On a slightly different note... it occured to me in the cinema today (while watching DMC, of course... Although may have been funnier if I was watching another film and still thinking about POTC!!!) what do you think the reason is for Jack being so attached to the Pearl? After all, in Jack's own words, at the end of the day 'She's only a ship, mate'. I was thinking about when Bootstrap is saying how Davy Jones raised the Pearl from the depths for Jack, and something suddenly occured to me. Here goes-- It's to do with the Pearl's name-- that is, the Black Pearl. Why did Jack choose this name-- we now know this ship wasn't called that to start with, so why rename it? Did he just pick this name from thin air? So, perhaps there's a hidden meaning behind this name, something that Jack wants to pay tribute to, or remember. And I was thinking-- if the reason the Pearl got sunk to start with was to do with an argument over a cargo of slaves, maybe it involved a particular slave... A Black Pearl? As in, a woman, an African (or whatever nationality it might be) slave who was precious to Jack? Or have I read too much of The Da Vinci Code and am now reading into things too much? Hm... EDIT-- AAANNNDD... I see Dutch has already made this point. Bugger-- there was me thinking I was being clever. Ah well, I've just embellished it a bit...EDIT EDIT-- And on the line 'She's only a ship, mate', does this mean that Jack has finally taken in that naming a ship after someone won't help, won't replace her, and that he should just let go? Did any of that make sense???!!!

I think it made sense. Don't worry. All these theories are very interesting. I'm not sure what to think about everything. But I like the theories! ![]()
Well, here's the way I saw that line... so much has been fought for the Black Pearl. Much of the first movie was devoted to Jack trying to get her back from Barbossa. Evidently she was destroyed 13 years ago and he went so far as to make a deal with the devil himself (pretty much, anyway) just to get her back. And now Jack's got to leave her. While that line was meant to convince Gibbs that they all needed to get off the boat if they wanted to live, I think the person Jack was most trying to convince was himself. I mean, did you see the way he looked when he got the Pearl back at the end of COTBP? If that wasn't love, I don't know what is! He had to convince himself that there were more important things than his beloved Pearl. While watching Jack die at the end is sad, the part that always gets me the most is when they show the view from the longboat of the Pearl being taken down by the Kraken. I mean, Jack we know will come back (he's Captain Jack Sparrow! Of course he'll be back.), but the Pearl, which was the thing that Jack wanted most in this world, may be gone forever. Now that I've gone and depressed myself... I guess my main point is that Jack was convincing himself to let the Pearl go when he said, "She's only a ship, mate." That's my theory for the night. |

Here's my two cents. I looked up peral and one of the answers it gave me was this.
Jack obviously loves the pearl as to go to such lengths to raise her from the depths. The pearl is Jack's freedom. Jack regards the pearl as a beauty, in that she gives him what he wants [no get your head out of the gutter ] freedom.
Obviously the Comadore thing wasn't working for Jack. Jack is one who lives for freedom and adventure.
We know that this is a reference to Elizabeth but, it could also mean the pearl? It's his little or should I say big seeing as ships are big -treasure. |

Yep, PG, that's pretty much what I thought, before what I said above came to me... So now, I've got that line working in two different ways...
And I love the way he looks at the Pearl at the end of COTBP-- and i's the same for me, what really gets me at the end of DMC is when they all watch the Pearl go down. I like your last point, ABOM... hadn't thought of that! |

As for the Black Pearl's name, the official explanation I heard for the "Black" is that the ship is black because it was burned (before Beckett and his EIC friends blew holes in it and sank it). Somewhat lackluster, but there you go. |

Oh this is amazing! A wealth of iinformation about two of my three favorite things in these movies, (Captain Jack Sparrow, the beloved Black Pearl, and Davy Jones). Until now I had gone on the wikipedia knowledge of Jack and such, but I knew it was flawed. This is great! For anyone who's interested, Wikipedia states the following, (which I believe to be flawed). "Pirates of the Caribbean I takes place in the 1700s in Port Royal, Jamaica." This is flawed because Port Royal did not exist in the 1700s. Established around 1650, Port Royal had become a home for prostitutes and brothels by 1660 and through said decade. An earthquake leveled the British/privateer colony in 1692, and though attempts were made to rebuild it, the attempts were stopped after 1704 when a fire destroyed the town a second time. "Pirates of the Caribbean II takes place in the 1600s in Port Royal, Jamaica." More believable - unless you consider the fact that the first one supposedly took place in the 1700s... "Jack Sparrow is 31 years old in the first Pirates movie." Which means he would have had to take control of the Black Pearl, (or then the Wicked Wench), no younger than the age of 19. I suppose in merchancy that's doable.... "Jack Sparrow killed his father at the age of 15." Again possibly true - if the scenes in the third Pirates are flashbacks. If not - then obviously not true. It's so hard to imagine a young Captain Jack Sparrow! I wonder if he always was a little - off - and the heat from his exile brought it out. I imagine he was a lot of fun, though! To a comment made earlier - I agree that Jack was trying to convince himself on the idea of leaving the Pearl. I think the bond between captain and ship is unbreakable, and possibly the closest kind of love there can be. I'm with those at the end - I didn't start actually crying until I saw the Pearl being taken down. Until Barbossa showed up, I had the Pearl and Jack linked - so long as there was the Pearl, there was Jack, and vice versa. And sorry - I like 'Black Pearl' more than 'Wicked Wench.' O:-) |

I don't think Jack killed his father. Spoilers about P3!- In one scene that I've read about. Jack and Lizzy talk to him( also seen/reported in the comic con clip). Could be a flashback maybe not.* |
