Cedar Point!; Roller Coasters, anyone?!

I've heard others on the board mention their love for roller coasters. Well, I just had to start a thread talking about one of my favorite places to visit - Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

Cedar Point

Cedar Point currently has 16 roller coasters (As does Six Flags Magic Mountain. The two parks keep trading records on the most roller coasters on a seemingly seasonal basis).

CP is consistently a record-breaker in roller coaster construction such as:

Corkscrew (1976) - The world's first triple-looping coaster
Gemini (1978) - Debuted as the world's tallest and fastest
Magnum XL-200 (1989) - First coaster to top the two hundred foot barrier at 205 feet. Considered to be the world's first megacoaster.
Raptor (1994) - Steel inverted coaster which debuted as the world's tallest and fastest of its kind
Millenium Force (2000) - The first to break the 300 foot barrier at 310 feet with a top speed of 93 mph. The only roller coaster to break that record is the Steel Dragon in Japan at 318 feet.

My favorites are:
1) Millenium Force (out-and-back-coaster) It is simply takes your breath away. You think that first hill will never end and then you pop right back up into the 2nd hill at 169 ft and then a 3rd at 182 feet. And considering its 93 mph speed it is surprisingly smooth. My bad back has NO TROUBLE with this one. I can't ride most wooden coasters anymore due to the rough ride.

ADMINS: I tried making this picture a thumbnail using Das's directions but I couldn't get it to work. I kept getting a small picture on top of the written url with no clickability.

2) Wicked Twister (Double-twisting impulse coaster) It's on a U-shaped track where the train is launched from 0 to 72 mph in about one second and climbs a 215 foot track, twisting 450 degrees and then goes backwards to the other side.

3) The Raptor (Steel inverted coaster) This is still an amazing ride 12 years after it was built.

I grew up in a small town about 20 minutes from Cedar Point so it's always been a part of my life. When I was little (in the 60's :o ) CP was basically just a local park and had only one roller coaster (The Blue Streak, which is still in operation). I remember going to the park and you could just walk right in. You paid for each ride separately (carnival style). Then, when I was a teenager (and they added some new coasters) they had an option where you could buy an all day ticket and you'd get a wrist band (with people still being able to just walk in for free and buy individual tickets). I think that only lasted 1 or 2 years and then you paid one price to get in and ride all you wanted.

So, has any one else out there been to Cedar Point?

I haven't been to Cedar Point, BUT I looooooooooooove me some good coasters!

My favorite is Sea World's Kraken in Orlando, Florida. That is the only coaster I've ever felt dizzy on after one ride. I also love Universal's indoor The Revenge of the Mummy for atmosphere and thrills. I could go on, but I've got an editorial that needs writing...I'll be back!

Nope, never had the chance to go to Cedar Point, though I might this year. I'm planning on working at the Cedar Fair park Worlds of Fun here in Kansas City, and by being an employee, I get free admission into other Cedar Fair parks, including Cedar Point.

Worlds of Fun has never been the best park I've ever been to (not even CLOSE). I do hear they've been doing better on making the park look nice the last couple seasons (I've not been there in a while). I hear the Cedar Point is a lot better, which I don't doubt, since it's the parent park, and companies always seem to do better with parent parks than the sister parks (take Silver Dollar City versus Dollywood, for instance; SDC is the parent park and has been treated a tad better than Dollywood, though with the Herschends, all their stuff is great, no matter whether a park is a parent park or not).

I'm eager to go to Cedar Point to ride Top Thrill Dragster. When I first heard about the coaster when it was first being built, I was SO excited to hear about such an awesome coaster. I can't wait to ride it!

I hope you do get to go - it's definitely a world class park. They open the gates an hour before the rides start so I would get there as soon as possible and immediately go to the Top Thrill Dragster and get in line. It has notoriously long lines (as well as the Millenium Force). On busy days and especially the weekends be prepared to wait at least an hour or two. Like other circuit coasters similar to the TTD it is constantly breaking down so be ready for that possibility also. We've been to CP on days when hours would go by without seeing a car go over the hill.

I'm very familiar with the area around CP and would be happy to give suggestions for places to stay. Hotels/motels right in Sandusky can be VERY pricey in the summer but there are other small towns nearby that would work just as well.

I stay in the absolutely rock-bottom-cheapest place.....my Dad's house!!

I like Six Flags over Georgia pretty well as far as amusement parks go. Superman and Batman!! Now they just need a Spiderman...

Another of my favorite place for roller coasters is Carowinds. I absolutely love Top Gun!!!!!

Of course who could not love Rockin Rollin Roller Coaster at WDW MGM?

Brook, you'll need to convince your family to make the trip to Ohio to go to Cedar Point. It would probably be about a 12 hour trip from where you live but it would be worth it. Hey....go to Cedar Point when you get there and then take Rt 75 back south through Cincinnati and go to King's Island on the way home! The Beast at King's Island is my FAVORITE wooden coaster (which is still the longest wooden roller coaster after 25 years).

Cedar Point is unlike Carowinds where you can see everything in one day. A two-day pass is well worth the extra money especially for those who like to ride the roller coasters. Standing in those long lines can eat up the whole day when the park is really busy.

(and for anyone who's wondering about my hyper-enthusiasm: I am in no way connected to Cedar Point and am not a paid endorser  !!! I just love the place.)

Oh, I totally understand your enthusiasm. I myself have had to make the same disclaimer when talking about Silver Dollar City (though I hopefully *will* be working there someday soon...).

My stepbrother lives in Ohio now, so I'd definitely have a good enough excuse to take an excursion that far out from KC. I wonder how far out he is from Sandusky....

I know exactly what you mean love . My family got season passes for the summer, I'm riding that one til I can't stand for puking!

Given I've already made myself sick on it this year, I rode it fives times in 30 min (lines were WIDE OPEN!!! :yay: ), but it caught up with me. I suddenly understand the need for long lines. I about died :blech: . Hopefully there will be no lingering effects... <_<

I don't know if anyone's heard of this but...
Stealth at Thorpe Park has to be the best thing EVER!
Second after that is the Hulk coaster at Island of Adventure, Florida

Cat - I've checked out the Thorpe website and pictures of Stealth. Is this one of the jet-launch coasters that goes straight up and over one huge hill and then returns? Or is this a regular circuit, out-and-back coaster?

Cat....sounds like you need to get to Cedar Point. Their Top Thrill Dragster link (that Tina said she wants to ride) is the same style ride but is twice as high as Stealth and nearly twice as fast :o . Hill = 420 ft and speed = 120mph (sorry I don't have equivalent handy)

It's in Sandusky, Ohio. It's actually a small city right on Lake Erie....pretty much right between Toledo and Cleveland. Cedar Point is not in the city but sits on a penninsula that juts out into the lake/Sandusky Bay. The whole park is surrounded by water on 3 sides.

Here's a yahoo map Sandusky Ohio Area

If you zoom in on Sandusky - Cedar Point is the land mass that's NE of the city.
