and lost my whole perminate tooth(I went back to the sidewalk and found it on the ground) and chipped half of one. I wear a flipper( a retainer with a fake looking tooth on it) and they fixed the chipped tooth. Later part of the chipped tooth(they fake part) broke off and they fixed it but, it left a dirty yellow perminate stain where they put the chippped of piece so it looks werid.

Yeah so in 08 they have to make a hole in my gums, boy does that sound like fun or what. :D They teeth I'm talking about are top front ones.
