I found this over on the official DMC site. It's on the 'Black Pearl 101' game- before you answer the questions, you look around the Black Pearl, and under the Bowsprit/figurehead area, it says this:

Quote:

A figurehead is a carved decoration at the prow of the ship, beginning in the 16th century-- often displaying the name of the ship. Originally, the Black Pearl was a merchant vessel under the employment of the East India Trading Company named the Wicked Wench, helmed by Captain Jack. After refusing to complete an assignment, Lord Cutler Beckett sanctioned the torching (and sinking) of the Wicked Wench, and branded Jack Sparrow a pirate. Jack petitioned Davy Jones to retrieve his ship that he rechristened as: 'The Black Pearl'.

Well, this throws into sharp relief that which I had not yet considered. This shows that Jack didn't really choose to be a pirate- well, at least not to start with-, but was a legitimate (maybe...) merchant. JACK?! A merchant?! I'm not sure if I'm liking this idea. Maybe because it seems too... mundane? And the Black Pearl as the Wicked Wench?! Elizabeth may have something to say about that... So Jack has turned on his own kind- from being a merchant, to preying on them...And what was this task he refused to complete?

And the Black Pearl seems to have had a pretty rough time of it, to date. First torched and sunk, then commandeered by a load of cursed skeleton pirates?! Jeez...

However, one more thing- it seems to have been assumed, up to now, that Jack sold his soul for the compass that points to your heart's desire... but what if, instead, he sold it to get his beloved ship back? He seems to be VERY attached to it...

Views, anyone?

I love this history. We've known for some time now that the BP was the Wicked Wench (mucho thanks to Toby over on KTTC), but it's great to finally learn exactly HOW the name change came about.

Jack being a merchant works pretty well for my still-in-progress fanfic. So far, in fact, everything's turning out pretty well; I'm not going to have to change too many things, and they'll be minor.

Anyway, this story can be used as well in our discussions on KTTC concerning the similarities between PotC and Star Wars. This whole "Jack not completing an assignment" thing, to the chagrin of Lord Bucket (teehee) reminds me quite a bit of Han Solo's situation--dumping his cargo to the chagrin of Jabba the Hutt.

SPOILER CONCERNING JACK AND HIS DEAL WITH DAVY

Highlight: I guess I can see now where that quote from one of the trading cards comes from... There's a quote from Jack that says something about how the BP is his ship and has always been his ship.

Technically, he's right. Before she was raised from the sea by Davy, she was owned by Jack.

He also points out good logic in DMC... Even though the deal between he and Davy said 13 years, for 10 of those Jack wasn't even captain! He only had the Pearl back for 3 years before Barbossa took her away from him. Too bad Davy doesn't see the logic.

SPOILER CONCERNING JACK'S SOUL, THE BP, AND THE COMPASS

Highlight: And yes, Jack sold his soul to have Davy raise the re-christened BP. The compass came from Tia Dalma.

Yup. I'm lovin' this history.

Cool, thanks for posting this Choccie. I always wondered why DJ was after Jack. Well now we know why there are so many holes in the sails.

Simply

Yeah, it's hard to picture Jack as a merchant. (It must be pretty dull, compared to piracy - apart from the changes of scenery, of course.) But it'd also be difficult to imagine someone being born like the Jack we know and love. ;)

But... The Pearl, a merchant ship? She must have moved something perishable, with her speed (presuming that wasn't supernatural), and the oars... I wonder what.

I, too, wonder what task Jack refused to complete...

*lightbulb* Oh! Perishable goods! Slaves, perhaps? Freedom stuff - could be enough reason for Jack to refuse an assignment. (Even if JD said that Jack's freedom obsession was because Jack had been emprisoned, which probably wouldn't have happened before his turning pirate. But then, society and employment are prisons too... And his obsession with freedom could also be the result, rather than the reason, for his refusal, of course; Jack constantly convincing himself that he was right.) But for piracy, a simple refusal to ship (an overly large number of?) slaves wouldn't be enough... So he put them ashore, maybe? Must have been near (or in) the harbour then, if Beckett got him; somehow I can't imagine Jack running away after doing something like that.

But I may be completely wrong, of course...
And yeah, I'll stop now. :P

Edit:
Forgot due to my rambling:
I sort of like Wicked Wench. It's a far step from there to Black Pearl... So either Jack is more poetic than he seems, or maybe the new name had something to do with his refusal of the assignment. (Oh dear... I just hope there wasn't a woman involved in the slave stuff.)

Speaking of prisoners, I wonder if there any connection with the Turkish prison that Will apparently ends up in?

This would certainly explain a run-in with the East India Trading Company, if nothing else. Jack is apparently good at stealing boats, ... er, ships. I don't believe the EITC dealt with slaves, though. There could be a lot of different reasons for Jack refusing to do whatever, so hard to imagine exactly what might have caused the uproar and Jack's turing to piracy. Now, what this would make clear is why Jack was more of a "gentleman" pirate, given his past. It also would explain his love of the sea. It still leaves open the question of how he made the transition from cartographer to seaman.

That's very interesting.... :D I knew about the raising of the Pearl, and the reason why Jack made that deal with DJ, but I hadn't heard about the Wicked Wench. I'm going to be very curious to see how much of the backstory they are able to work into the movie. I assume they'll tell us at least some of it...perhaps the rest will need to wait for POTC3. I do think it's neat that the Pearl was always Jack's....no matter what her name. And she must have been very special, for Jack to have gone to such great lengths to save her.

I've just discovered this, DutchS (on anther game! On msn messenger):
Quote:

Jack would get the Pearl, pulled up from the bottom of the sea as the fastest, sleekest ship in all the Caribbean...

So, it became 'new and improved' thanks to Davy Jones- it wasn't really fast beforehand, when it was a merchantship...

Incidentally (yet more spoilers, methinks!), I've also discovered bit about why Liz and Will are arrested at the start. I don't know, yet again, if anyone's read this anywhere-

Quote:

Beckett, see, told young Will Turner that he would put a hangman's necklace around Elizabeth's pretty throat...
...Unless he gets the Jack's compass... which, in the hand of Beckett, would point to all pirates I suppose, so he could elimate every... last... one...

Ooer, but that sounds like a bit of blackmail to me... It's all starting to piece together in my head, before I had loads of bits, but no idea how it all worked... Still I don't know what really happens between the beginning and the end (which is kinda a crucial bit!) And I think I want to keep it that way...

Apparently, slaves were indeed the cargo. Toby and his pal have been playing the cellphone game, and they got the information on the BP plus the info on the cargo being slaves.

This is a time for real beard-stroking...

I'm very encouraged that this next installment will leave the viewer much to ponder and good reason to view the film multiple times to gather more subtle information.

Strange...
Then again, the info's a bit vague - maybe she was raised the same as she was, except whole again and everything.

Yes, DutchS, we know you're good! :)

The speed of the Pearl i spart of the magic that comes with her resurrection. I wonder why Jack's soul is worth that much to DJ that he'd make this all possible?
